NOT THAT LONG AGO IN A GALAXY NOT THAT FAR AWAY : NOTHING IS ORIGINAL

IF YOU WRITE, BE IT FOR a blog, facebook page or even for your own amusement, do you ever feel like all the great ideas have already been taken by the ‘real’ writers out there?  Do you ever think that maybe you’re not capable of an original idea? Me? I fight with it daily! Pablo Picasso once said, 'Nothing is truly original; we all build on the work, knowledge, wisdom and accomplishments of others'. In the inspiring book, 'Steal Like an Artist, 10 Things Nobody Told You About Being Creative - by Austin Kleon, he states, 'Nobody is born with a style or a voice. We don’t come out of the womb knowing who we are. In the beginning, we learn by pretending to be our heroes.  We learn by copying' and 'We’re talking about practice here, not plagiarism – plagiarism is trying to pass someone else’s work off as your own.  Copying is about reverse engineering.  It’s like a mechanic taking apart a car to see how it works!' With these gems of wisdom already in mind, I recently came across a quite startling feature, that has appeared at the tvandmovienews.com site.

ABOVE : Even without the photograph of Peter Cushing provided on the right. I think most film buffs would identify the illustration on the left to have more than a shadow of a resemblance to Cushing's appearance as Grand Moff Tarkin in 'Star Wars' (1977)? When you find that the character is also of ranking and an Ambassador in the 1975 Valérian volume 'Ambassador of the Shadows', it clicks?

ABOVE : In the 1971's Empire of a Thousand Planets, the figure on the left appears as a member of a strange group known as the 'Enlightened'. When he is unmasked, he reveals a  face that is damaged, scarred and burned, similarly to Darth Vader's on the right in the 1983 'The Return of the Jedi'

THE FEATURE and writing appears uncredited and explores a story that seems to have been quite common knowledge in the 'Star Wars' community for quite sometime, but for me, not being a reader of comic sci fi fiction, it's all news! It's such a startling theory and reveal, that I had to go look it up further. As it's base is grounded on the idea of plagiarism and theft, I was somewhat taken aback to see WHOLE slabs of this feature, reproduced typo errors and all, on other websites and blogs! Ironic or what? So, in presenting and writing my own take on this story.. I have to tread carefully. 😉😀 All the comic frames, are indeed not mine, I have 'borrowed them' from www.core77.com and http://www.tvandmovienews.com. Here goes . .

ABOVE : The Millennium Falcon maybe one of the most loved and respected space craft in sci fi cinema history. Can we say after all the work, the multiple design stages and planning that the Millennium Falcon went through, that this was also a lift from the 1971's The Empire of a Thousand Planets comic? I am not sure . .

IF YOU WERE one of the fortunates, who is old enough to remember when the FIRST 'Star Wars' movie was released back in May 25th 1977... just one day before Peter Cushing's 64th birthday, two days before Christopher Lee's and Vincent Price's birthdays... then undoubtedly you'll also remember leaving the cinema with total glee and wonder at the whole amazing package, you had just witnessed! For many, myself included I was stunned by the scale of the special effects, the sounds, the music, the 'other universe' creatures, the whole emotional ride and the fact my favourite actor, Peter Cushing who up until this film, had been taking a bit of a back-seat as far as 'amazing movies' were concerned was now also on that big screen and part of this mind blowing, fresh, new and exciting film! As far as movie experiences were concerned, as a teenager I seriously asked myself how could I ever be THIS excited over a new movie ever again!

ABOVE : The two outfits here do bear a striking similarity to each other, although Industrial Light & Magic costume designer Aggie Rodgers, cited the work of fantasy artist Frank Frazetta as her main inspiration. The Empire Strikes Back, Leia Organa is enslaved by a morbidly obese ruler (Jabba the Hutt), and forced to wear a revealing slave-girl outfit. Believe it or not, almost the exact same thing happens to Laureline in the 1972 Valérian volume World Without Stars; although, in this case, the overweight monarch is Emperor Alzafar, who rules the city of Valsennar and has pioneered a system where women are basically responsible for everything, including fighting in wars.

ABOVE : In the 1971 'Valérian and Laureline' compilation 'Empire of a Thousand Planets', Valérian is frozen is a substance that bears an uncanny resemblance to Carbonite, the substance Han Solo was frozen in nearly a decade later in 1980's 'The Empire Strikes Back'. As pointed out, by The Film Theorists, Valérian's memory loss while frozen matches up a known symptom of Carbonite sickness.

MY NEXT QUESTION WAS, who was responsible for all this? What super gifted writer, put together such a thrilling concept, impressive script and very likeable and fascinating characters? The answer was quickly discovered, by me on the TV news that evening, a quite shy, quietly spoken bearded guy, from the US called George Lucas, who had been nursing the whole concept for years. It was his baby, his creation that he had been touting around the studios for quite some time. Wow! What I would have given to have just a few grains of his imaginative brain cells back then!

