NEWS: DRACULA RESSURECTED AND LOOKING AMAZING ON WARNER BROTHERS REMASTERED BLU RAY

NEWS: TOMORROW IT ARRIVES! WARNER BROTHERS REMASTEDED BLU RAY RELEASE of Hammer films DRACULA AD 1972 is available FROM TOMORROW 16TH OCTOBER on AMAZON. If you are one of the few followers of Peter Cushing;s work or a fab of Hammer films and have never had the chance to see this film, and know little, brace yourself for opinions and reviews about the filma dnthis release, that will run the whole gumit from A to Z. Hammer Dracula fans tend to dislike like everything about it, while those of us, who maybe grew up in the 1970's see this as a nostalgic connection, to world and era that is usally based in the 18 or 19 hundreds! ASs a teenager in the 70's, I too wasn't a fan of the film. But then, I grew up and could then appreciate the humour and subtiies of the plot and the style of teh film. Now, it's one of my all time favs of Hammer films and the fantasy output of Cushing's and Lee's careers. For those who sadly wrestle and still have sleepless nights and can't recover or relate to the end title shot in DRACULA HAS RISEN FROM THE GRAVE, (Why is that castle blaconey so FAR WAY from the brass cross that Dracula fell onto? Why oh why oh why???) the REMASTERING and fine presentation, of this Warner Brothers Archive Collection release will offer little. But for those of us who love the film, EVERYTHING is there, and wonderfully prestine and sharp!

DESPITE WHAT MAYBE THOUGHT ABOUT THE STORY CONTENT of this 1972 release, you ceratinly can't criticise the REMASTERING. If you too loved and appreciated the quality of the 'Warner Brothers Hammer Horror Classics Collection', RESTORED FIVE Hammer film BLU RAY BOX SET two years ago, then you are in for a treat. DRACULA AD 1972 was previously released on a German Blu-Ray, this was based on the same transfer created for the 2005 DVD release for multiple regions. Word has it that, The Warner Archive Collection reviewed that particular transfer and rejected it as . . . unusable.

THIS WARNER ARCHIVE COLLECTION 1080p, AVC-encoded Blu-ray, has been made from a NEW 2K scan by Warner's MPI facility of a recently manufactured interpositive. Color correction was performed using Ektrachrome transparencies, and thousands of instances of dirt, scratches and age-related damage were REPAIRED BY HAND, frame by frame. There are sadly no extras except for DRACULA AD 1972 trailer on this release, but for those of us who have waited a long time for this particular film  . . AND The Satanic Rites of Dracula, to be released soon.. to be remastered and presented on Blu Ray, visuals and audio are an amazing bonus in themselves.

THE LONG AND SHORT OF WAITING FOR AD 72 AND SATANIC PLUS GIFS FROM AMICUS HAMMER AND KNOX

WE JABBER on and on about these two Peter Cushing / Christopher Lee Hammer films . . . just type the titles into google images, and you'll discover a virtual digital archive, masses of our posts from the last six years! Why? Well, despite both of these late Hammer films, being out of favor and fashion for the best part of 40 odd years . . . I have a great fondness for the idea of Van Helsing and Dracula locked into a modern day dramatic ding dong, on my doorstep... rather than, some Gothic castle , in fictional Olde Worlde Karlsbad? Even though it's chosen location of London, is long gone, along with the loon and flapping flared denims and bat winged shirt collars . . . that era too, is now something locked into the past. Both would make an excellent package for Cushing, Lee and Hammer fans alike.

Our Feature and behind the scenes gallery on
The Satanic Rites of Dracula can be found : HERE!

YOU WANT EXTRAS??? There is a MASS of material available... even if the likes of the cheapest cheapskates of distributors, there are several cast members who are still breathing, for use in those, oh so lazy talking head interviews. The bottom line for any distributor, even the cheapest is, will it SELL? Warner Brothers proved a point, last year when they released probably the smartest looking Hammer film box set ever! . . . .Clean, remastered, region free, Hammer films starring their two biggest stars SELL...even without extra features. The Warner box set, set a standard and fans purchased the lot! So how about it? . . . Would you BUY??

#SILENTBUTDEADLYWEDNESDAY: Herbert Lom in Amicus films, ASYLUM (1972) as Dr. Byron in the story "Mannikins of Horror" . .. it's a neat story, and the 'mini Lom' was a nice touch too. Cushing's story 'The Weird Tailor', was based on a Robert Bloch's story from Karloff's 'Thriller' TV series (1961) . . . these are probably the strongest stories of the bunch maybe? Not counting Cushing's 'Poetic Justice' in 'Tales from the Crypt' . .. of all the portmanteau stories in the Amicus films...do you have TWO FAVORITES??? Tell us why

#SILENTBUTDEADLYWEDNESDAY!: I LOVE THIS SHOT from DRACULA AD 1972 . . . not unlike the 1934 Lon Chaney Jr Universal film, 'SON OF DRACULA', where Dracula turning up under a 'non de plume' as something so ridiculously obvious as ALUCARD, hits every member of the cinema audience  . . . but no one ON the screen. Here our learned Professor, burning the night oil pours over this  anagram . . .and BANG, the LIGHT BULB moment! Cushing just about manages to carry this one off, thanks to that chilling look into the eyes of his ancestor . . .Well, come on. It would have been a very short film, had Van Helsing cottoned-on in the first reel . . .

#SILENTBUTDEADLYWEDNESDAY! . . .AND FINALLY, a request from PAM D.D of this knock out shot from Cushing's performance ad Dr Robert Knox in 'FLESH AND THE FIENDS' (1960). A little girl in the street begs alms from Dr. Knox (Peter Cushing). tells her that he doesn't have any money with him, but if she will step over to his house he will give her some. The little girl politely declines the offer, saying, "Oh, no, you might be Dr. Knox." The unspoken response is a wonderful of example of Peter Cushing's acting skill saying so much with just a look, no words needed.

FOUND AT OUR WEBSITE: HERE!

A FILM WITH A STELLAR cast with actors Donald Pleasence & George Rose as Buke and Hare, Billie Whitelaw & Hammer regular George Woodbridge. As per our last post, this is another film crying out of a blu-ray release as it considered by many to be the one of the finest films made about Dr. Robert Knox.

#ONTHESETSATURDAY: TAKING A BREAK IN VAN HELSING'S STUDY : THE SATANIC RITES OF DRACULA

#ONSETSETSATURDAY :Large colour rare transparency: Peter Cushing and Joanna Lumley and crew on the set during takes of #hammerfilms 'The Satanic Rites of Dracula' (1974) The last time Christopher Lee would appear as Hammer films Count.

Max Rosenberg, one half of Amicus films who throughout the 1960's and most of the 70's, would be the company's main competition would ironically gain U.S theatrical licensing control of this film, under his company Dynamite. When the company ceased trading, the film slipped out of copyright and can now be found on many 'unlicensed and underground' releases and dvd compilations under the chronic title, 'Count Dracula and his Vampire Bride'. Be warned: Most of these releases are duped from a single VHS recording, and transferred onto dvd.

HORROR EXPRESS COMPOSER JOHN CACAVAS DIES 83

Sad to hear of the passing of composer John Cacavas. Famous here for his haunting theme to Spanish horror film, 'HORROR EXPRESS' and Hammer Films 'THE SATANIC RITES OF DRACULA' both starring Peter Cushing and Christopher Lee... Cacavas worked prolifically with some of the best known US tv shows, including 'Kojak'... I'd easily peg his 'Satanic Rites' theme in my top five Hammer themes, for sure. Cacavas was 83 and had been ill for some time.
