REMEMBERING CARRIE FISHER ONE YEAR ON . . .

IT STILL SEEMS quite surreal writing this, one year on. A year today we lost CARRIE FISHER. The shock rippled around the world, and I am sure today, many will again feel that disbelief. Many here of course will know her connection to Peter Cushing, through the movie, STAR WARS. As Tarkin, they together played a key scene, with Peter cranking up his performance, as the cruel and most Machiavellian of characters in the Star Wars universe. Carrie later shared how difficult it had been for her to find the motivation, to hate Peter's Tarkin. She too, like many before her, had been charmed and moved, by his kindness and manner on set, it was quite a task to actually say those lines.

WHILE CREATING the banner for today's post, I dug though many hundreds of images of Carrie in file. They were ALL magical. They ALL projected her sense of fun, wickedness and love of life. Many were taken long before she started that painful and disabling struggle, that tripped and distracted her later in life. There were so many photographs, picking one, was just too difficult, picking TWO, was really no easier. Just like the fact she is no longer here, it's just not good enough . . . She really stands as one of the brightest STARS, not just in that Star Wars Galaxy, but in the lives of so many that she continues to touch. And today, we remember CARRIE FISHER, as one very special star, who still shines . . . .

#CHRISTOPHERLEESATURDAY! FRIGHTENINGLY MUCH MORE THAN A FALL GUY . . GIFS

#CHRISTOPHERLEESATURDAY! FALLING DEADLY! Under the heading of The Many Deaths of Christopher Lee In The Movies, should be a sub-heading . . . 'Falling and Falls' Can you name and count how many times one of Christopher Lee's Bad Guys or Monsters, FELL while dying??? Here's My favorite from 'Dracula Has Risen From The Grave' Hammer 1968 . . .

IT'S AMAZING when you stop and examine how many death's Christopher Lee's DRACULA experienced that also featured FALLING...! You would have thought after his giant 'Whoops-a-Daisy'  in '#DRACULA HAS RISEN FROM THE GRAVE' in 1968, in his next adventure in 1969, 'TASTE THE BLOOD OF DRACULA', he'd be watching his step... nope. That Church balcony was pretty high too. That's gorra hurt . . . all hail to the stuntman, the late Eddie Powell.

COME 1970 and 'THE SCARS OF DRACULA', he goes and falls head first, from the parapet of castle  DRACULA ...ON FIRE! In 1972 he still proved to be not that steady on his pins, when Van Helsing tricked him, in a pit of wooden stakes, in DRACULA AD 1972.

BACK IN 1966 Lee's Rasputin, fell  to his death, from a three story castle window, on to an ice covered moat, that  only three months earlier, he had slipped and slithered through, a ice hole to a watery death as DRACULA again, in DRACULA, PRINCE OF DARKNESS . . .

FLAMES AND A STAIRCASE, provided the 'out', when Lee played in an adaption of Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde, cunningly renamed 'Dr Marlow and Mr Blake' in Amicus films, 'I MONSTER'. When this film made its debut in 1970, audiences must have thought that the guys pushing the pens, got some weird pleasure seeing a 6ft' 5 guy hitting the deck...!

FULL MARKS must be awarded to scriptwriter Michael Armstrong, who I am sure realised this too. When it came to writing 'HOUSE OF THE LONG SHADOWS', the only film to star Lee, Peter Cushing and Vincent Price in scenes together, Armstrong was careful to litter the story with skip loads of visual references to the three 'Masters of Terror's' long careers. So when it came to offing Christopher Lee, you can take a guess at how his exit was dispatched. Armstrong decided that only a double nod would suffice . . . the falling down the stairs from 'I, MONSTER' and poleaxing and Shish kebab from 'DRACULA HAS RISEN FROM THE GRAVE'... even down to the shocked expression on realizing he was impaled, was a nice touch.

AND FINALLY, perhaps the longest fall, was kept until last, with Christopher Lee's Saruman the White, from 'Lord Of The Rings : The Return Of The King' (2003), unfortunately cut from the theatrical version .  . . . but thankfully they can be seen in the extended version of the film, available on the blu ray release.

#GETHECUSHIONSUNDAY! WHO IS THAT?????

#GETHECUSHIONSUNDAY! WELL...there's a shocker! Actress Jodie Whittaker has been named as the latest regeneration of DOCTOR WHO! Ok.... What do you think????

MY TWO-PENCE WORTH: ...for what it is worth.....THE WONDER FACTOR: The 'Wonder Woman' movie this year made a lot of the studios sit up and think, it was a big surprise that it was so popular and made so much at the box office. Doctor Who is no longer a nice little tv show made in the UK for just 'the fans'...it's a show with an international audience, that sells overseas. The BBC and their programmes even though financed by the license fee, MUST make a profit, and move the tastes and predicted and unpredictable favor of the viewing public, both in UK, Europe and further afield. This casting is in line, with all of those things, despite what fans, supporters, long time viewers may think, it's a business... - Marcus

IT'S NOT JUST THE EYES THAT FOLLOW YOU AROUND THE ROOM!