ABOVE : The 'Moss Eisley Cantina' is one of the Star Wars universe's key locations, as well as one of its most popular. While its overall layout was most likely based on real-life cantinas, there's no denying the fact that an 'alien bar' with a certain semblance of sameness appears on the pages of Valérian.

NOW? I AM NOT SOOOO SURE 😲😗😃 This weekend, reaching my fifth week of self isolation, during this very weird and frightening time, as well as weighing up the pros and cons of IF I should start decorating the hall and  living room, I have been chewing over, the starling evidence of WHERE did George source those Star Wars characters, concepts and ideas? Taking into account of ol Pablo's point, I am not sure what I think or where Lucas lies in the whole scheme of things. Certainly, illustrator and artist, Jean-Claude Mezieres knows EXACTLY where his thoughts lie. It seems that George, for all three original Star Wars films had 'borrowed' quite liberally from the 'ideas and concepts' pantry of a French comic series called 'Valerian and Laureline' and had done so, without making reference or credit to its creators. This very popular sci fi comic was amazingly illustrated by one Jean- Claude Mezieres and written by Pierre Christin.

AT THE TIME, of the release of 'Star Wars' and the following two other movies, Mezieres was said to be, quite understandably, incensed. Now with both gentlemen in late seventies, they have simmered a little helped by their work finally getting some well deserved credit and influencing the 2017 film, 'Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets', directed by a major fan, Luc Beeson!

IF YOU WOULD LIKE to share your thoughts on this feature, it is also being posted and shared on the FACEBOOK PCASUK FAN PAGE TODAY! Your comments and input would be most welcome!

WARNING: TARKIN CUSHING GOES VERY BUFF AND VERY NASTY!

WARNING! For those of you who were miffed, not happy, annoyed and horrified at the CGI Cushing / Tarkin in the movie, 'Rogue One' . . you might want to turn... look away from your monitor, tablet or phone, right now......

I AM NOT A COMIC READER, except for the stray Beano or Dandy that drifts my way😊 So it's a shock, to see that for some time, the Star Wars comics have been busy revealing just how dark, brutal, and vicious Grand Moff Tarkin really could be. Ripped and half naked, the Moff looks quite something 😮😯 Cushing too, until the early 1970's was quite the athlete, muscles and the works from playing rugby, swimming and sports! But here in Cushing's likeness, the comic Tarkin is more than a little 'fit' he's ... vicious! But for all that, I don't think anyone was prepared for...... this! These frames of comic art are just a sneak at what you can expect if you flick the pages of 'Star Wars: Age of Rebellion - Grand Moff Tarkin #1', one of several one-shot comics intended to tell previously untold stories in the lives of some of the most iconic characters from the galaxy far, far away. Behind this is writer Greg Pak, and artist Marc Laming who have been hard at work, crafting this unbelievable chapter of Tarkin's life. Revealing a man whose 'cup of tea', you certainly would NOT want to nudge and spill....! Over at FACEBOOK PCASUK FAN PAGE we are asking, 'What do you think?' ..and getting some interesting answers . .

I AM VERY grateful for the four issue covers images sent by Greg Anderson to us recently. Greg tells me the art work inside, is quite exceptional! Do YOU have any of these issues too?

THIS OF COURSE, isn't the first time Peter Cushing has been featured in comic art. There is a whole history... and you can find out more in a feature I put together some time ago . . . JUST CLICK HERE! 😉

#SILENTBUTDEADLY! : DOCTOR WHO AND THREE SIXES : DARTH AND MOTH GIRL SIZZLE!

#SILENTBUTDEADLYWEDNESDAY! WHO, ME AND THE NUMBER SIX! There are a few great shots in Cushing's first #DRWHO movie, 'Dr Who And The Daleks' (1965) and this, is one of them. Not only because, it's SIX..count em, Six Daleks in a row, but for a kid of SIX at the time, this was without doubt, after the slight of my first 'CHOPPER' bicycle, the coolest thing I had ever seen. I was pretty caught up in the whole Dalek thing at this time and got my Dad to queue with me in the pouring rain, to see this film, the first day it arrived at our local flicks.

I didn't know who Peter Cushing was at this time, and wasn't bothered that he bore little resemblance to the Dr Who I knew from the tv series. It's the memory of this shot and the image of the dalek out of its armour suit, that I carried with me to school the following day. Such was my recalling of the drama, the excitement to my school pals . . . they too were soon pestering their parents, to trek to the 'Palace Cinema' and see for themselves. Thus, I got to see this film, SIX times that Summer. Happy days . . .

#SILENTBUTDEADLY! Christopher Lee and Barbara Shelley in Dracula Prince of Darkness. Peter Cushing had a guest appearance . . .un-credited...as Van Helsing in the prologue, the ending from the previous Dracula in 1958... some years had past since Lee's first appearance as Dracula in that film, do you think his performance as the Count was as good in this sequel??

