TOM EDWARDS EYE ON THE FRANKENSTEIN SET

#frankensteinfriday : THIS LESSER SEEN PUBLICITY STILL from Hammer films, The Revenge of Frankenstein is one that has been rarely published, and yet for me it's one of the best stills from the whole Frankenstein / Hammer/Cushing series... stills photographer, Tom Edwards who worked for Hammer quite extensively from 1956 until 1966 and on most of Cushing features with the company at that time, is the eye behind this photograph! There's some fine skill and composition in this guillotine shot with Cushing. A shot like this, would have been passed over in the press office when selecting their press packs to sell the movies... but Cushing's expression and the subtle drama in this shot, certainly works for me.

Another Revenge of Frankenstein still from Tom Edwards. Again
his framing technique serves the subject very well.

WOULD WE WANT TO SEE TARKIN IN SOLO FILM??!

ON THE SLATE there are an array of standalone #STARWARS movies on the way -- beginning with Rogue One: A Star Wars Story in December 2016 -- and not long after that, we can expect the extended story of HAN SOLO, with the recent confirmation of Alden Ehrenreich to play the 'new' Han Solo. To quote several Star Wars forums and web features...' Han Solo didn't always fight on the most righteous side of the Galactic Civil War -- at least if this part of the Expanded Universe remains canon. During his younger years he enlisted in the Imperial forces and trained to become a pilot. With that in mind, this seems like a prime opportunity to bring back Grand Moff Tarkin (originally played by the late Peter Cushing in A New Hope) as a central member of The Empire's imposing military.

Tarkin has become a major element on the Star Wars Rebels, and considering the fact that the time-lines more or less seem to line up, it would make perfect sense for him to appear in Han Solo's standalone adventure possibly even accompanied by a wheezing Darth Vader!' (Cinemablend.com)... it seems as though something of Cushing will appear in Rogue One this December, but what do we think about the prospect of Tarkin's character with or without Cushing's appearance in the new Solo film???

HAPPY BIRTHDAY DIANA RIGG : DAME ACTRESS ICON AND GIF!

OK WE ARE HOLDING OFF ON #cushingcollectables until our NEXT post today, in order to bring you this...! ''Women of my age are still attractive. Men of my age are not' ... so said, this amazing icon of entertainment last year. And you know, Dame Enid Diana Elizabeth Rigg, DBE...does have point! Many actors from her era have either left us, or look like an unmade bed! We all know the Cushing Connection here, Mrs Peel in the Brit 1960's tv series, The Avengers, where PC played the very dashing Paul Beresford, a smooth operator, pushing all the buttons as romantic interest for Rigg's all action Mrs Peel and a finger on the button of death that commanded his deadly Cybernaut!

DIANA RIGG'S CAREER  also features the splendid 'Theatre of Blood' with Vincent Price. She also worked with Christopher Lee in the Avengers tv series.in 'Never, Never Say Die' in 1967. Currently starring in the international hit tv series, Game of Thrones, Rigg is in no hurry to retire, and I think like Mrs Pell, she'll be 'socking it to us' for a while yet Happy Birthday Diana Rigg, born today in 1938.

#TOOCOOLTUESDAY: ROY ASHTON RARE SIGNED PIC, FRIENDS SOLVE A CUSHING PUZZLE AND SPENDING TIME WITH PC IN WHITSTABLE

#‎TOOCOOLTUESDAY‬: PHOTOGRAPHS OF PETER CUSHING in his award winning role of Arthur Grimsdyke from the Amicus films, 'Tales From The Crypt' are quite desirable. I got this one signed in 1980, during the filming of our PCAS interview with the great Roy Ashton who was responsible for this 'ground breaking;... for the time... make up, . . Roy still found the fact the gauze material in PC's eye-sockets, was a swatch of nylon hacked out of a pair of sockings!!

#‎TOOCOOLTUESDAY‬: DURING THE LAST FEW YEARS of his life, living in sleepy Whitstable, Peter Cushing befriended a young couple called Judith and Nic Gadd. They wrote a book and published it through Peter Cushing's own small publishing company entitled, 'Spending Time With Frankenstein' and it's certainly worth looking up...though it is a toughie to find.. Here is Judith with PC taking a walk through town . . . I LIKE that hat!

#TOOCOOTUESDAY : HERE'S A COOL LITTLE PIC, in the file with no credits. In THIS WEEK'S #TOOCOOLTUESDAY, we asked if any of you out there might have an idea as where this pic was taken. I was guessing it could be a Spanish television programe..and then we got some very cool feedback on the thread where this  was posted on ourPeter Cushing Appreciation Society Facebook Fan Page
Rafael Martinez wrote to tell us, 'The program was in the spanish television, when Peter was in Spain filming "Horror Express". The program was named "Opened Studio" (Estudio Abierto) and hosted by José María Iñigo (on the left)It was at the time of "Horror Express", not "Monster Island" for sure. The TV program ended about 1975. "Monster Island" was filmed in 1981. I knew Peter briefly on original locations in Northern Spain, when he was filming "Monster Island" with Terence Stamp. Peter was a dear man. He often smoked on location, with a white glove to avoid nicotine stains.

