BBC DRACULA 2020 ALIVE OR DOA? PLUS TERENCE FISHER REMEMBERED ON ANNIVERSARY OF HIS PASSING

SPOILERS: Back at the beginning in 2020 when some of us started to invest eye-ball time in a much promoted and anticipated production the BBC was rolling out, little did we know what was just around the corner for many of us, many of our friends and families.... and now, six months later, have I found time to catch up on trivial matter like entertainment. Last night I watched the BBC serial of Dracula, written by Mark Gatiss and Steven Moffat, starring Claes Bang as Count Dracula and Dolly Wells as Sister Agatha Van Helsing, plus a ship load of other talented cast members. Back in January I had managed to watch episode one and two, but wrapping the series has been out of my reach since then, so watching from scratch, was he treat last night. It was certainly something different, written and created by two pretty obvious fans of Lee, Cushing and Hammer - Gatiss and Moffat!

THERE'S LOTS OF NODS and visual paying tributes to Hammer, in-particular, 'Dracula AD 1972' and 'The Satanic Rites of Dracula' .. the last of the Cushing/Lee Hammer series of Dracula films. All lovingly presented, sneaked in or peeping around the corner 😏😊The climax of the series also presented elements of the iconic Cushing and Lee 'fight to the death' from the 1958 movie. All very good and full of twists and turns. I couldn't help thinking back to how maybe many of the Hammer fans felt when Dracula AD and Satanic was released! 'What is THIS???' 😆😉What is it? In my personal opinion, it's all good, exciting and a great turn on a classic and much loved horror-tale, often produced and presented in a modern turn, but of all such modern packages, this was certainly my favourite! Well done, Gatiss and Moffat! Over at the FACEBOOK PCASUK FAN PAGE, I've asked everyone to share their thoughts and opinions on the page post! It will be interesting to find out, what everyone thinks, having a few months to think about it!

REMEMBERING TERENCE FISHER TODAY who passed on this day in 1980. If you enjoy any of the better Hammer films of the 1950's and 60's . . this is the point, you doff your cap 😉 There can be few directors who worked for Hammer films, who did so much to develop that Hammer-in-house style. Terence Fisher, WAS Hammer. Along with Peter Cushing, Christopher Lee and the players who helped under pin the rich vision of fairy-tale come Gothic nightmare style. Even when the 'monsters' were 'shaky' the script, with more holes than a Swiss cheese... the look, pace and world beautifully styled by Fisher, just sat so well. The Curse of Frankenstein in 1957 was the first, it also lit the rocket that would spin Peter Cushing into a new and long lasting career within the fantasy genre and Christopher Lee, on scraping off the make up and anonymity as 'the monster', would soon don a cloak and a feral shocking performance as Dracula, that set him on path, for more Fisher, Cushing Hammer classics to come. The Mummy, The Gorgon, and The Hound of the Baskervilles, still stand, as maybe the best of Terence Fisher and Hammer.

TERENCE FISHER was one of the most prominent horror directors of the second half of the 20th century. He was the first to bring gothic horror alive in full colour, and the sexual overtones and explicit horror in his films, while mild by modern standards, were unprecedented in his day. Fisher although aware of the terrifying elements of his Hammer films, would only smile when questioned about their shock factor, and answer...'I make wicked fairy tales...!' Fisher also along with Lee and Cushing, had a wicked sense of humor, hints of which can often been seen on the screen. Given their subject matter and lurid approach, Fisher's films, though commercially successful, were largely dismissed by critics during his career. It is only in recent years that Fisher has become recognised as an auteur in his own right . . .

WARNING: TARKIN CUSHING GOES VERY BUFF AND VERY NASTY!

WARNING! For those of you who were miffed, not happy, annoyed and horrified at the CGI Cushing / Tarkin in the movie, 'Rogue One' . . you might want to turn... look away from your monitor, tablet or phone, right now......

