ADAM NIMOY ON CUSHING CGI IN ROGUE ONE 'A GREAT IDEA FOR SPOCK'!

OPINION? I had the pleasure to watch Adam Nimoy's documentary about his father, Leonard last night. 'For The Love Of Spock' is an intelligent, frank and loving tribute and well worth catching, even of you are not a Trek fan.

YESTERDAY, Adam during a promotional interview for a Deep Space Nine documentary, Adam shared his thoughts on Peter Cushing's CGI appearance in 'ROGUE ONE'...and shared what some may think is a controversial opinion on his father's legacy.... I have shared the quote below. I am a Nimoy fan, not particularly for his portrayal of Spock, I liked the man's style and his core values in life. But, this made me think too...Are you thinking?? If so, please share 😉

'Adam Nimoy, the director of the upcoming Deep Space Nine documentary, was asked how he would feel if Leonard Nimoy was digitally added to the upcoming CBS show Star Trek: Discovery, or the fourth film in the rebooted movie franchise. Nimoy said he was more than open to the idea. He said was impressed with how Rogue One brought back Grand Moff Tarkin, and would enjoy seeing his father given the same treatment...

“Yeah I think it’s an interesting idea. I loved what they did in Rogue One. I thought it was pretty clever, and I was blown away by it, frankly. All of the stuff that Peter Cushing was doing was mind-boggling to me. I’m a sucker for that stuff. I think it should certainly be explored, but I’m not the final arbiter as to whether it’s going to happen, but I think it’s a great idea, personally.”

IT MIGHT NOT make sense to bring Leonard Nimoy’s Spock back in the rebooted film series, since he already received a respectful send-off in Star Trek: Beyond after the actor’s death in 2015. However, there is a case to be made for Discovery, since it takes place while Spock was serving under Commander Pike on the Enterprise. Unfortunately, it might take awhile for that to happen. Television shows typically have smaller budgets than feature films, and Rogue One producer John Knoll said the process of reviving Tarkin on-screen was expensive and time-consuming.

ROGUE ONE BLU RAY DVD AND 3D CONTENTS REVEALED : TRAILER : CASES ART WORK

NEWS: ROGUE ONE BLU RAY CONTENTS REVEALED AND TRAILER! And the line up of the contents sound good too! Can't wait to own this one. What do YOU think of the contents???

THE STAR WARS stand-alone has earned more than $1 billion at the box office. Disney has revealed that Rogue One will hit Digital HD on March 24 and Blu-ray on April 4th. There are a very large helping of bonus features, but a few of the more intriguing ones include "Epilogue: The Story Continues," which is billed as the cast and crew looking forward to the Star Wars tales to come, and "Rogue Connections," which looks at the film's Easter eggs.

AS WE HOPED, there also is a featurette examining the visual effects that went into resurrecting Peter Cushing's Grand Moff Tarkin and brought back a young Princess Leia (The late Carrie Fisher). Rogue One earned more than $1 billion worldwide at the box office, including $528.8 million in the U.S. The second Star Wars stand-alone movie, about a young Han Solo, will be released in May 2018.

TOTALLY TARKIN? : GO COMPARE

SPOILERS: #GETTHECUSHIONITSCUSHING! 'Suddenly all heads turn as Commander Tagge's speech is cut short and the Grand Moff Tarkin, governor of the imperial outland regions, enters. He is followed by his powerful ally,The Sith Lord, Darth Vader. All of the generals stand and bow before the thin, evil-looking governor as he takes his place at the head of the table. The Dark Lord stands behind him.'

THAT IS HOW, George Lucas outlined the entrance and desciption of Peter Cushing's Grand Moff Tarkin in the script of #STARWARS (1977) There can be few roles that Cushing played that were so ruthless and evil, on such a grand scale? Here's a chance to see BOTH cinematic TARKIN'S. Personally, I think we have yet to get to the point of the CGI being flawless..but this will do for me. BOTH are quite amazing, for different reasons. Maybe things in the industry will never be the same, I think it's an interesting tool, and how wonderful, that this first step on such a grand scale, will always be associated with Peter Cushing.....

