#TOOCOOLTUESDAY: HERE IS A GREAT #VINTAGE STILL of #PeterCushing and #ChristopherLee... You can see quite clearly the difference in height between them. No wonder Lee was SO powerful as #Dracula. I also like the #coyness in Lee's face here...we often forget the difference in their ages and experience. Lee was the #BABY in the line up of many of their films together...that soon changed with experience and age though. Still, you can imagine the power of his performance as #DRACULA... I mean, would you pick a #fight with a guy with sharp #teeth and who soooo tall?

A SENSE OF FUN, A NAUGHTY SENSE OF HUMOR AND CUSHING AT CANNES

#THROWBACKTHURSDAY: CHRISTOPHER LEE once said that Peter Cushing had a laugh that could clear a restaurant in 30 seconds flat! And it must be said, if you ever get the chance to catch a clip of Peter laughing, it was a belter!  It also seemed to get even louder, when he was in the company of Christopher Lee! We interviewed JUDY GEESON back in the early 1980's, in her dressing room, at a theatre, where she was appearing in a play at the time. She was sharp, bright as a button, and chomped her way through a pawn salad, as she regaled us with stories for our Marantz audio recorder and microphone!

JUDY GEESON had only worked with Peter once in FEAR IN THE NIGHT (1972), and Christopher Lee in 1975 in a film called,  DIAGNOSIS MURDER. Thankfully, she had much to share on both. She also commented on his Cushing's laugh...and his pleasure on finding out that Judy kept a parakeet, and had a pet dog. She even brought the bird to the set of Fear In The Night, so Peter could sketch and paint it! It's interesting that most reports and reviews of Cushing's films that you read about, from this period of time, are usual tinged sadness, and concerned with Peter Cushing's grief and loss, of his wife, Helen. It's good to know, he did have sunny days, some light and shade.

#THROWBACKTHURSDAY: Marketing the Cushing Film in the 1970's..... from the Cannes film festival to US Home Video entertainment!

AND HERE IS another one from pit of...probably best forgotten releases..there can't be surely, any cheaper publicity poster, as lame and as penny pinching as this beauty from 'Black Jack: Death At The Casino' in which Peter had a guest star role.... this is the 'hold-the-front-page, Betty!' blinding monochrome poster for the trade-show at Cannes in 1981. There was later, a colour version, but it wasn't around very long...a bit like the film, I guess?

#MONSTERMONDAY : DR LAWRENCE AND A SEPIA TRIBUTE

#MONSTERMONDAY: Peter Cushing's performance as Dr Lawrence in Tyburn films, 'The Ghoul' is exceptional, on many levels. I can't help wondering whenever I watch him in this role, how he manages to be involved in such bizarre and ruthless acts, and yet... I feel such pity for the character. Watching the story unfold, as Lawrence reveals his past, all skirts very closely to 'Art imitating Life', as both the Doctor and Peter Cushing emotionally crumple before our eyes. It could be called, a masterclass in using 'emotive memories' ...if it wasn't for the fact that, for Cushing like Lawrence, it wasn't about recalling the past...it was living with the loss and pain today....

ABOVE A FIRST for our YOUTUBE CHANNEL! As part of this week's #MONSTERMONDAY we present a film, made in the tradition of 'The Old Dark House', 'Psycho' and many many other 'thing in the attic' movies. 'The Ghoul' stands as one of three films that Peter Cushing made with Tyburn films. 'Legend of the Werewolf' and 'The Masks of Death' being the other two. All three films have a quality and pace that very much bucked the trend of the time, and producer Kevin Francis, should be acknowledged for having the back-bone, to present these films, in a style, standard and production value, that would have been considered, out of step by many.

It is that style, that gives comfort and a quality, that was vanishing quicker than a vamp down a rat hole, at the first glimmer of sun-rise! Soon, all would be lost and stab, slash, scream and dismember would become the replacement for tension, suspense and a quality control hold on the body count. Having said that, many could and do site The Ghoul, as one of the very early slasher movies. Maybe so, but with the presence of Peter Cushing, the ageless beauty of Carlson and Bastedo and the bumpkin weirdness of the late, John Hurt.... things never slip so far as to become blood-lusty and just bad taste. The Ghoul is Kevin Francis homage to all those classics, where, just the THOUGHT of what could be in that room, out-strips the reveal of a million masked, chopper swinging, chain-saw buzzing, yawn fests, parts one, two, nine and TEN! It's a great shame that Tyburn had to leave us so soon, we were on the edge of our seats and just getting comfy!

JOHN HURT DIES AGED 77

VERY SAD NEWS to report the wonderful and talented actor John Hurt has passed away at aged 77

HIS CAREER has spanned six decades. He initially came to prominence for his supporting role as Richard Rich in the film A Man for All Seasons (1966). After this, he played leading roles as Quentin Crisp in the film The Naked Civil Servant (1975), John Merrick in David Lynch's biopic The Elephant Man (1980), Winston Smith in the dystopian drama Nineteen Eighty-Four (1984), Mr. Braddock in the Stephen Frears drama The Hit (1984), and Stephen Ward in the drama depicting the Profumo affair, Scandal (1989). He is also known for his television roles such as Caligula in I, Claudius (1976), and the War Doctor in Doctor Who.

ABOVE IS just a small sample of the wonderful chemistry between Hurt and Cushing in the Tyburn film, 'The Ghoul'... after watching this film for the first time in the cinema, the lasting impression was not left by 'the thing in the attic' or any of the gruesome deeds that unfolded during the ninety minutes... for me it was John Hurt's portrayal of the twisted, manipulative and unfortunate, Private John Rawlings, that made the impression.

PETER CUSHING'S DOCTOR Lawrence and Hurt's creepy grounds-man, where really unsettling together, you knew Veronica Carlson's Daphne, was doomed! What a huge loss to us all..but what a legacy too! John Hurt 1940 -2017 . . . .

#TOOCOOLTUESDAY: LUSH LASER : DODGY DISCS : GRAB THE CUSHION

#TOOCOOLTUESDAY: Pretty much a defunct format now, this laser disc of Cushing and Lee's Dracula epic, Dracula AD 1972 comes in some not too tatty packaging. The word is #lush ! It might not have extras, but the copy-em-wrap-em-and-shift-em presentation of some of the higher end 'special edition' blu ray and DVD disc releases of today, could learn a thing or two from this release.... #grabthecushinitscushing

#TOOCOOLTUESDAY: Quite a desirable item for some of us, as it's the full 83 mins 39 seconds long! Many dodgy (see Brit speak for: 'Unreliable, scammers, fakers, crooks, con-artist and robbing ********) traders have been selling DVD recordings of VHS 2nd generation copies of the BBC 1980 transmission of The Ghoul for quite a few years now, sticking anything to hand that's related to the film, onto the cover, to pass mustard. (Brit speak for to appear legitimate, kosher..sound as a pound..!! ..ok I'll stop now!) I saw one box a while ago, sporting a cover with just a pic of John Hurt, from his role in the film, '1984', funnily enough as Winston Smith, the role Cushing played in the amazing BBC production of '1984' broadcast in 1954. Weird huh?

STARTING THIS SUNDAY, we are giving our #SHERLOCKSUNDAYS a rest for a little while, but there will still be occasional Cushing Holmes posts! Instead we are trying something new... #grabthecushionitscushing ! Drop by this SUNDAY and see what you think??

A variation on this photograph was used in the UK cinema lobby set too!
