#CHRISTOPHERLEESATURDAY! THE GORGON GOES BLU DOWN UNDER!

#CHRISTOPHERLEESATURDAY! #NEWS: #HAMMERFILMS 1964 Classic THE GORGON had a BLU RAY release in the US back last year and now AUSTRALIA gets its dip too! It's the same master that was used for the US Mill Creek Entertainment release last year. What Australian label Via Vision Entertainment is giving us, is pretty much the same, it's cheap and cheerful packaging, there are no supplemental features on the disc. Audio is English, without optional English SDH subtitles for the main feature. BUT it is Region-Free.

It appears that Sony Pictures has only one master of The Gorgon that is available for licensing, right now. The master is a not restored or remastered and judging by our YOU REVIEW from Frank Turturici we posted here about the Mill Creek release, there's some we posted here about the Mill Creek release, there's some room for improvement, but the film looks good in high-definition. So, if you want to fill that gap on your shelf, holding your Cushing / Lee / Hammer Horror collection now. . . . This REGION FREE Australian release could be the very thing for you!

#CHRISTOPHERLEESATURDAY! DUBBING THE UNICORN

#CHRISTOPHERLEESATURDAY! *The English sections of the show begin at 1:15* In 1983 Christopher Lee appeared in a German television programme, where he talked about his career and life, but also his recent work, in the dubbing studio, recording in German his character, King Haggard in the animated film, 'The Last Unicorn' 1983. Here, we see, Christopher Lee dubbing his character King Haggard, in German! Not unlike his approach to preparation for the role of Saruman in 'The Lord of the Rings' trilogy, Christopher Lee showed up for the recording sessions armed with his own copy of the book, with several places marked to indicate things that must not, in his opinion, be omitted. Enjoy!

#FRANKENSTEINFRIDAY: THE ACID BATH AND THE HEAD

#FRANKENSTEINFRIDAY: #GIF  Paul Krempe (Robert Urquhart) looks on as Baron Frankenstein (Peter Cushing) drops the crow pecked disguarded head from the body he is resurrecting into the vat of acid. In the thread below, I have posted a rare colour photograph, taken by John Jay the films still photographer, for publicity.

It's not known IF director Terence Fisher actually shot the footage that we see represented in the photograph, ...additional footage where the camera sees the face of the head AND the acid melting the head in the acid bath...... It's too easy to say, 'Nah, never happened!'. But the #incredible footage recently added to #HAMMERFILMS classic 1958 #HORROROFDRACULA started as a rumor too...AND a colour photograph ...! 😉 What do you think?

#FRANKENSTEINFRIDAY! The skillful performance of #ChristopherLee as Frankenstein 'Monster -Creation' hasn't weakened over the years. It must have been a pretty daunting idea to try and follow in the footsteps of all the other amazing actors who had played the 'monster' at #Universal, #Karloff, #Chaney, #Lugosi, Strange . . . the make up may have not looked as impressive, but any short fall was well and truly made up with a performance that nailed a new thinking about the Baron's 'monster' . . .Lee would do the same again in less than a year, with his portrayal of Dracula.

The Curse of Frankenstein was a tremendous financial success and reportedly grossed more than 70 times its production cost during its original theatrical run. Cushing was already a household name in the UK, but his intelligent and driven Baron, would make him an international film star.

#THROWBACKTHURSDAY: WATCH THE LEGEND OF THE SEVEN GOLDEN VAMPIRES !

#THROWBACKTHURSDAY: There can't be many Peter Cushing or Hammer films fans...or haters of John Forbes Robertson's Dracula, that HAVEN'T seen, The Legend of the Seven Golden Vampires yet?. If you haven't, then this is your lucky day! Depending on how you like your vampires, or your Kung Fu, you maybe in for treat!.... Hammer films sadly, were sometimes a little like that 'almost trendy friend, who lived out-in-the-country'', who was just a little bit out of sync with the times. They did, 'Swinging London', when it's swing had ...well swung, dangled a bit and then died off, with their setting of Dracula AD 72. Jumped on the whole devil-possession thing, after The Exorcist impact had shocked, knocked out it's audience and left the door hanging off its hinges. And here sadly, when the Bruce Lee 'chop-sock and dragon craze' had blazed it's way across the world, and was already on the parody hit list.

