#SILENTBUTDEADLY: THE WEEKLY REQUESTED GIFS GALLERY

#SILENTBUTDEADLYWEDNESDAY!: YOU MAY HAVE noticed from our previous post today, where we mark the two year anniversary of Sir Christopher Lee . . . among his many, many roles in the fantasy genre field, the character of Prof Sir Alexander Saxton in the film, 'HORROR EXPRESS' is one of best! Somewhere in the same field as Colonel Bingham in 'NOTHING BUT THE NIGHT', a kind of Duc de Richleay-lite! Authoritative, but no nonsense roll your sleeves up and get stuck in to 'the monster' sort of guy.

I REALLY ENJOY watching this film, not only because you have Cushing and Lee almost on the same side, but Lee really looks to be enjoying himself. Maybe he was happy that he managed to talk his old friend into staying and making the film. Within days of getting to the studio in Spain, Cushing still deeply effected by the passing of his wife, Helen, was in no hurry to unpack his bags and was ready to catch the next plane back to blighty!

#SILENTBUTDEADLYWEDNESDAY!: Requested by Mandy Edwards is this shot from Hammer's 'THE VAMPIRE LOVERS' with Ingrid Pitt pouncing and Ferdy Mayne, fighting for his life! Though the edit of this GIF doesn't quite show that. A few seconds further in, and the whole match becomes a lot rougher and desperate.

UNFORTUNATELY, here it looks like Carmilla is in a playful mood and giving Ferdy's Doctor, who doesn't want to play, a teasing tickling! Cushing flies in and out of this one, but still gets the pay-off scene with the beheading of the sleeping Karnstein!

#SILENTBUTDEADLYWEDNESDAY: YOU KNOW THAT FEELING when in the movie, they've played the scene where 'the monster' has been destroyed, and everyone relaxes then, something happens suddenly, and you discover, nope it ain't dead at all? Well, that's what happens in this shot from Amicus films, 'The Beast Must Die'.

IT TAKES quite a time to get to the point where, the identity of the person who is 'werewolf' is revealed, and then the story tips on it's head. It's well timed in this case, and the almost double take from Cushing and Calvin Lockhart, almost takes their heads off! Requested by Bill 'Bertie' Cleverly!

#MONSTERMONDAY: KARL VON BADEN: TALES OF THE UNEXPECTED

#MONSTERMONDAY: TEUTON KARL VON BADEN . . from Tales of the Unexpected in 1983. ....it may not ring a bell for many here, as it was a UK Television show, but it was syndicated to the US and most of Europe. Cushing's role, was one of his last performances before the camera. There would only be three more roles for Cushing after this, in 'Helen Keller: The Miracle Continues', 'Masks of Death' as Sherlock Holmes and 'Biggles', his last film performance for cinema.

TEUTON KARL VON BADEN is an interesting role, and one I won't spoil here, for the many who may not have seen it. ''Tales of the Unexpected' at this point in 1983 was a shadow of the show that began in the 1970's, with author Roald Dahl's stories and famous introduction...and THAT music!

KARL VON BADEN is a role that Cushing could have played in his sleep just five years previous, that is not to say it's a weak performance, but the script gives him little to do, and it's Cushing who looks weak and frail at this point. It's a story that relies on flashbacks, and much of his screen time is played sitting down. He looks tired, but that helps to bring a poignancy to his role. Cushing shares most of his scenes with another television veteran, John Bailey. Anthony Higgins who plays Cassan in the story, would go on to play Sherlock Holmes in an updated Sherlock series and would also play Moriarty in the film 'Young Sherlock'. Vorpal Blade is a tale set in a sedate rose garden and a castle in Heidelberg... the episode was directed by John Jacobs who produced the other Anglia television series 'Orson Welles Great Mysteries'...in which Cushing also appeared, a wonderful episode entitled, 'La Grande Breteche' in 1973.

    PETER SALLIS DIES AT 96

VERY SAD NEWS, to hear of the passing of veteran actor Peter Sallis today.... Sallis appeared in the film, 'Scream and Scream Again' in 1970. It's a very tenuous link...even though he worked for Hammer films in 'Curse of the Werewolf' and 'Taste the Blood of Dracula' too. But, personally, I am sharing this because... thought he was terrific in the BBC's 'The Last of the Summer Wine' for all those years, and my children LOVED his voice in the Wallace and Gromit films. Sallis was 96. . . .

#GETTHECUSHIONSUNDAY! PRICE AND CUSHING CHAT AND TOP SECRET!

#GETTHECUSHION: A behind the scenes snap of Peter Cushing and the producers of the film, 'TOP SECRET' (1984) ... and the pose subject matter? I have no idea...! It's film you either love or hate, but most seem to remember Cushing's  'Giant Eye' skit, more than the impressive skills he displayed in making the 'reverse action' and dialogue seamless and convincing!

#GETTHECUSHION! A requested repost for Samantha Eyddes, of Peter Cushing and Vincent Price recording, 'Aliens in the Mind', a radio serial recorded and broadcast by the BBC. Samantha brought up the question, as to why Cushing and Price never got to appear in more work together...? It's a tough one to answer, and probably lies somewhere with, 'Not enough opportunities' and 'Some of films of that particular genre, had small budgets, that wouldn't stretch to hiring both!'. along with, 'We could never find a window of time where they were both free!'...

HMM, I AM NOT SURE. One would have thought with the amount of time Price spent every year during the late 1960's and 70's in the UK, there should have been something where the two could have worked together. I always thought the lost opportunity in casting Cushing as one of Lionheart's critics, was one of many. To slip Cushing in as the 'Ship Captain' in the second Phibes film, was a tease and more than a bit mean. Cushing's fee per day was around £750 to £1,200 a day, at this time. At those prices, I wonder why he wasn't used more in Phibes, and appear in Theatre of Blood, Cry of the Banshee, and The Oblong Box?

TO BE FAIR, Cushing was pretty busy in 1971 through to 72... he appeared in over a dozen feature films. So maybe it was about timing? Then, thank havens they had time for 'Madhouse', 'Price of Fear', 'Aliens of the Mind' and 'House of the Long Shadows'...!