WITH THE EXCEPTION of dear old Arthur Grimsdyke in 'Tales from the Crypt' Peter Cushing never did get to play a physical grotesque. Amazing when you consider that wonderful facial bone structure. A make up artist's dream! If ever you find yourself at The Prater in Vienna, and your heart can take it, you must go and seek out this animated digital 'painting' of Peter Cushing's likeness for yourself! Spooky? What do you think?

MORE SILENT BUT DEADLY GIFS FROM THE 70'S CUSHING ERA

#GIMMETHEGIFWEDNESDAY: THREE GREAT GIFS for you again this week. Requested by Roy Tremont, Trace Badden and Mitch Tarlin, great choices from the 70's when Peter Cushing appeared in over TWENTY horror films!

AT THE TOP David Warner comes face to face with his personal phantom, a demanding specter, who resides in a mirror and has the appetite for blood, on a grand scale. From Beyond the Grave, stands out has one of the better portmanteau films that Cushing appeared in for Amicus films. There is the usual top cast and performances, with tight and terrifying script that has no fat, but plenty of meat and . . blood!

DREAMS SEEM TO PLAY a large and active part in the fantasy genre film of Peter Cushing. If the Bard's question of 'What Dreams May come..?' is the question, the answer is 'many and in the shape of horrific nightmares! This dream-sequence from another Amicus offering, features in the 1971, 'The house That Dripped Blood'. Cushing's obsession for the female lead, drives him to the point of madness. Which is pretty impressive, considering she, never speaks, goes no where, is made of wax and lives in a wax museum!

SHOCK WAVES is one of those films from Cushing's career that has since it's release in 1977, risen from obscure low budget quicky, to a cult classic, that now sits in today's extremely profitable and prolific ZOMBIE genre. The idea of zombie German troops is a good one and from it's release, Shock Waves, lead the way rebounding off  'Night of the Living Dead' and presented us with an interesting and imaginative twist that up until then, was ruled by Hammer films, 'Plague of the Zombies', White Zombie' and a few Universal and RKO titles.

Cushing as the reclusive and sinister SCAR, lends a lot of weight to what could have been, a film of just scary moments, and the ol 'monsters chase, monsters kill, monsters die' plot. The images of the undead troop appearing out of the sea and coming on land to twist, kill and murder the unsuspecting, is potent stuff. Cushing sadly has little time on screen, but what there is, he makes the best of, and along with co star John Carradine, serves up a flick that has, because of it's almost gorilla-film-making-production-values, a rough and raw energy, far removed from the polished horrors, that keeps us on edge, as we never quite know what is going to come next...!

#ONSETSATURDAY: NEW CANDID CUSHING AND LEE CHAT : BLANKETS FOR VAMPIRES AND DRAC'S ON ICE!

#ONSETSATURDAY : LAST MEETING: Here's a NEW CLIP from our 'The Last Meeting' footage of Peter Cushing and Christopher Lee meeting for the last time in 1994. This is a clip is a cracker, were Peter asks Christopher Lee to tell him some of his favourite anecdotes. Lee of course obliges with impressions too! So, here for the last time, Peter giggles at the stories of actor Sir Ralph Richardson, Sir John Gielgud ,Sir Noël Coward...and Chuck Connors!!!! Enjoy. More clips HERE at our PCAS YOU TUBE channel!

#onsetsaturday : Here is quite a commonly seen behind the scenes still from Hammer's 1958 Dracula, but no one ever seems to notice that the 'un-credited actress' playing Valerie Gaunt's aged vampire, is in fact snuggled up all toasty-like with a blanket around her LEGS! The stories of Bray studio's stages being like a arctic winter are well known, the elderly lady was obviously feeling the chill...despite vampires..already being DEAD!

When we interviewed Michael Gough in the early 1990's he remembered the actress quite well shooting her scene, and that she was also shocked and a little upset when she arrived at the studio that morning, having been told, the job was 'no lines playing a sleeping grand-mother'! She wasn't happy at all! But after a comforting cup of tea, decided to carry on...... Hammer were obviously spoiling her..blanket, cups of tea...

#ONSETSATURDAY : STILL ON THE DRACULA THREAD, but minus Peter Cushing and his Van Helsing, here is a rare on set colour transparency shot from Hammer's 'DRACULA HAS RISEN FROM THE GRAVE', with actor Ewan Hopper as a 'faith-faltering' Priest, about to resurrect, the 'Lord of the Undead', Dracula who lies just under the ice! One trickle of blood from the holy father's head, is all it's going to take!
