KINO FLESH AND THE FIENDS BLU RAY WITH EXTRAS PLUS VINTAGE HAMMER POSTERS FOR SALE! BUT HOW MUCH ARE THEY WORTH?


#WATCHWITHCUSHING! We all know that vintage and original press and promotion materials for much of #PeterCushing's 1950's and 60's films are now worth a pretty penny. If they also hold an autograph the value is even higher! Here in this clip at the FACEBOOK PCASUK FAN PAGE! are TWO superb examples. Just for FUN . . BEFORE you watch this clip of these posters being sold, I would like you to comment on the post and tell me how much YOU think both the 1958 '#Dracula' UK #cinema quad poster, in pretty good condition and the almost mint 1965 Amicus 'Dr Terror's House of Horrors' UK cinema poster, could individually be worth? AN UPDATE ON THE KINO BLU RAY release of 'FLESH AND THE FIENDS' is that the things are still set for JULY 7th 2020 AND that this John Gilling directed, based on a true story 2K restoration will also be carrying some extras too!

Starring Peter Cushing, Donald Pleasence, June Laverick, Billie Whitelaw, George Rose, Renee Houston and Dermot Walsh – Shot by Monty Berman (Jack the Ripper, The Crawling Eye) – Music by Stanley Black (War-Gods of the Deep, Valentino) – Co-written by Leon Griffiths (The Grissom Gang, The Squeeze) – Co-written and Directed by John Gilling (The Reptile, The Plague of the Zombies).



THIS RELEASE IS COMING AS A TWO DISC package, because not only do you get the 2k RESTORATION BLU RAY but there's also a FULL ALTERNATIVE CUT which also carries the USA title of 'The Fiendish Ghouls' and 'Mania'. You would be forgiven for thinking, that maybe Amicus films producer, MAX ROSENBERG, may have had a dabble and offered for free with one of his OTT titles at their press office too? Not so. . . .



OVER THE YEARS, there have been quite a few different cuts made available on the home cinema market. Right now, there is a DVD available from Image Entertainment who list their running duration for the "uncut" original theatrical version at 94 minutes, but they also carry a slightly extended, wait for it . .  "Continental" version—produced only for European markets with more permissive, boob and bottom nodding censors— running at 95 minutes which includes extra shots, short sequences or alternative takes with more nudity. 'THE FLESH AND THE FIENDS' was released by Valiant in the USA using the titles 'MANIA' and 'PSYCHO KILLERS' . . .  (Guess which box office smashing Hitchcock film was released also in 1960)  . . . using the censored British theatrical cut, but it didn't stop there... FIVE years later in 1965 a re-release by Pacemaker Pictures under the title 'THE FIENDISH GHOULS' cut a whole 23 minutes from the film's runtime! Both the UK and the continental cut of the film are included in the KINO BLU RAY RELEASE!



ALSO INCLUDED in thus release is an 'Audio Commentary by Film Historian Tim Lucas'. Disc Two also includes the 1960  theatrical TRAILER for 'THE FLESH AND THE FIENDS' I am not sure how many 'units' of this film have been  produced for sale, but those smiling after awaiting a long while for this remastering and would like to guarantee a copy of this gem to your library shelf, now might be a good time to nail that order 😊- Marcus

ONE TOO MANY AND ONE MORE LOOK AT GLENDA!


TAKEN FROM CHRISTOPHER LEE'S autobiography, 'Lord of Misrule' this is Lee's thoughts on his time taken making the Dracula saga . . did he make too many? On posting this today at the FACEBOOK PCASUK FAN PAGE, we've asked our friends and followers, What do THEY think of this statement?


ON POSTING that banner and Christopher Lee quote, along with various interesting comments today, a few have also messaged me to ask where did that unusual 'HORROR OF DRACULA' poster come from? Well, it's a very rare day-bill for the 1970’s (1st Australian release) of the 1958 classic ‘Hammer’ production. I don't own it sadly! In Oz they had quite a playful way of producing their play-bill designs . . here is one below of a montage of images, pasted together for quickly hand-written up publicity hand outs .  


