#HAMMERFILMSATURDAY: CUSHING LANDAU AND ERNEST THESIGER : THE MISSING LINK!

#HAMMERFILMSATURDAY: Here is a great behind the scenes photograph of Peter Cushing having his gold make-up fixed while shooting the #SPACE1999 episode, 'Missing Link'. St of the series, Martin Landau looks on. Why not try our TRIVIA QUESTION? Who would have thought there was a link between Landau, Ernest Thesiger and Peter Cushing?

TOOCOOLTUESDAY: THE DRESSING ROOMS OF PETER CUSHING

'Rider is a set of requests or demands that a performer sets as criteria for performance. Types of riders include hospitality and technical...'

#TOOCOOLTUESDAY : In these times of OTT indulgence, actions and re-actions... the performer and diva stands where they have always been. Wherever they want and with whatever they want. Not this sense of entitlement and behavior is anything new, they were stamping their feet and throwing out teddy in the world of entertainment back in Peter Cushing's day too. (Joan Collins in Hammer films 'Fear In The Night' co starring Peter Cushing...anyone??) The dressing room for many, is the domain of the star. Where he or she waits for the call, but more importantly where they will meet and often greet visitors to studio or the theater. So, like being judged by the position and quality of your seating, stand, balcony or Royal Box at they show, their level of influence, power and tantrum potential is measured by the level of tolerance and cringe worthy towing -the line and forelock tugging!

There are dressing rooms, and there are DRESSING ROOMS. Who could ever forget this rider :   Crystal champagne. One box of bendy straws. One special attendant to dispose of used chewing gum. Tea service for eight. A Honey Bear pack of honey. Two air purifiers. Puppy. Kittens. For Peter Cushing, his dressing room, once a place of singing, japes and fun, was in the last third of his career, something else....

THE BARD AND PETER CUSHING: MARKING 400 YEAR ANNIVERSARY

It's 400 years ago today, that as Shakespeare, ' shufflel'd off this mortall coile...!' an often quoted line from his 1602 crowd puller, 'Hamlet'. And it's his drama, Hamlet that also provides our Cushing Connection! As many of you may know, Peter Cushing to great success, played Osric in the 1948 Olivier film production, see pic above!. Cushing was no stranger to Shakespeare, having tackled many a role while touring with the Olivier company and in several productions during the 1930's and 40's.

In fact, had not fate intervened, playing several of Shakespeare's characters in a production entitled 'Heritage of Horror' would probably have been his swan-song. Unfortunately, it was a real 'Shakespearian tragedy' that Tyburn and Kevin Francis, could not secure the funding. Peter even grew a beard in preparation for the role, and maintained it until his final day... just as in Shakespeare's time, today some 400 years on, financing drama is in the hands of... '...cream faced loons..' Tis a pity. Rest easy Will . . .

Peter and Helen Cushing, Sir Laurence Olivier and Vivien Leigh arrive at Freemantle, Australia with the Old Vic Theatre Company....during their tour of Australia and New Zealand in 1948.... they performed Shakespeare's Richard III and Sheridan's 'School for Scandal'.... (A: Helen Cushing B: Peter Cushing C: Laurence Olivier.

THE HEIRESS PETER CUSHING : ''HAPPIEST DAYS'

Peter Cushing as Dr Austin Sloper in the stage play, 'The Heiress' and some pages from his personal script. As always written annotations, pointers and notes here about personal props, costume..some of the items were belonged Peter Cushing himself.

During it's run at the Horseshoe Theatre, Basingstoke from 21st October until November 1st 1975, The Heiress played to full houses. Cushing stated at the time that the few weeks he had spent with the production were the happiest he had experience since Helen's passing in 1971.

Helen Ryan who also starred in the production remembers, 'Peter was wonderful, super in the play, but he was so terribly nervous. The play opened at 7.30pm and Peter would be at the theatre three hours beforehand to check his props and costume!' Before this engagement, Cushing had often stated that his 'legitimate theatre' days, were well behind him...