MONDAY ALSO brought us this little teaser of info above . . . .no doubt the drip feed will start soon, and DECEMBER will be here again, before we know it!

TUESDAY: BROUGHT MORE FROM THE #STARWARS universe, with these two #TOOCOOLTUESDAY posts, and two splendid cartoons... poor ol Krennic...

WEDNESDAY IS ALWAYS #GIMMETHEGIFWEDNESDAY! And above is just a sample of the ones YOU requested this week, and a scattering of GIFS shared during the week of posts . . .A few favorites there, how many of the films can you name? I'll post the answers at the bottom of this post 🙂

THURSDAY: AND #THROWBACKTHURSDAY brought us a dapper Peter Cushing with friend, George Copper out for a stroll and a photo op, during a party with the Old Vic Company in 1949.  During this time, with finances almost at zero, Cushing engaged in work with Olivier's company in a production of Chekhov's, 'Jest In One Act', entitled 'The Proposal'. A review in April's 'Theatre World' wrote, '...Peter Cushing as Lomov, reveals himself as a comedian of outstanding gifts..' Below a publicity still from the production with Cushing as Lomov and Derek Penley . . . .

FRIDAY: WE MARKED MICHAEL RIPPER'S BIRTHDAY! 'I've seen the likes tonight, that mortal eyes shouldn't look at!'... say that line of dialogue and any Hammer film fan worth his or her salt, quick as a flash will reply, 'Michael Ripper, as the poacher in 'The Mummy!'.. And it is Michael Ripper who we remember today on the day his birth, 27th January 1913. Ripper appeared in many productions for Hammer, seven with Peter Cushing, nine with Christopher Lee. Inn keepers, coachmen, police officers, Ripper an accomplished stage and film actor it could be argued is as much part of the Hammer family as Cushing, Lee, Fisher and Francis. Christopher Lee once announced to a packed convention in Baltimore, with Ripper standing at his side.. 'This man IS Hammer!' And for many of us, he always will be…. What are some of your favorite Ripper performances?

FRIDAY ALSO BROUGHT US THIS GEM! A chance to see SIDE BY SIDE comparisons of Peter Cushing from his 1977 Tarkin performance and the CGI from 2016 in Rogue One... also the images of both the late Carrie Fisher and her younger CGI from Rogue One... What do you think???

TARKIN: MAYBE CUSHING WOULD HAVE LIKED THE CGI AFTER ALL!

#TOOCOOLTUESDAY After the initial wave of interest and wonder at the results of Peter Cushing's CGI Tarkin appearance in #ROGUEONE, there was a subtle turn of opinion in the press and tabloids, about the question of what Peter Cushing would have made of it all. This quote doesn't provide the answer, but it does shed some light onto his desire to have appeared in another appearance in the #STARWARS saga. What do you think? — with Peter Cushing, Grand Moff Tarkin, Rogue One and Star Wars.

CUSHING COPY: ROGUE ONE NOT THE FIRST

#ROGUEONE is not the first time that Peter Cushing has had a likiness of his face/ head appear on the big screen... Here is Peter with, his 'chopped noggin' on the set of 'The House That Dripped Blood' (1971)...granted this head didn't cost the earth in CGI effects, and maybe wasn't the most reliable of replica's...but back in the day, we gave it the 'nod'😉

THE GUARDIAN NEWS PAPER 16th December 2016
'The effect is remarkable, if uncanny, and the technology is breathtaking. How the trick was pulled off remains a mystery as the wizards at Lucas Film and Disney remaining tight-lipped about their achievement. Since the start of cinema, its technical magic has always made us gasp, and seeing Cushing interacting, near seamlessly, with new characters brings a smile to the face'.

THE WASHINGTON POST December 15th 2016
'If “Rogue One” wins an Oscar for effects, Cushing — or rather, “Cushing” — should be in no small part why.

