#MONSTERMONDAY: SOMEONE IS TAKING MORE THAN PAPER-CLIPS AND BLU TAK FROM THE STATIONARY CUPBOARD!

#MONSTERMONDAY: This really isn't what you would expect upon hanging a door you just bought from #B&Q or #HomeDepot! But then...it was no ordinary store or door. If you are foolish enough to try and cheat Peter Cushing's shop proprietor in Amicus films, #FromBeyondtheGrave...you only have yourself to blame, when beyond said door, the harmless pens and paper-clips are replaced by a mysterious room, with one very angry inhabitant, who wants to steal YOUR WIFE! For those of you who haven't yet had the pleasure of viewing the film, I'll stop there. For those who HAVE? What's your say? Sir Michael Sinclair, harmless cupboard ghost with squatters rights..or MONSTER???

I HAVE BEEN KNOWN at get-togethers when watching this film and this scene in particular, to prattle on endlessly about the quality of the cinematography and lighting in this scene.... quite superb!

IT WASN'T UNTIL quite recently I discovered that the actor playing Sir Michael is in fact, Jack Watson, of Babe fame ! Mainly a UK television-film actor, but a fine one, who has down the years kept my nephews and nieces entertained with his sheep herding trotter! Jack sadly left us in 1999 aged 84.

#GETTTHECUSHIONSUNDAY! THE 1999 RELEASE OF A CAMP CLASSIC! REALLY?

#GETTHECUSHIONSUNDAY! THE BOX SAYS... 'Recently discovered CAMP CLASSIC! UNRELEASED for 25 YEARS!' ..Yeah, there was a reason for that delay 🙂  I wonder how much those critics were paid, or how much they drank before the screening??? ..It's a classic alright 😉 Anyone else have this release? This is one of those rare times where the box and packaging is more exciting and impressive that the contents!

HOW CAN A FILM, that gives us great images like the one above, get it so wrong??? I have said here many times, it almost seems that the budget and imagination needed for the creation of the film, was diverted into the publicity. The press and lobby photographs, were printed on hi quality colour paper, the photographer who took them, knew what he was doing.

THERE ARE SOME EXCELLENT photographs, the press kit was pretty lush-deluxe too! In 1976, I was at a meeting where a short promo reel was screened... it was made up entirely of the 'My grand father was a grave digger' scene. Cushing (MacGregor) was playing his character's grandfather, a young boy, actor Robert Edwards, played Cushing in a wonderfully atmospheric scene. Horse drawn hearse, the black feather plumes, wind howling... 'It took 40 years to bury my grandfather! For a grave digger that is tragic!....' The tragedy is the premise of Cushing playing a retired Horror film actor, holed up in a creepy castle, playing the 'I could really be a vampire' card, was a good idea. The props department even used actual press photographs of Peter from his own films, to add back story evidence of MacGregor's career on the screen.

THIS FILM PROBABLY gets more interest here at PCAS than it rightly deserves, and that is probably because, we don't know WHY Cushing signed on the line.  There have been well documented instances in the past, where Cushing, questioned details in script, The Brides of Dracula and The Mummy for example, I would think he would have almost certainly declined to be involved with a film like this in his earlier years. And, I don't think we can lay the blame at the director shooting extra scenes in PC's absence or an editor putting a spin on the footage. I have never seen a full shooting script for Tender / Tendre Dracula.. but I am pretty sure the scene of PC's dashing out some buttock slapping (!!) to cast member Miou -Miou, was down in black and white, even if it was on a yellow or pink rewrite page !

WE ASKED YOU AT OUR FACEBOOK FAN PAGE  what YOUR opinion and thoughts on the film were. Here are some of your comments from the post at the page:

S. ALEXANDER: 'A venture that Peter would have declined to be involved with in his earlier years. Remember his initial objections and reluctance over 'The Brides of Dracula'? Obvioulsly the finished cut differed from the scripted scenes too.'

R.JOYCE: 'I to  have confess...it's the only Cushing movie I can't sit through. Beautiful box art. But it's a disjointed, pseudo erotic flick. Er, not even that erotic, actually'.

