HOT TOYS DOOKU MODEL AND THE TWO SIDES OF CHRISTOPHER LEE

TWO SIDES CHRISTOPHER LEE. Here are two very interesting photographs, I thought you would like to see and share here today maybe? One is a publicity still taken by the stills photographer during the making of Hammer films, 'Dracula Has Risen From The Grave' at Pinewood Studios, sometime between April 22nd 1968 and June 4th 1968. It's a rarely seen pic, on set of the roof tops, with nice peeps from the studio lighting! You know how I LOVE seeing the lamps and lighting in stills πŸ˜ƒ It's blazing RED for sure! The second is a mysterious and very different photograph of Lee by Tom How with artwork by Connie Jones and copyrighted to Constantina. What do you make of this? I guess everyone will have their own thoughts and take on the subject matter and the artwork . . and I would LOVE to hear it, so please JOIN US over at THE FACEBOOK PCAS FACEBOOK FAN PAGE! πŸ˜ƒ Please feel free to comment and share! πŸ˜‰Marcus

HANDS AND ARMS UP FOR DRACULA RITES PLUS ANTHONY HINDS REMEMBERED TODAY

WHEN THE JOB first came in, for artist Tom Chantrell for the Hammer film, 'The Satanic Rites of Dracula' he was probably, as in the case with most of Hammer's... 'design a cinema poster to show the money men first' tried and tested plans.... given the most basic outline plot details of the film. He knew, as well as Dracula, Christopher Lee, Peter Cushing and girls... a black magic type of ritual was also on the cards;) So, he started designing, as he had done with so many of the Hammer Dracula's cinema posters before, using his camera, and snapped a few shots of himself, in dramatic poses. These would act as visual references, for the pose he had in mind for Dracula on the poster. As there was a rooster / cockerel sacrifice mentioned in the opening moments of the film plot notes, THIS gave him an idea! What better, than an amazing central illustration of Dracula, with a blood dripping dagger...and slain cockerel?! Bird in one hand and dagger in the other, both held up high in a nightmare offering?

ALL WENT WELL, until the quite impressive finished art work was presented to Hammer films! Sadly, even as amazing as it looked, it was deemed visually, a little too harsh, and it's hints of voodoo and demonic going on's, may caused problems with censorship, especially when the poster was pinned to the billboards and foyers of the local Odeon, next to a poster of 'The Artistocats' or 'Digby The Biggest Dog In The World'...! So, Tom was told to take the dagger and the cockerel off.

AND THAT is why, we have an empty hands, arms held high, vision of the Prince of Darkness, in the UK cinema quad poster! It's interesting to see that Warner have opted for the Japanese cut and paste style cinema poster, when the film was released and distributed on DVD. Chantrell was an amazing artist, and designed many of the posters and trade art for some Peter Cushing's best films . .. including one called, Star Wars. . . .

TODAY, the nineteenth of September we remember the late ANTHONY HINDS, today he would have been his 97th birthday. For many Hammer film fans, Hinds represents the 'GOLDEN YEARS' of the studios output and production. Producer and script writer, he was responsible for some of Peter Cushing's most revered work in the fantasy genre. When asked about Peter and his workinng relationship, with one of Hammer films leading actors, Hinds shared, even though Cushing could be quite exacting, 'A fuss pot'.. every detail that he paid such close attention too, always paid off. The process of film making and shooting in studio or on location, is an expensive business, but Peter would not be happy for the camera to start rolling, until everything was just right. Hinds, has a good point, it is that focus, no matter how frustrating, that helped both he and Cushing present such wonderful films and tv drama's that are still popular today . .

MORE ON ANTHONY HINDS CAREER IN OUR PCASUK FEATURE HERE!

IN HAMMER'S EARLY YEARS, it was Hinds idea to hire country houses and to based the production and shooting in the rooms and grounds of the locations, which saved the the studio huge production costs. His script writing skills, have been picked over by many, but few could doubt his skill in managing tight budgets, and building impressive productions, with very limited resources and finance...and for this, he was indeed, the 'Master Builder and Architect of Hammer films'...and for that, we are very grateful.....

WHEN VINCENT PRICE SURPRISED CHRISTOPHER LEE, LEE SURPRISED CUSHING AND CUSHING SURPRISED LEE!