I AM NOT A COMIC READER, except for the stray Beano or Dandy that drifts my way😊 So it's a shock, to see that for some time, the Star Wars comics have been busy revealing just how dark, brutal, and vicious Grand Moff Tarkin really could be. Ripped and half naked, the Moff looks quite something 😮😯 Cushing too, until the early 1970's was quite the athlete, muscles and the works from playing rugby, swimming and sports! But here in Cushing's likeness, the comic Tarkin is more than a little 'fit' he's ... vicious! But for all that, I don't think anyone was prepared for...... this! These frames of comic art are just a sneak at what you can expect if you flick the pages of 'Star Wars: Age of Rebellion - Grand Moff Tarkin #1', one of several one-shot comics intended to tell previously untold stories in the lives of some of the most iconic characters from the galaxy far, far away. Behind this is writer Greg Pak, and artist Marc Laming who have been hard at work, crafting this unbelievable chapter of Tarkin's life. Revealing a man whose 'cup of tea', you certainly would NOT want to nudge and spill....! Over at FACEBOOK PCASUK FAN PAGE we are asking, 'What do you think?' ..and getting some interesting answers . .

I AM VERY grateful for the four issue covers images sent by Greg Anderson to us recently. Greg tells me the art work inside, is quite exceptional! Do YOU have any of these issues too?

THIS OF COURSE, isn't the first time Peter Cushing has been featured in comic art. There is a whole history... and you can find out more in a feature I put together some time ago . . . JUST CLICK HERE! 😉

HOW MUCH DID A VAMPIRE HUNTER GET PAID PER DAY IN 1972?

RECENTLY 'THE PROPS GALLERY' has started sharing a scan of Peter Cushing's contact for Hammer films, 'THE SATANIC RITES OF DRACULA back in 1973. Cushing's was playing one of his most iconic roles as vampire hunter, Van Helsing for the third time for Hammer films, starring alongside Christopher Lee as Count Dracula. After the sad passing of his wife, Helen Cushing in 1971, a period of his long and acute grief with a intense course of work. Cushing signed up and appeared in almost a dozen films in just over a twelve month period. Not all were staring or man roles, but each required commitment and provided work to keep the griving Peter Cushing occupied. Companies like Amicus films, whoose practice of applying as many star names as possible to the film's bill and cast role, were able to offer Cushing quite a few opportunites. Even though Amicus were known for their tight budgets, it was according their producer, Milton Subotsky, never a problem to negotiate a contact and deal with John Redway Cushing's agent for many years.

FROM THE BEGINNING of the 1970's Cushing daily rate was between £250 to £350 a day. Sometimes this would be adjusted, depending on what Cushing was expected to actually do on the day. During one of our Subotsky interviews in the 1980's, Milton with a smile told us that, 'It was never an issue with Peter. You could always find a way. He never out priced himself.' Today a total sum of £6,000 for a second billing actor for five weeks of work, may seem a little slim! But at this time, this was indeed a respectable sum. In 1971, £100 UK pounds by today's value was worth roughly £1,386. 76p!! So not a sum to snif at 😉

NOW HE'S REALLY ANGRY! CUSHING LEE DRACULA HARKER HAMMER GIFS

NOW HE'S  REALLY ANGRY! Jonathan Harker in a dance with death! Never has Christopher Lee's DRACULA looked more feral than in the scene from Hammer films, 'DRACULA' /'HORROR OF DRACULA'  starring Peter Cushing as Van Helsing in 1958.

Actor John Van Eyssen did a great job of playing Harker, and went on to appear in only nine other feature films, then leave his acting career in 1961 and become the head of the Grade Organisation literary agency.  He then left the business in 65 to take up a position in the UK division of Columbia Pictures, eventually becoming Managing Director in July 1969. Finally in 1970, he was promoted to Worldwide Head of Production (ex-USA) and moved to New York.

After his tenure at Columbia, Van Eyssen became an independent producer, returning to the UK in 1991 to establish Britain's premier showcase for talented young filmmakers, the Chelsea Film Festival. Born Matthew John Du Toit Van in Africa in 1922, he died in 1995, aged 73 in London. Interestingly, his son, David Van Eyssen, is a US-based producer and director known for the web-series RCVR.

AND HERE'S ONE MORE FOR THE POT! Peter Cushing as Van Helsing on rushing to the celler of the Holmwood family home, finds DRACULA's hiding place, at first minus the Count. Until . . . . .