AND FOLLOWING ON the Christopher Lee Dracula post . . here is a neat rarely seen and addition to a series of photographs taken in a photo session with Christopher Lee and several models / actress who appeared in Hammer films 'Dracula AD 1972' by the UK 'newspaper' The Daily Mirror'. I love the sellotape tacked onto the flat in the background 😀 It is a very interesting and quite weird series of photographs, that also at one point had photo fans and collectors, convinced that actress Linda Hayden, was featured in some of the photos and poses . . even Hayden herself! You can learn more about that in a photo feature, I wrote sometime ago, RIGHT HERE!

#GIFS: SILENT BUT DEADLY WEDNESDAY: WHAT THE DICKENS TWINS? : A CLOAK AND ISABEL IS BIT!


#SILENTBUTDEADLYWEDNESDAY!: Amicus films, THE HOUSE THAT DRIPPED BLOOD   was a big hit, financially, and despite the OTT title or maybe because of, it's the one of three that seems to stay in the minds of the audience, long after, TALES FROM THE CRYPT  DR TERROR'S HOUSE OF HORRORS  being the other two. It was with 'HOUSE' that maybe Milton first decided that, perhaps a little BLACK COMEDY would be a good thing, to introduce into the mix of the company releases. 


THE JON PERTWEE / INGRID PITT story 'THE CLOAK' was based on material, as were all four short stories that made up the film, originally written and subsequently scripted by Robert Bloch. I'll leave it to you to decide if it tickles your funny bone or not, for me it was GEOFFREY BAYLDON'S shop keeper, that certainty tickled me most. The above #GIF features Pertwee, trying out The Cloak, look carefully, and just for a few frames, he really does favor the young #TOMBAKER who was to follow him as the time-traveler, #DRWHO. Though at the time, of Pertwee's appearance in this film, he had not long taken over from Patrick Troughton . . .Cushing of course, played the non-canon Dr Who in the only theatrically released feature films, featuring the Dalek's in 1965 and 1966




#SILENTBUTDEADLYWEDNESDAY!: THIS SHORT and silent gig, should give you a teaser as to what is in store, should you decide to catch our UPLOAD at the PETER CUSHING APPRECIATION SOCIETY YOUTUBE CHANNEL THIS weekend! Cushing pulls out everything he has in playing Dr. Alexander Manette in the 1980 film adaption of Charles Dickens, 'A TALE OF TWO CITIES'. Joined by a young Alice Krige, yes she of  BORG QUEEN fame,  as Lucie Manette, his daughter. 




IT GOES UP on the PCAS YOUTUBE CHANNEL on SUNDAY, traditionally our #GETTHECUSHION! themed day. They will be no screams of terror this week, but certainly, screams and sobbing!


#SILENTBUTDEADLYWEDNESDAY! YUP, ISOBEL IS BIT ALRIGHT. Which is a bit of a shame too. No sooner does actress ISOBEL BLACK arrive on screen, than she is gone! In Hammer films, 'TWINS OF EVIL' (1971), her second Hammer after playing Tania 'KISS OF THE VAMPIRE' (1963), she played the rather ineffectual Ingrid Hoffer, a village school mistress and sister to the film's hero actor, David Warbeck. She sadly had little screen time. It was no doubt a weak part, where she did little but support the narrative.

HER SUDDEN AND VERY DRAMATIC exit as a 'blood drained corpse' bundled in by Peter Cushing's Gustav Weil, during a school music lesson, is the one of the film's best scenes though. What little material Isobel had, she made the most of, but her limited time maybe connected to a conversation during the shooting, when she remarked to Director John Hough, about refusing to appear stark naked. She is known to have been told by Hough: "Well that cuts you out of my future films".
  

I WOULD HAVE LOVED to have seen Isobel play against Peter Cushing in a feature film. I think had Judy Geeson not landed the role of Peggy Heller in Hammer's FEAR IN THE NIGHT (1972), which she played superbly, Black had she been cast, would have put a completely different reflection that that role. Interestingly, Isobel did appear with Judy Geeson in director, Richard Fleischer's '10 RILLINGTON PLACE' (1971), the story of notorious mass murderer Reginald John Christie, which starred Richard Attenborough and John Hurt.