#HAMMERFILMSATURDAY: NOT A POST ON A HAMMER FILM as such, but certainly the emphasis is on shock and surprise! All three actors in this feature, relied on the power of surprise and of the unexpected, those golden rules were also the glue that held a television show like, 'THIS IS YOUR LIFE' together, and made it such a thrill to watch. The big question, after the initial netting of the programmes 'victim', was who was going to walk through the door and appear in the studio next?

THERE CAN'T BE MANY who have never seen the show, which was originally screened in the USA and  hosted by its creator and producer, Ralph Edwards. Christopher Lee was chosen as the shows subject on 3rd April 1974. At 51 years old, Lee still had a very long way to go and several major career defining roles at this point in his long life. The guests included  his wife, Gitte, daughter Christina, his mother, sister, brother, and fellow actors Peter Cushing, Vincent Price, Patrick Macnee, and Sammy Davis Jr. Lee who sometimes could be a little stiff and guarded in personal appearances on tv, looked relaxed and having a good time, thankfully a position that we would eventually see him adopt more often, as he got older.

BECAUSE OF WORK commitments, Christopher Lee was unable to attend Peter Cushing's 'The Is Your Life' tribute show in 1990. But he did record a message for his friend, whic was played to Cushing, during the recording of the show.

THE 'NO-SHOW' at the studio, for Peter's programme, surprised a few people. Often the show had a habit of showing a recording of a guest who could be there, for whatever reason.. and then bringing the same guest on from around the back...they were there all the time! But, sadly not in this case. The show was a great success, with much laughter from Peter, who waqs obviously enjoying himself. Maybe, a Cushing This Is Your Life should have happened sooner? Peter looked frail, many  guests who could have contributed much to the story of Peter's life, had long passed. Having said that, Joyce Broughton, in several interviews, always made the point of, Cushing telling her, 'If that show gets in touch, tell them no. Under no circumstances, no!' It''s worth noting that, Cushing DID know about the  planned recording weeks before, when he became so suspicious of Joyce's behavior, she had to tell him. If that was a good thing or not, you decide...

RALPH EDWARDS APPROACHES, Price in a bookstore and says, 'It's good to see you are autographing a copy of your own book, 'A Treasury of American Art' ..and at no point does Vincent suspect anything is a-miss. 'Yes, that's right.' says Price, 'It's a wonderful book!' 'Well..' says Edwards, 'I have another book, with your name on it, right on the front cover!'....and at that point, starts to pull out, the BIG book from a plastic carrier bag. 'I REALLY don't believe it!' howls Price. And, another one heads off to '...a studio, just a few blocks away' to meet his family and friends, before the cameras. Price has a wonderful time, and his genuine warmth and love for the guests who appear, is plain to see.

#HAMMERSATURDAY: CLOSE TO YOU. BUT NOT TOO CLOSE....

#HAMMERSATURDAY: ASK the academics, and they'll say, 'It's Art!' Ask the fan, and they'll say, 'It's Lee trying out, something different!'..... Me? I am not sure. I was with it until the line... 'That is why, all the boys in town, follow you, all around!' ... 'They long to be, close to you!' I am sure this wasn't what Burt Bacharach and Hal David had in mind, when they penned this love song ditty... or maybe they did???

CATCH UP WITH POSTS FROM OUR FACEBOOK FAN PAGE

ON LAST FRIDAY'S #FRANKENSTEINFRIDAY we had a 'Monster From Hell' theme and shared this gif of Baron Frankenstien (Peter Cushing) examining a new set of eyes from Hammer's Frankenstein And The Monster From Hell (1974) This shot of Peter looking through a magnifying glass has been used in many of his films and was even spoofed in Top Secret (1984)

WE FOLLOWED ON with another gif featuring the Baron going to any lengths for his work in this well known and quite gruesome scene from Hammer's Frankenstein And The Monster From Hell (1974) This scene was censored during the films original release, recently restored for the blu-ray.

OUR FINAL GIF from Frankenstein And The Monster From Hell (1974)… featured the touching moment between Sarah (Madeline Smith) and The Monster (Dave Prowse) before he is destroyed by the inmates of the asylum. Again, this is another of the restored shots that were included in the blu ray release, that had been removed from the US theatrical release of the film back in 1974.

