#GETTHECUSHION! THE MAKING AND BROADCAST OF 1984

#GETTHECUSHION: Where it all began for Peter Cushing and his career in fantasy and fear. Although many are not aware by this point in 1954, Cushing had already many years as an actor in the theatre both in the UK, and the USA and a period in film in Hollywood. . . . soon after the two live broadcasts of this drama, Cushing would come to the attention of Hammer films . . . .

THE PROFESSOR ISSUE FOUR : SIRENA : PRAISE FOR ISSUE FOUR!

ANYONE WHO IS a regular here at the PCAS website will know we are following a very interesting comic series published in Italy by Erredi Graphic Editor, “The Professor”. It tells the adventures of a Professor of literature and philosophy at the University College London, Mr Benjamin Love. He has been educated by Rabbi Moshe from Bevis Marks Synagogue to the mysteries of qabbaláh, alchemy and esoterism. The setting of this short series is horror Gothic and develops in the Late Victorian Age. The character of the Professor takes inspiration from Hammer’s films and he looks like the British actor Peter Cushing.

IN THIS FOURTH ISSUE, “Sirena”, Benjamin is invited by the Count Raimondo Del Balzo, descendant of the Prince Raimondo Di Sangro, to the fascinating city of Naples. The invitation which might be a simple rest occasion, soon turns to be a sort of incubus. Furio, the faithful mastiff dog who is the Professor’s life companion, has started to behave strangely recently. The stay at the Count’s mansion is not the best one: at night recurrent nightmares alarm Benjamin… This story is produced by the creative team led by Andrea Corbetta: drawings by the young artist Germano Giorgiani, script by Carlo A. Martigli, Giulia Carla De Carlo and Roberto Leoni who is also the new editor of the series.

THE PROFESSOR ISSUE FOUR!
The Professor 4: Sirena, testi di Carlo Martigli, Giulia Carla De Carlo, Roberto Leoni, disegni di Germano Giorgiani

S. Riccò: Hi, thank you for the latest addition. Tonight, I can finally enjoy myself with the  mermaid!

G. Giorgiani: A picture is obligatory with the professor!! Every two months in kiosk!! Thank you!

D. NIGRO : 'Well, after a thorough and finally lucid second reading, I can finally say my peace on this "mermaid". Let's start with the positive aspects: the drawings in some ways are authentic little masterpieces, see the appearance of mounted policeman outside the palace of sangro, or the image of melusine the last dream of Benjamin, or fingers at horns of count into Orbits the skull of the church of the souls of purgatory and so many others, all very inspiring and memorable...'

THE SEA, THE MERMAID AND THE PROFESSOR!

E. MANGRONI: 'The fourth issue was a great, and is currently my favorite, mostly for the theme... It fascinates me anything that hangs around undead, though maybe I wish some more detail on bokor Haitian... but I digress here 😉). The story reminds me of the style of some of the legends of American comics and made the story very fast and pleasant to read (to understand what I mean go read hush of Jim Lee and Loeb Joeph saga or the dark knight of Frank Miller). Also the new press has greatly improved the quality of the graphics and the paper gives you a pleasant sensation under my fingertips'.

T. T. V. Ongaro
'I must confess....  for me, this fourth number is the best out! Amazing! The other issues have been great too. Nothing to remove, do not change! This series of "the professor" is also a major in the field of Italian comics 😉 Congratulations to the authors!! '

Spaccio Fumetti:
'I realized, is it just me or have you guys noticed too that the professor, improves number after number? Going beyond the technical side, "Mermaid" presented a story that make s the most of the 'games of lights and shadows of the setting' (Naples) and drops into the story four mysteries, seemingly unrelated, that take our breath till last pages! Pages where everything is elegant! Beyond these aspects, Professor Love in "Mermaid" carries an aura maliciousness, it pervades his every action, enough to give us the most creepy issue of The Professor published so far!

#GETTHECUSHIONITSCUSHING! THE CHASE FROM CORRUPTION 1968

#GETTHECUSHIONITSCUSHING: THIS WEEK our clip is from one of Peter Cushing's most controversial films, the 1968, Corruption. In this clip we see Terry (Wendy Varnals) fleeing from Sir John Rowan (Peter Cushing) and his wife Lynn (Sue Lloyd) after seeing Sir John with a served head!! A unique film in Cushing's filmography, it has often divided fans. But as usual Cushing gives a fantastic performance as the troubled doctor who takes to murder to help his wife, and features some very effective POV shots during the murder sequences.... shot through a fish-eye lens, lending it a delirious quality.

CORRUPTION is another film in the Cushing filmography that divides as many as it brings together! ARE YOU A FAN?

#HAMMERFILMSSATURDAY : THE MUMMY FRONT OF HOUSE

#HAMMERSATURDAY THIS is one of my all time favorite Peter Cushing films. It has it all. Drama, horror, a love story and action! And this is also one of my fav front of house stills. Beautiful colour and action that leaps off the pic! DO YOU have a fav Cushing pic, photo still? Or is there one you have never seen here, that you would like me to post or 'dig up' for you? Let me know!

THE IMAGE that first appeared on some propose artwork for a campaign poster for THE MUMMY.... Cushing saw the light shining through the body of Kharis and asked, 'Is that in our script?' When he was told no, he invented the bit of biz where he shoves a harpoon through the chest of the Mummy Kharis... 'If it's on the poster, our public will expect to see it!' said Cushing

CRAZY AS A FOX AND PUSHED TO THE 'MAX' : ASYLUM (1972)

#GRABTHECUSHIONITSCUSHING... Here is the second of our SUNDAY posts under our new theme looking at some of the most frightening scenes from Peter Cushing films.... This week it's a clip from Amicus's Asylum (1972) SPOILERS...… In which Dr. Martin (Robert Powell) learns the truth about 'Max' (Geoffrey Bayldon)…. Always found that laugh particularly chilling…. How DOES THIS scene rate in your FAV CUSHING terror scenes???

THE CLIP ABOVE has stirred up some child-hood memories and revisited nightmares over at our PCASUK FACEBOOK FAN PAGE! Here are a small selections of comments from visitors:

W.SLEET:'The climax of 'Blind Alleys' from TALES FROM THE CRYPT was one of my most vivid childhood scares. Many of the Amicus films scared me more so than any of the Hammer films ever did - the combination of the contemporary setting (as opposed to costumed dramatics), plumby acTORs and gleeful gallows humour can be very unsettling - but, even now, this chilly little tale still makes me shudder!'

J.THORLEY: 'This was especially shocking when I was little, I expected a traditional happy ending. See also the hammer house of horror episode The Silent Scream! Really disturbing'.

J.MORROW: 'That last scene with that creepy laugh chilled me to the bone. Geoffrey Bayldon gave an unforgettable performance'

P.DUFFUS: 'A classic..great music too...Mussorgsky..the PC story my favourite on this one with the suit..'

D.FULCE: 'Spent a day with Geoffrey a few years back and told him I thought his laugh was on par with Dwight Frys in ' Dracula ' as most chilling ever !!'

B.MAIDMENT: ' I love this film and can watch it again and again. I cant decide
which story I like the best . Herbert Lom with his scary dolls or could it be Brit Eckland as Lucy. Peter Cushing with the suit but I know Geoffrey Bayldon out shines them all in this film Great acting
.

C.CARLEY: Love Geoffrey Bayldon, he was magic as Catweazle and I loved that small role he had in Dracula
