#MONSTERMONDAY: TYBURN'S LEGEND OF THE WEREWOLF ETOILE

#MONSTERMONDAY: WHEN HAMMER FILMS released their one and only 'werewolf' themed film in 1961, The Curse of the Werewolf, Oliver Reed's portrayal of the cursed 'Leon' cast a very large and terrifying shadow over any attempt at that theme for a long time. Maybe it was only in 1981, with the arrival of 'An American Werewolf In London' did the 'go to' reference shift from Olly and Hammer.

IT WASN'T AS IF there were no other lycanthropic releases until then, far from it, it's just that like many 'Monster pictures'...the film flies or fails on the performance of the actor and without doubt, the appearance and standard of the make up job. Roy Ashton, the artist behind the hammer make up on Curse, did such an amazing job, to take what had been seen sometimes as, 'an actor with a LOT of YAK hair glued to his face.... and make a convincing wolf-man creation, from latex and hair.

#MONSTERMONDAY: Professor Paul (Peter Cushing) saying goodbye to his sliver cane from Tyburn's Legend Of The Werewolf (1975)

BOTH ASHTON and 'Legend' make up artist Graham Freeborn, favored the 'white timber-wolf' appearance...which somehow gave the man wolf a more neater, groomed and realistic appearance..a far cry from what had sometimes looked like the results of man caught in 'glue pot, freak wind, sweepings from barber shop floor' incident! David Rintoul played the unfortunate Etoile, the lycanthrope of the film's title....who until that time, had never set foot or paw in a film studio.

MORE ON LEGEND OF THE WEREWOLF : HERE!

HOW DO YOU RATE Rintoul's werewolf appearance and performance? BTW.....Back in 1978 we were the first to have interviewed David Rintoul about this role and his time with Peter Cushing and Tyburn..... I hope to share this video interview, in it's entirety when we launch the PCAS POD CASTS and on our ever expanding youtube channel later in the year...

DOUBLE BILL OF PETER CUSHING : SHERLOCK AND A WEREWOLF!

ALL UPLOADS AND CLIPS AT OUR
YOUTUBE CHANNEL ARE NON MONETIZED.

ANOTHER NEW DOUBLE BILL at our PCAS YOUTUBE CHANNEL TWO rare Peter Cushing films, that have never had a digital release. One marks Cushing's last performance as Sherlock Holmes and the other, interestingly is a story that originally started life as the original idea, that went on to become #HAMMERFILMS bench-mark in Gothic werewolf horror, 'The Curse of the werewolf, directed by Terence Fisher and starring Oliver Reed!

ALTHOUGH HE NEVER GETS THE CREDIT, back in the 1970's, producer Kevin Francis did a very brave thing indeed, with his company, 'Tyburn films'. Just as the film industry in the UK, was in it's last gasps, Francis nailed his colours and formed a production company, that not only gave us three very good Peter Cushing releases...but also a format for making feature films in the UK, that was new, cost effective and quite radical. Sadly, even with the best plan in the world, nothing could stop the rot, that turned off the oxygen, to what was once one of the country's greatest assets and exports. That was then, now...put your feet up and enjoy Francis's vision of a great Peter Cushing movie... he went on to become a very close friend to Cushing, but was also very much a HUGE FAN of his work.

#THROWBACKTHURSDAY: REMEMEBERED TODAY: ANTON DIFFRING

REMEMBERING: ANTON DIFFRING. Born today in 1918, Anton Diffring came from a family that boasted generations of actors. Cool and noble with a German accent, he was first in line when the casting call went out for German officers with a nasty streak. He quickly slipped into the role of Baron Frankenstein for the pilot episode of Hammer films and Columbia Pictures, 'Tales of Frankenstein' in 1958 and even quicker filled the role of Dr. Georges Bonnet in Hammer's 'The Man Who Could Cheat Death' in 1959, when the studio found themselves without Peter Cushing for the role.

