WATCH PARTY WITH 'THE GHOUL' WITH GALLERY AND MUCH MORE!

HAVING A GREAT TIME over at the FACEBOOK PCASUK FAN PAGE! right now! Where many of our #FRIENDS and #PCASUK #FOLLOWERS are seeing this Peter Cushing classic movie, for the first time! Prepare to be wrapped in the haunting fog of the moor, a house with terrible secret and a film with its foundations, strongly planted in another time. When producer Kevin Francis made this film, he wanted the script and the language on the screen to be of a past cinematic era. He succeeded... have fun with this one and feel free to leave your comments on this film in the thread! Take care and Stay Safe! - Marcus

ABOVE: A RE-RELEASE of the UNCENSORED 'TASTE of FEAR' VHS version of 'THE GHOUL'

TYBURN FILMS THE GHOUL (1975) was originally certified by the UK BBFC at a duration of 93 minutes following cuts to (a) remove the third close-up of the knife embedded in Geoffrey's face (b) remove a knee to the groin delivered by Veronica Carlson to John Hurt. However, the subsequent theatrical version was only 87 minutes long following some last minute snipping by the distributors. The full 93 minutes version, with BBFC cuts restored, was subsequently released on UK video on the 'Taste of Fear' label. The differences are as follows:

THE OPENING party sequence is extended by about 2 minutes 30 seconds via several additional dialogue extensions that largely serve to explain Carlson's character. In particular the conversation between her and Ian McCulloch when she is sitting in the car is nearly a minute longer and the subsequent three way conversation by another car involving Stewart Bevan is extended by about 40 seconds.

ABOUT 35 MINUTES into the film, directly after Peter Cushing asks Carlson whether there is anything she would like before dinner, the extended version has a new sequence lasting about 2 minutes and  30 seconds in which Carlson is escorted upstairs to her bedroom and takes a bath, in this sequence Carlson's left breast is briefly visible. This sequence is missing entirely from the theatrical print  and believed removed by the distributor at the time, through requests by BBFC.

AFTER THE BACH TOCATTA AND FUGUE strikes up on the soundtrack the extended version has an extra 1 minute showing Carlson emerge from the bedroom, clothed again, and go down the stairs where she then peeks in on Cushing in his chapel. In the theatrical version, it's a bit odd that Cushing is surprised by her given that in the previous scene they'd been together in his drawing room.

DID VERONICA CARLSON WORK WITH COMEDIAN DOM DELUISE? AND LEE AND CARLSON STEP OUT FOR 'RISEN 'FROM THE GRAVE'

A FEW DAYS AGO, pcasuk follower Stuart Cooper sent me a question, the subject of which, I thought no one would remember... 'Marcus, is it true that Hammer actress, Veronica Carlson once worked with US comedian and film star, Dom Deluise? I have looked into it and can't find any reference to it, so I guess it must be not true?' . . .

WELL YOU WOULD THINK the degrees of separation would make that the case, but no! Back in 1971, Veronica DID indeed work with Deluise, not on the big screen but on TV. The show was the UK 'Des O'Connor Show' she appeared in a 'slave-and-cave-girls' jungle hunters sketch, maybe because of her Hammer film success and their 'Slave Girls' 1967 film and 'One Million Years BC' success. Deluise did appear on the show too. The US actor comedian was also just about known to some of the O'Connor audience for his work and appearances in US sit coms, which were being screened in the UK, Shows and comedies like 'The Munsters' anyd his appearance in Mel Brook's 'The Twelve Chairs'. His other work with Burt Reynold's like 'The Cannonball Run' films and several other Brooks films, were yet to come!

FOR THOSE, over the pond or elsewhere, not familiar with Des O'Connor, he was a successful and popular singer / comedian at this time. Comedian's Morecambe and Wise had quite few long running and funny gags, Ernie's wig and hairy legs, Peter Cushing not being paid and . . . Des O'Connor, "Des - short for Desperate" ... "Sing on our show? He can't even sing on his own show!" "Has Des O'Connor got a sore throat?'... these gags ran for years and Des loved them.

VERONICA CARLSON worked with Peter Cushing in 'Frankenstein Must Be Destroyed' in 1969 and 'The Ghoul' in 1975. They remained close friends long after Peter retired. Thanks for the question Stuart. It brought back some very happy memories...

ABOVE THIS WEEKS TUESDAY TOUGHY! Good luck with this one and feel free to pop along to the FACEBOOK PCASUK FAN PAGE and post YOUR answer in the THREAD! MEANWHILE, below here is LAST WEEKS ANSWER!

ANSWER: DAVID KRESKIN an American Mentalist who was very popular on television in both the US and UK during the 1970's. In 1973 he broadcast a daytime TV series on ITV in the UK. Kreskin always claimed to be an 'entertainer', never a psychic, he operated using the power of suggestion, not paranormal or supernatural. In JULY 1973 Peter Cushing appeared as a guest on the daytime UK show and took part in a ten minute feature, where he was invited to write a NAME of his choice, on a piece of paper. Kreskin did not see the name, as it written and folded up. This paper was then set alight with a match, placed onto a china plate and the ashes from the paper were then rubbed lightly, onto the bare arm of Cushing, where the name HELEN then magically appeared! Helen was Cushing's late wife, who had died just two years previously. Kreskin at the beginning of the trick, did mention he had no prior knowledge of the name that Peter Cushing had chosen to write on the note paper. As with all magic tricks . . . the trick is in the preparation!

ABOVE: TELEVISION LISTING MAGAZINE TV TIMES with the listing of Cushing's appearance on the show. BELOW: Not AUSTIN POWERS but KRESKIN, during his tv show . . .

AT THE TIME when Cushing was still still in deep moaning for his late wife, I personally think, this was such an odd event and choice from Cushing. He never truly recovered for the twenty years odd years, he outlived Helen. Granted, he did a few years later also include a photograph of Helen in the Tyburn film, THE GHOUL'. But this, just seems weird and more than a little mawkish? Maybe it's just me, but I remember seeing this show as a teenager when it was broadcast, and even then, thought it odd. I would really appreciate your thoughts on this. It's a tv appearance which many would not now remember and is hardly ever mentioned. I am sure there will be several comments on this at the FACEBOOK PCASUK FAN PAGE TODAY. PLEASE feel free to join in with your comments and thoughts too!