J.PLAYER: 'I watched it there last year...everytime I thought that I couldn't believe I was watching that crap and was ready tonight it down, something would happen that made me want to keep going to see how it would end up!'

R.SMITH: I have a fondness for films like this that are so bad they're not even funny, just jaw dropping exercises in disbelief! Similar to the Bond knock-offs of Lindsay Shonteff (you have to see these to believe their creative ineptitude) I do feel there's a real need to see TENDER DRACULA on Blu-ray someday. The version I have on VHS is pretty shabby.

G.GRANT: I watched this on YouTube a few years ago😱It was really bad. I mean it had novelty value, because Mr Cushing was in it. But just awful

T.TUTTLE: I got 20 minutes into it and had to stop! My pain threshold wasn't high enough to make it!

#MONSTERMONDAY: GUESS WHO AND CUSHING INTERVIEW

#MONSTERMONDAY: AND SO we present this week's #MONSTERMONDAY and our next candidate to fit the bill of 'Is THIS this most terrifying 'Monster / Creature' encountered in his work...' YOU decide 🙂 Below is a GREAT short and sweet interview with Peter about playing #DOCTORWHO. It seems Cushing did enjoy playing Dr Who, though as always and here, he is thinking about what his 'public' wanted to see him appearing in. As Cushing says in his motto, 'We are pleased to serve, and serve to please' in regarding an actors life. Very surprised to also hear his opinion about the Daleks though! It's a short clip and well worth a quick listen! Btw, we have a great little treat for #TOOCOOLTUESDAY tomorrow concerning William Hartnell and Peter Cushing . . .

#TBT SEVEN MYSTERY CUSHING ACTRESSES AND AN ACTOR IN GOGGLES?

#TBT There are SEVERAL young actresses in these two rare photographs, and all but one of them have appeared in films starring Peter Cushing, can you name these actresses? ALSO who is that actor, in the wet suit and googles??? ANSWERS later....

ALSO MAYBE YOU MISSED the announcement of WEDNESDAY'S now being a REQUEST-A-GIF DAY at our FACEBOOK FAN PAGE ACCOUNT  and here at the website. Well here is the first of our #GIMMETHEGIF requests, this one for our friend Catherine Anne…..'Dracula / Horror Of Dracula' (1958) Van Helsing (Peter Cushing) leaps and runs down the table, to pull down the curtains and expose the sunlight of DEATH! EXCELLENT choice, Catherine!

#TBT WAXING ON LOVE AND LOSS IN 1970

#‎TBT‬ ON REFLECTION it's a miracle that Peter Cushing appeared in 'The House That Dripped Blood' at all! Shooting began at Shepperton studio in the Summer of 1970. At the time, Peter's late wife Helen, was very ill and unusual for Cushing he asked to be released from his contract or if consideration could be given to the amount of time he would spend on set. The producers would not agree to this, so Cushing had to leave the shoot each day and speed back to his home in Whitstable, and then return early the following morning, bright and fresh ready to work.

DESPITE THESE PRESSURES, Cushing performance as actor Philip Grayson, is a interesting one. Playing a peg in a love triangle, with a wax figure...some of the shots in the film of Cushing walking lonely along river banks and streets, you can't help wondering what was really on his mind, as these were some of the last days he would spend with Helen... at her bedside or not.... #throwbackthursday

HAPPY BIRTHDAY! HELP US CELEBRATE AND REMEMBER PETER CUSHING

Peter Wilton Cushing was born on the morning of MONDAY 26th May 1913, at 'Ormandy', Godstone Road, Kenley, Surrey, UK...to father George Edward Cushing and mother, Nellie Maria Cushing. Peter's father was a quantity surveyor and Nellie was the daughter of a carpet merchant.

Little Peter had an elder brother, David, three years his senior. It appears that mother Nellie had her heart set on having a girl. 'Wanting 'one of each' she had mitigated any disappointment in my arrival by dressing me in girls frocks!', Cushing recalled..'allowing my hair to grow in long curls, tied with a pink ribbon. Eventually, 'father exerted his gentle authority' ... and Peter was more appropriately attired! .....All of that, began so long ago.
