SHERLOCK HOLMES TAKES ON THE MASKS OF DEATH! #WATCHWITHCUSHING #WATCHPARTY!

DON'T THINK FOR A MINUTE THAT YOU CAN'T take another post of a Cushing Sherlock Holmes adventure? Snap out of it.๐Ÿ˜‰๐Ÿ˜€ This one... is different ๐Ÿ˜‰ #SirIanMckellen was 75, when he made that amazing Mr Holmes feature back in 2015. #PeterCushing was 71 when he appeared in what would almost be his 'swan song' for the big screen, and he pours just about everything he has in it ๐Ÿ˜Š'Sherlock Holmes and the Masks of Death' (1984) is a pretty clever film, with a very cool cast to help make it work.

THE THREE FACES OF Peter Cushing's Sherlock Holmes

'The Hound of the Baskervilles' (Hammer films 1959)

Peter Cushing as Sherlock Holmes in the BBC Television series of 1968

Cushing's Holmes in semi retirement in 'Sherlock Holmes and the
Masks of Death (1984)

THERE ARE MANY very nice touches in this film and despite Peter's obvious age and his belief he was too old to play it, it works, helped by Cushing's good friend, John Mills who fills the role of Dr Watson confidently and with a few well timed 'matured-creaks and groans'. Roy Ward Baker directs also Ray Milland, Anne Baxter and #AntonDiffring are all lovely to watch and help put the cherry on what could have been quite a stale and mouldy cake!

I VERY MUCH LIKE the story in this film. At times it's bleak, quite dark and uses one of the 'world's darkest of times' to under pin the evil and threats' in this #Sherlock and #Watson drama, written by Hammer's Anthony Hinds and N.J Crisp. It is a shame Cushing thought himself not fit enough or capable to nail another Holmes film, which was planned for production after this one. But, he did wait while Tyburn were trying to source funding.

CUSHING MADE '#Biggles' (1986) while waiting, which would be his last cinema role. I think he more than managed to do his last Sherlock justice and finally bow out from one of his most accomplished and always most confidently performed roles in his long and varied career. I hope you enjoy this too ๐Ÿ˜ŠMarcus

#THROWBACKTHURSDAY! PETER GOES POP!

IT'S A QUICKY RELEASE tie-in song, for the movie, 'Biggles', Cushing's last theatrically released movie in 1986. It's also now very dated. It's corny. It's annoying synth rock from the 80's. But Cushing strolling through shots, is something certainly different, and the pay-off ending is worth the wait. Whatever, it isn't as bad as the ill-advised DIY RAP video for Cushing's 'No White Peaks'. A hastily cobbled together 2 and half mins of our chap, dressed in gold-chain, bling and baseball hat akimbo, shot in someones back yard, was a mistake and did no one any favors . .

THE THEME FROM BIGGLES: AN ADVENTURE IN TIME (1986) adventure film directed by John Hough and later released in 1988 in the United States as 'Biggles: Adventures in Time'. The plot involves a time traveler from the 1980s who is inserted into World War I to help the character Biggles from the series of novels by W. E. Johns and where Biggles also travels to the 1980s to save his new friend. The film stars Neil Dickson, Alex Hyde-White, and Peter Cushing in his final feature film role. Other songs that appear in the film include: Jon Anderson – "Chocks Away", Deep Purple "Knocking at Your Back Door". Mรถtley Crรผe – "Knock 'Em Dead, Kid" and The Immortals – "No Turning Back" (featuring John Deacon in his only non-Queen recording).

AS WELL AS Music video promotion for the film the UK comic THE EAGLE ran a series of promo ads in it's pages. Sponsored by the good ol ABC cinema chain !