#SILENTBUTDEADLYGIFWEDNESDAY! AMICUS writer and producer, Milton Subotsky once told me that, he saw films that ended with a 'FIRE', as in the film ends and it all burns down.. as a disappointing lack of imagination on the script writers part. He must have held some store in that theory, because i can only think of just TWO film that he wrote or produced that ended with a big boom or fire. AT THE EARTH'S CORE above, is one of the two, and I guess the source material of the book, that the film was loosely based on, did influence the climax of the film. So, ONE other Amicus film that ends with fire? Do you know which one?

#SILENTBUTDEADLYWEDNESDAY! THE GREAT THING about rubber is, it burns very well! Looking weirdly for all the world, like the death pyre of 'DARTH VADER' in 'RETURN OF THE JEDI', the 'Death-Head-Moth-Woman' bit the dust, just before we could get a good look at here. Monsters eh?

Peter Cushing and Glyn Edwards play the investigating coppers in 'The Blood Beast Terror', entertaining performances, though Cushing thought the concept a bit weak. Edwards who had starred in the film Zulu, played quite a few policemen...and a certain barman in a much loved, long running BBC comedy too . . .

#THROWBACKTHURSDAY: Here's a VERY popular character that Peter Played 'A long, Long Time Ago...' and just keeps on giving! You may remember me posting some exclusive photographs here of Peter Cushing's TARKIN as an amazing new figure from HOT TOYS? Well, Graham Alexander Holden, provided those great pics, and today as promised he got in touch, to let us know that HOT TOYS have posted a great gallery of images of the Cushing Tarkin figure on their facebook page, and they look terrific! Graham told me, ' The Tarkin figure is also going to be part of a package containing Vader, as well as other extras. This will make it a very pricey purchase, so for those on a limited budget, the single figure purchase will be the better option!' Good advice. #MONSTERMONDAY: DARTH VADER

#MONSTERMONDAY: He's been called the ultimate baddie, the bad guy's, bad guy! The most evil force in the Star wars universe! He is probably all those things... plus for us, he is another character from the dark-side of the Peter Cushing filmography... Cushing having appeared with him in #STARWARS as the other black-hat, Grand Moff Tarkin. Together they made quite the team, making knees tremble, planets explode and giving audiences down the years, much to boo at... even if he did receive redemption at the end...and that is why today we celebrate, and bestow our #monstermonday crown, to #DARTHVADER, a FORCE to be reckoned with indeed!

TOTALLY TARKIN? : GO COMPARE

SPOILERS: #GETTHECUSHIONITSCUSHING! 'Suddenly all heads turn as Commander Tagge's speech is cut short and the Grand Moff Tarkin, governor of the imperial outland regions, enters. He is followed by his powerful ally,The Sith Lord, Darth Vader. All of the generals stand and bow before the thin, evil-looking governor as he takes his place at the head of the table. The Dark Lord stands behind him.'

THAT IS HOW, George Lucas outlined the entrance and desciption of Peter Cushing's Grand Moff Tarkin in the script of #STARWARS (1977) There can be few roles that Cushing played that were so ruthless and evil, on such a grand scale? Here's a chance to see BOTH cinematic TARKIN'S. Personally, I think we have yet to get to the point of the CGI being flawless..but this will do for me. BOTH are quite amazing, for different reasons. Maybe things in the industry will never be the same, I think it's an interesting tool, and how wonderful, that this first step on such a grand scale, will always be associated with Peter Cushing.....

GIMMETHEGIF AND THROWBACKTHURSDAY : MISSING LINK POPSICLE AND NEW RARE STILLS!

#GIMMETHEGIF Requested for M Taylor. Peter Cushing as the Shop Proprietor looks out of the shop window, for the chance of passing trade. Actually, it looks like my kind of shop, if it wasn't for the fear of a fate worse than death, I would have loved a rummage in there! What was the BEST second hand /used item you have ever found??? Antique dealer's, Yard sale, car boot sale or second hand shop? Mine was probably Peter Cushing writing desk. My wife says hers was, me.......!

#GIMMETHEGIF REQUESTED for John Edwards..  MISSING LINK POPSICLE, ANYONE? Professor Alexander Saxton (Christopher Lee) making his discovery , from Horror Express (1972)

#GIMMETHEGIFWEDNESDAY: For Desi Symmonds, David Warner rising to the challenge in the Amicus films portmanteau movie, 'FROM BEYOND THE GRAVE'

#GIMMETHEGIF Requested . .. How things had changed in the Horror cinema world by the time Hammer's DRACULA AD 1972 arrived. One could be mistaken in thinking the these shots had been under-cranked (sped up) to give the film more pace for the fashion of quick shots, edits and dutch tilts was in! Not so... the action shots were filmed at a slow timed pace, so everyone stayed in frame and on their spots..any mistakes would mean filming another take..and that meant more money!!! Hammer were tighter that a vampire's nailed down coffin lid!!

#THROWBACKTHURSDAY . . . .  CAN YOU HEAR HEAVY BREATHING??

#THROWBACKTHURSDAY: It's great when new pics of Peter Cushing surface... even better when the have NEVER been seen before! Here are two very good examples of that... Many, many thanks to Stefan Lange, who has kindly shared these two wonderful and rare photographs with us!