'Peter was here only a few days, for a brief sequence in a beach (Terence Stamp was a few days filming too). The film had a very low budget. The rest of his brief participation was filmed in a studio in Madrid (The beach was Otur, Asturias, Spain)'

ALSO EMPTY HEAD wrote to us with further info on the programme and a Christopher Lee connection, 'Incidentally, the late Sir Christopher Lee was also a guest on the programme "Estudio Abierto", though I don't know whether it was this particular episode or not. (see ABOVE) Those of us here who know our Spanish TV shows will probably be aware of José María Íñigo as a regular participant on "Que Tiempo Tan Feliz" (hosted by the legendary María Teresa Campos). I believe he also does the commentary for the Spanish transmission of The Eurovision Song Contest.

#MONSTERMONDAY : CORRUPTION SIR JOHN A MONSTER OR VICTIM OF CIRCUMSTANCE?

#‎MonsterMonday‬: YESTERDAY OUR CANDIDATE for Monster Monday was Sir John Rowan from Corruption (1968) a plastic surgeon whose fiancée Lynn Nolan's (Sue Lloyd) face is badly disfigured in an accident, caused in part by a jealous rage of his. Throughout the film Sir John goes to extreme lengths to get the material needed to restore her face, (the glands taken from other women). Now the question is, is Sir John a true monster or just someone driven to do terrible things by combination of guilt and love… We had some great comments on the facebook yesterday. Your Opinion?

GUESS THE FILM AND THE ACTRESSES : ON SET SATURDAY

#ONTHESETSATURDAY: We have a couple of choice behind the scenes and on set photographs and rare colour transparencies for you this week. A little different this time around, I would like you to tell US which film these great snaps come from, and of course the only thing they really have in common, is they are all from Peter Cushing films. HAVE FUN!

TO FINISH OFF...This is one of my all-time personal favourite 'behind the scenes' photographs from a Peter Cushing film! It's wonderfully busy, a real slice of life from the set of Hammer film at lovely ol Bray studios... Peter Cushing compares notes and script with director Terence Fisher, while an assistant to wardrobe mistress Rosemary Burrows, quickly fixes a stitch or seam on the belt of Cushing's waist coat, while actor Thorley Walters stops and pauses to rethink that line of dialogue... actress Susan Denberg wanders by, playing with her bonnet!.... absolutely charming!

#ROGUEONE : SO IS THAT A YOUNGER TARKIN??

NEW #ROGUEONE TRAILER released yesterday! Here's the question asked by many Peter Cushing fans today, watch the new featurette and ask yourself...'IS THAT TARKIN??' Now the time-line seems clearer and it appears #ROGUEONE will be set somewhere in the time during the  construction of the Death Star, I guess the actor required to play Tarkin won't be as young as I first imagined! We'll have to wait and see!

#TBT REAL STRANGE AND SPOOKY GOINGS ON IN CUSHING 'CREEPING FLESH' FILM! CAN YOU SPOT IT?

YOU WOULD EXPECT the set of a Peter Cushing horror film to be a spooking and slightly unnerving place. You wouldn't be surprised to see the occasional skeleton, disembodied body parts hanging around or things moving around by themselves, but aided by a out of shot prop or special effects guy. BUT WHAT ABOUT MOVING UNASSISTED BY THE PROP GUY???

WELL, THAT CERTAINLY SEEMS TO BE THE CASE HERE! The film is THE CREEPING FLESH  a very enjoyable horror film, starring Peter Cushing, Christopher Lee, Lorna Heilbron, George Benson and even, Michael Ripper gets a quick look in. It's one of the few films that Tigon Films produced in the 1970's, along with 'Blood On Satan's Claw' and that other Tigon Cushing outing, The Blood Beast Terror in 1968. Low on budget, but occasionally, quite polished and original. No Dracula's or Frankenstein's here...but certainly at times, they give some of Hammer films early 70's releases, a good run for their money! Though for a limited time, a very good quality DVD was available of this film, believed to have been struck off a superior HD master print, after some copyright issues, the DVD release vanished from sales and can now only occasionally be found on ebay, for very silly money indeed.  It's a film that is still sadly awaiting a blu ray release with a deserving menu of extra features and the bits and bobs, that make horror film buffs froth!

I GUESS I AM ONE OF THE LUCKY ONES, that put my money down, before the asking price went up! Certain cretins think making the price go north, is a dead cert to get fans to part with their lolly. Not The Case. So, the film unfortunately for the meantime, is out of the grasp for many. But, the tom tom drums tell me a Blu Ray is a-comin-soon!

HOWEVER, BACK TO THE PLOT. . . .  Peter Cushing's, more than able co-star for much of this film is Christopher Lee, but actor GEORGE BENSON has a good deal to do in his screen time with Cushing and shares some major suspenseful scenes! Which brings us to the film clip above, featuring both Cushing and Benson. We spotted something MOST peculiar in this shot. Cushing's Dr Emmanuel Hildern is explaining some important plot details to Benson's 'Waterlow'...and then... well. See if YOU can spot it too? If you can why not visit us at our Peter Cushing Appreciation Society Facebook Fan Page, where we have just posted this clip too...and let us know what you have seen...or not! Have fun!