#SILENTBUTDEADLY!: SEEING IS BELIEVING! #GIFS

#SILENTBUTDEADLY! : Without giving anything away about this film, you can clearly SEE something very important is going on here HA! The Amicus films #DRTERRORSHOUSEOFHORRORS was a bench mark time for Amicus, that after 'City of the Dead' informed Subostsky and Rosenberg, in which direction they should explore. If you have been watching our uploads of the Donald Fearney excellent mammoth documentary 'The Amicus Vault of Horrors' you see, every time Amicus went off in a different direction, a drama, a different theme..the film bombed at the box office. So, we can be thankful that Cushing's Dr Shreck and Co, were a big hit. Unlike these poor guys, the Amicus future after this scene, wasn't very bleak one!

#SILENTBUTDEADLYWEDNESDAY! How was character actor Michael Ripper to know that, when he first read the 'HIDDEN FROM SIGHT, POACHER SEES 7ft TALL FIGURE WRAPPED IN BANDAGES, FROM BEHIND THE BUSHES' simple description in his script, that he would be forever associated with this short scene?. I have sat with friends.. . .we don't get out much.. and examined this shot. To try and discover, what is it that makes it so superbly funny. Ripper was a master of these roles. It was probably the thinnest of descriptions on the page, but from that, scriptwriter Anthony Hinds knew the role would be safe in Ripper's hands and Christopher Lee would supply the fright factor!

#SILENTBUTDEADLYWEDNESDAY! : THE 'I THNK I AM SEEING THINGS OR going Out Of My Mind' and the 'Wife / Husband Driving Their Partner Around The Bend With Set Up's Orchestrated By Their Lover' is as old as the hills. BUT, it's a popular scenario in Horror and thrillers. Despite having watched probably hundreds of these fantasy films over the years, I still have that ability  that many jaded fans lost a thousand films ago. When I sit to watch a film, unless it's a really poorly scripted one, I just let the story take me along. I am not in the biz of playing amateur sleuth, or critic, picking the plot apart after the credits role. I enjoy these movies, that's why I watch them. I still have a certain naivety, when it comes to being entertained. I come to be fooled, mislead, I am the script writers dream audience. I am not busy sat there trying to work it out. Nope. I paid my five dollars / pounds, I want my monies worth... entertain me.

Which is why, in this tale from 'The House That Dripped Blood' : 'Method For Murder', I never saw the REVEAL in this story coming! Ha! I was with Denholm Elliott's  character, Charles Hillyer all of the way. Isn't that the way it's supposed to be? If not, why are you watching?? As I said, from the off, I recognized the set up, but I wasn't expecting the wrap! Neither did I recognize that actor playing Dominick, the voice of UK's Channel Four four years, the late Tom Adams. Yup, I get good value out of most the films I see. Hey, I was the last person during our family viewing of all those terrible murders, to realize it was, Norman!

#SILENTBUTDEADLYWEDNESDAY! And finally, Peter Cushing's Colonel William Raymond SEES Alex Hyde- White's Jim Ferguson, in 'Biggles: Adventures In Time' from 1986. See? It doesn't get any better than that . . . .

#GIMMETHEGIF : HORRORS IN THE PET SHOP AND MURDERS IN A PARIS ZOO

THIS WEEK'S #GIMMETHEGIF Wednesday requests, brings a nice selection of moments from Peter Cushing's film and television performances. At the TOP, for D Brandshaw that shocking moment from the Hammer House of Horrors tv series, THE SILENT SCREAM (1980). Peter Cushing makes his last appearance in a Hammer film production.

NEXT IN THE ROW is that lovely money shot, from 'BIGGLES: ADVENTURES IN SPACE AND TIME' ....  where we find out,  just who is that suspicious shadowy figure! Tina Goodwin, this  is your GIF!

AND FINALLY a performance that does get much in the way of column inches, because it's been so long since anyone has actually seen the film! 'THE LEGEND OF THE WEREWOLF' has gained more interest through being a film that STILL has no legitimate release on dvd or blu ray, than for being a very god film! Peter Cushing's performance has some very nice black comedy moments, and you get the impression, this is a film, that Cushing actually enjoyed making! C. Hughes, you made a great choice for your GIF request.. that look says it all really!