READ OUR REVIEW WITH GALLERY AT OUR SISTER WEBSITE : HERE

Diffring is probably best remembered for his roles in 'The Blue Max' in 1966, 'Where Eagles Dare' in 1968 and François Truffaut's Fahrenheit 451 (1966) He was also cast in several film alongside Peter Cushing, 'Shatter' for Hammer in 1974, 'The Beast Must Die' for Amicus also 74 and Tyburn's 'The Masks of Death' with Peter Cushing as an elderly Sherlock Holmes in 1984. Anton Diffring died in 1989 aged 70.

#ONSETSATURDAY: DALEKS AND WEREWOLVES!

#ONSETSATURDAY Peter Cushing with Calvin Lockhart shooting THE BEAST MUST DIE (1974) for Amicus films. This film was the last horror film produced by Amicus which had the involvement of co-founder Milton Subotsky. Despite director Paul Annett's objections, producer Milton Subotsky (who hated the film) insisted on the werewolf break gimmick where the viewer is invited to guess who the werewolf is. Due to the film's small budget, the werewolf was played by a German Shepherd. . . . see on the thread below...!

It's a DOG! It's An GERMAN SHEPHERD! It's...a werewolf?????

#ONSETSATURDAY: Bernard Cribbins and Jill Curzon during the making of the SECOND Cushing Dr Who Dalek movie, Daleks Invasion Earth 2150AD. Produced for a estimated budget of £286,000, the 'end of the world locations' for this film were, the Thames River side jetty at Battersea church Road London, and the derelict Bendy Toy factory, Ashford, Kent, England, UK ! TRIVIA: When Tom (Cribbins) and the Doctor (Cushing) are searching the warehouse in the film, for a crowbar, Tom is ACTUALLY carrying one in his hand!

#GIMMETHEGIF : HORRORS IN THE PET SHOP AND MURDERS IN A PARIS ZOO

THIS WEEK'S #GIMMETHEGIF Wednesday requests, brings a nice selection of moments from Peter Cushing's film and television performances. At the TOP, for D Brandshaw that shocking moment from the Hammer House of Horrors tv series, THE SILENT SCREAM (1980). Peter Cushing makes his last appearance in a Hammer film production.

NEXT IN THE ROW is that lovely money shot, from 'BIGGLES: ADVENTURES IN SPACE AND TIME' ....  where we find out,  just who is that suspicious shadowy figure! Tina Goodwin, this  is your GIF!

AND FINALLY a performance that does get much in the way of column inches, because it's been so long since anyone has actually seen the film! 'THE LEGEND OF THE WEREWOLF' has gained more interest through being a film that STILL has no legitimate release on dvd or blu ray, than for being a very god film! Peter Cushing's performance has some very nice black comedy moments, and you get the impression, this is a film, that Cushing actually enjoyed making! C. Hughes, you made a great choice for your GIF request.. that look says it all really!

GIF GALLERY WEDNESDAY IS GIMMETHEGIFWEDNESDAY

SO HERE WE ARE... with our SECOND #GIMMETHEGIFWEDNESDAY! Keep those requests a-comingand we will do our best to, find that clip and make that gif!  What makes a great gif? Here are two of the things to consider when choosing your gif, the best gifs are a short section of film with no dialogue...remember a gif plays without any audio. Maybe some thing that has high drama or action... a gif can be only 5 to 12 seconds long...

GIFS below are from 'Flesh and the fiends', for Bella Podtetenieff. 'Horror Express'  for Tom Boulton and 'Legend of the Werewolf' for Lexi Conroy.

#TBT : A BIT OF A CANINE WHIFF TO TODAY'S POSTS . . .

THERE'S A DEFINITE CANINE WHIFF, to this weeks ‪#‎throwbackthursday‬! A lovely example of Peter playing 'black comedy' in a scene from Tyburn films, 'Legend of the Werewolf' below, as we remember one of three flirts Cushing had with monsters, of the barking kind! Later today, we have the very 'barking' results from last weeks' 'Twilight Time Baskervilles Blu Ray Compo!

THEN WE WILL BE BRINGING YOU SOME very early Hollywood Peter Cushing, in a clip from a film, that sounds as if it COULD be about a dog, but thankfully isn't! All that to come, in the meantime, let's sit and 'growl' about the fact that Legend of the Werewolf STILL isn't available as a commercial dvd or blu ray... it's enough to get anyone howling!!