BUT THERE IS A LOT to like about LEGEND. Sure, the special effects are a tiny bit on the Ed Wood side, but everyone shows up, kicks the living daylights out of one another and Cushing, looks great! Result! John Forbes Robertson is no Christopher Lee, but then who could be? He doesn't do any damage and his make up is very much in line with the tradition of how Asian cinema presents their idea of myth, lore and vampire legend.... So, don't knock it, punch, chop or bite it too hard! Had Legend of the Seven Golden Vampires, been released a good two years earlier, it would have been a smash . .. cash crash, Kung Fu cash cow! Hammer and co production buddies Shaw Brothers, must have been hopping mad that it wasn't!..A bit like the army of zombie vamps in the film I guess. I DO love em!

#THROWBACKTHURSDAY: EDITED WITH A BREAD-KNIFE: BANG! THE DEVILS MEN!

#THROWBACKTHURSDAY: It's wobbly. It's edited with a bread knife. It's got timing that would stop an atomic clock. The supporting acting is dire. The continuity, has none. BUT it does have Donald Pleasence and Peter Cushing. The Devil's Men / Land of the Minotaur / The Devil's People, call it what you will. It's still a terrible mess.. though it does have an EXPLODING Peter Cushing...quite literally. It's the only decent two minutes of the film sadly.... but worth a throwback just for that!

#SILENTBUTDEADLY!: SEEING IS BELIEVING! #GIFS

#SILENTBUTDEADLY! : Without giving anything away about this film, you can clearly SEE something very important is going on here HA! The Amicus films #DRTERRORSHOUSEOFHORRORS was a bench mark time for Amicus, that after 'City of the Dead' informed Subostsky and Rosenberg, in which direction they should explore. If you have been watching our uploads of the Donald Fearney excellent mammoth documentary 'The Amicus Vault of Horrors' you see, every time Amicus went off in a different direction, a drama, a different theme..the film bombed at the box office. So, we can be thankful that Cushing's Dr Shreck and Co, were a big hit. Unlike these poor guys, the Amicus future after this scene, wasn't very bleak one!

#SILENTBUTDEADLYWEDNESDAY! How was character actor Michael Ripper to know that, when he first read the 'HIDDEN FROM SIGHT, POACHER SEES 7ft TALL FIGURE WRAPPED IN BANDAGES, FROM BEHIND THE BUSHES' simple description in his script, that he would be forever associated with this short scene?. I have sat with friends.. . .we don't get out much.. and examined this shot. To try and discover, what is it that makes it so superbly funny. Ripper was a master of these roles. It was probably the thinnest of descriptions on the page, but from that, scriptwriter Anthony Hinds knew the role would be safe in Ripper's hands and Christopher Lee would supply the fright factor!

#SILENTBUTDEADLYWEDNESDAY! : THE 'I THNK I AM SEEING THINGS OR going Out Of My Mind' and the 'Wife / Husband Driving Their Partner Around The Bend With Set Up's Orchestrated By Their Lover' is as old as the hills. BUT, it's a popular scenario in Horror and thrillers. Despite having watched probably hundreds of these fantasy films over the years, I still have that ability  that many jaded fans lost a thousand films ago. When I sit to watch a film, unless it's a really poorly scripted one, I just let the story take me along. I am not in the biz of playing amateur sleuth, or critic, picking the plot apart after the credits role. I enjoy these movies, that's why I watch them. I still have a certain naivety, when it comes to being entertained. I come to be fooled, mislead, I am the script writers dream audience. I am not busy sat there trying to work it out. Nope. I paid my five dollars / pounds, I want my monies worth... entertain me.

Which is why, in this tale from 'The House That Dripped Blood' : 'Method For Murder', I never saw the REVEAL in this story coming! Ha! I was with Denholm Elliott's  character, Charles Hillyer all of the way. Isn't that the way it's supposed to be? If not, why are you watching?? As I said, from the off, I recognized the set up, but I wasn't expecting the wrap! Neither did I recognize that actor playing Dominick, the voice of UK's Channel Four four years, the late Tom Adams. Yup, I get good value out of most the films I see. Hey, I was the last person during our family viewing of all those terrible murders, to realize it was, Norman!

#SILENTBUTDEADLYWEDNESDAY! And finally, Peter Cushing's Colonel William Raymond SEES Alex Hyde- White's Jim Ferguson, in 'Biggles: Adventures In Time' from 1986. See? It doesn't get any better than that . . . .