'Under director Gareth Edwards, “Rogue One” represents another marker in the decades-long quest for the best CGI-fashioned human replicas. The filmmakers auditioned actors to “play” Cushing’s Tarkin, settling on BBC soap actor Guy Henry. This Tarkin is thus free of the dreaded “dead eye” effect. Lo, though the effects wizards walk through the “uncanny valley,” Tarkin registers as quite alive — even if his facial proportions sometimes read as ever so slightly off from the Original Trilogy. We are nearing the reality of a fully fleshed-out, CGI-enhanced performance long after an actor has passed.'

THE MAN WHO WOULD BE TARKIN . . .AND CUSHING TOO!

IT IS WONDERFULLY TOUCHING to hear and see the name PETER CUSHING on the radio, on television and in newspapers over the last two days.

SPOILERS AHEAD!

ONE NAME THOUGH that we mentioned quite early on during the 'smoke and mirrors' of the months leading up to the Cushing / Tarkin reveal in #ROGUEONE was GUY HENRY. We learn now, it was he who helped to make the magic in bringing, Cushing and Tarkin back to the big screen. The UK television listings magazine, The Radio Times has published a feature on how Tarkin's Ressurection came about and Henry's role in the scenes that has everyone talking . . . . The following are some extracts from the feature :

REASONABLY EARLY ON, Ben Mendelsohn’s new villain Director Orson Krennic is brought to meet his superior officer – Governer Wilhuff "Grand Moff" Tarkin, played in the original 1977 by veteran Hammer horror actor Peter Cushing. Obviously, it makes total sense for Tarkin to be there – the film is set only shortly before the original Star Wars, and he was in charge then – but Cushing passed away in 1994, so you might have expected director Gareth Edwards to recast the role.

BUT THAT'S NOT what Edwards did. Instead, audiences may be surprised to see Cushing once again performing the role, brought back to the screen more than 20 years after his death through a combination of live-action acting, cutting-edge special effects – and an actor from the UK BBC tv series, Holby City.“It was a lot of blood, sweat and tears from [special effects and animation studio] Industrial Light and Magic,” Edwards told Radio Times of Cushing’s return. “John Knoll, whose idea it was to make this film, pitched the idea of doing the opening text of A New Hope as a movie, to Lucasfilm.

“AND HE'S ALWAYS been very aggressive pushing the envelope with what visual effects can do. We were talking about it, and you sort of lay out the movie, and as you start laying it you go ‘you know what, you’ve gotta have these certain characters in there, and I dunno how we’d do it'. “John was always like ‘no we can do this, we can do it, we can do it,’” the director recalled. “He was very confident, and we… you know, to be honest, a lot of people were nervous the whole time, like ‘is this gonna happen?’ And then we went all or nothing in.”So with the effects idea committed to, the team just needed an actor to portray Tarkin’s physical presence before being altered in post-production – and in a surprising development, they looked no further than classic BBC hospital soap opera Holby City.

“IT WAS PLAYED BY an actor called Guy Henry [above], who’s in Holby City, and he was amazing,” Edwards revealed. Rumours of Henry’s involvement have been circulating round Rogue One for some time, as well as the possibility that he could play a younger Grand Moff Tarkin – though no-one predicted that he would be bringing Cushing’s version of the character back so directly.

“IT WAS A MASSIVE THING FOR HIM, it was very gracious of him, because essentially he’s doing this big performance and getting zero credit for it,” Edwards went on.“He was gonna be totally replaced, and then had to keep it all secret. So, um, that was a big ask.”Still, in the end we have to say Henry pulled it off rather well – and without giving too much away, we can say that his Tarkin is not the only original series character to come back with a little movie magic.process for all of that as well.”

'AS FAR AS WE ARE CONCERNED, it’s time, effort and copious special effects money well spent.' - Radio Times December 2016. #ROGUEONE is in cinemas everywhere now.