#SILENTBUTDEADLYWEDNESDAY! GIFS SHERLOCK COMEDY VAMPIRES AND TITLES


#SILENTBUTDEADLYWEDNESDAY!: PLAYING THE ROLE OF SHERLOCK HOLMES was something that Peter Cushing enjoyed very much indeed. Being a student of the stories and everything that went along with that, was indeed  a Cushing thing! Cushing had an eye and attention for detail, pouring over the structure and methods, in the story of 'The Hound of the Baskervilles' for Hammer films in 1959, he was very much in his element. 


THE FACT THAT he signed on for the Hammer Hound, then in 1968 16 episodes of the BBC television serial and finally choose to neatly wind down his career, with a 90 min tv movie The Masks of Death in 1984, playing an elderly Holmes, who was also bringing his long and distinguished career to an end, says much. Had failing heath not intervened, Cushing would have rubbed his hands together and prepared for another feature film, The Abbott's Cry,  in 1985. But sadly, it was not to be.





#SILENTBUTDEADLYWEDNESDAY!: WHEN DIRECTOR Peter Duffell read the script for 'THE CLOAK' story that was part of the four stories that made up Amicus films, 'The House That Dripped Blood' in 1972, he started to form a plan. The script outlined the climax and death of Jon Pertwee's vampire character, and that this particular tale was to be 'the comic relief' in the film. He hit on the idea, that maybe the comedy should be cranked up to max, and that the chase and staking would great if, it was shot and edited in a 'silent movie style'. He almost got his way. The producers first wasn't sure if this sudden changed of gear would lose the audience, and ruin the tension that had been built with the previous story. They drew the line at the use of black white photography and a flicker effect.




ORIGINALLY, Duffell wanted the whole story to be shot in monochrome, and the death scene to be sped up, with a 'keystone cop' frame flicker. Producers tuned Duffel's idea down, pleading that monochrome would be far too expensive for an entire 15 to 20 minutes, and that the flicker would jarring. But,  Duffell did get his under-cranked camera speed, and a slap-stick ending. NOTE: Subotsky liked the concept of a story set in a horror film on the Hollywood studio lot, and revisited the idea in one of his last anthology films, 'The Uncanny' starring Peter Cushing and Donald Pleasence in 1977.


#SILENTBUTDEADLYWEDNESDAY! THIS SHOT gets requested a lot! Director Freddie Francis must have known he was really onto something when he came up with idea, of POV shooting through the SKULL'S eye sockets in Amicus films, 'THE SKULL'...so much so he repeated the whole thing in Tigon's 'THE CREEPING FLESH' with Peter Cushing a few years later! Point Of View camera work was nothing new in 1965, but through a skull? Yup. 




FREDDIE CRANKED up the terror with whole sequences of POV's in Tyburn film, 'LEGEND OF THE WEREWOLF' with Peter Cushing. The added effect this time, was a RED tint to the vision, giving the impression we were 'seeing what the werewolf' could see through his bloodshot eyes! It was very effective and saved money in the budget on showing the werewolf too!


#SILENTBUTDEADLYWEDNESDAY! I DON'T get requests for title sequences from trailers that often, but this one is a good one. Peter Cushing and Christopher Lee credits, with supportive text from 'THE GORGON' (Hammer 1964) I LOVE the font styles in 1950 and 6o's trailers. They seem to scream from the screen at you. Back in the day, text added to film was done in the labs optically, and was a highly skilled job. There were standard text styles that were used in rolling credits to be seen at the end of beginning of most films. But often, for something that came from Hammer films, the studio would ask for something a little special, like the title font style in these gifs here. Illustrators would attempt to evoke the genre or subject matter of the film through the letter forms. Here sharp, angular typography is used evoke the disturbing subject matter, also maybe echoing the work of German Expressionist illustrators like Josef Fenneker. 





IN THE DAYS BEFORE SOUND FEATURES, titles were standard and used to communicate the dialogue and direction of the story, but by the mid-late 1930s, film titles started serving a narrative function and were designed to prepare the viewer for the mood and story of the film. Hammer, Amicus and Tigon used this very effectively. 



AT THE TIME  THE GORGON was in production, title artists like SAUL BASS had made the film title an art form, with films like PSYCHO. Bass titles were legendary and he created what are still some of the best title designs for directors like Alfred Hitchcock. Bass once said, “For the average audience, the credits tell them there’s only three minutes left to eat popcorn… I aim to set up the audience for what’s coming; make them expectant,” says Bass.