OUR NEW #HAMMERFILMSSATURDAY brought us some interesting posts and comments too! This often requested contact print photograph of Peter Cushing and Christopher Lee (below) meeting the press during the making of THE SATANIC RITES OF DRACULA Hammer films.

SUNDAY'S #GETTHECUSHINGITSCUSHING we also marked the passing of John Carradine, who we sadly lost on this day in 1988. A highly prolific actor who career covered nearly all genres of film from horror to dramas to westerns. He co starred with Peter Cushing in Shockwaves (1977) and House of the Long Shadows (1983)

#GETTHECUSHIONITSCUSHING:This week, our Cushing Clip was a big fav among 'Cushing-Van-Helsing-Fans'.During its final years Hammer was trying different experiments with films in an attempt to find new angles on old stories, one of them was their final vampire film The Legend Of The Seven Golden Vampires (1974) a co-production with the Shaw Brothers, was a hybrid of the Kung-Fu and Horror.Christopher Lee did not return as Dracula and instated was played by John Forbes Robinson. However Peter Cushing once again returned as Van Helsing and really gets involved in the action of the film. While the film was not a success at the time, it reputation has grown over the years as it features plenty of memorable scenes including this one, the final battle with The Seven Golden Vampires. What are some of your favourite moments from the film?

#GETTHECUSHIONITSCUSHING: Van Helsing (Peter Cushing) to the rescue as he stakes the final golden vampire from Hammer's 'The Legend Of The Seven Golden Vampires' (1974)

ON MONDAY we remembered the life and career of actor ANDRE MORELL and his passing in 1978.Today we remember Andre Morell, who we sadly lost on this day in 1978. A celebrated actor whose career had more than a few teamings with Peter Cushing and the fantasy genre. In 1938, Morell joined the Old Vic theatre company, and appeared in several of their high-profile productions both at their home theatre and on tour throughout Britain and across the rest of the world, appearing with both Alec Guinness and John Gielgud.'

HE KICK STARTED his association with 'creepy cinema' with Cushing as Sherlock Holmes, and playing Arthur Conan Doyle's character Doctor John H. Watson, in Hammer Film Productions' version of The Hound of the Baskervilles (1959). In 1960. He played Captain Edward Manningham in 'Cone of Silence' in 1960 also starring Cushing, Michael Craig and Bernard Lee. His wonderful portrayal as the 'bounder' Colonel Gore-Hepburn in Hammer's 'Cash on Demand' in 1961 makes very entertaining viewing, as he piles the pressure on Cushing's tormented bank manger, Harry Fordyce and 65 as Haumeid in Hammer's 'She'..with rather odd dubbing.

THERE WERE OTHER VERY GOOD HORRORS and thrillers too, Hammer's 'Plague of the Zombies' in 66 and the rather limp 'The Mummy's Shroud' again for Hammer in 1967, along with Michael Ripper's Longbarrow, one of the few times where supporting actors are more interesting then the central 'monster'. But, his stand out performance with Cushing, for me has to be in the BBC live televised production of George Orwell's '1984', as the chillingly good O'Brien. It's interesting that Morell played a very good Prof Quatermass in the BBC Quatermass tv series (1958-59) but when offered the role of the Prof in Hammer's 'Quatermass and the Pit' in 1967, turned it down.

MORELL ALWAYS LOOKED very at home in Hammer's early horrors, but inside personally felt a little more than embarrassed by the subject matter of some of the films, and often forbid his family to actually see them at the local cinema. By all accounts, a rather private man, but very generous on screen and made an outstanding contribution to some of Hammer and Cushing's best work.

FINALLY AS IT WAS ALSO #MONSTERMONDAY yesterday, Christopher Lee got the #MONSTERMONDAY treatment: Today our candidate for Monster Monday is Franklyn Marsh a snobbish art critic played by Christopher Lee from Amicus's Dr Terror's House Of Horrors (1965)

PAINTER ERIC LANDOR (Michael Gough) bears the brunt of one of Marsh's tirades, but gets even by humiliating the critic publicly, but when he takes it to far, Marsh gets revenge by running over Landor, casing him to lose his hand, unable to paint again he commits suicide.

NOW THE QUESTION IS, Franklyn a true monster or just someone who got caught up in a situation that got out of control? You Decide  . . .
