SUZAN FARMER 1942 - 2017

#CHRISTOPHERLEESATURDAY! : News is just coming through that that actress SUZAN FARMER has died. This is sad to hear. Farmer has special place in lots of Hammer films fans hearts, BBC Sci Fi lovers too... She appeared quite a few features with Christopher Lee..in Devil Ship Pirates with Christopher Lee and was outstanding in Dracula, Prince of Darkness . . . her shock reaction to seeing the count in the room, when she thought she was safe in the monastery...was memorable.

A talented actress and certainly gifted . . with appearances in Blake's Seven, Dracula Prince of Darkness, UFO, The Persuaders, Rasputin, the Mad Monk . . . she has a not too shoddy a body of work. Do you have a favorite role of Suzan's??

ACTRESS VALERIE GAUNT DIES AGED 84

VALERIE GAUNT: Terribly sad to hear that actress VALERIE GAUNT (Reddington Valerie) has passed away, aged 84 after a short illness.

VALERIE'S short career on the big screen featured only in two films, and they were along side Peter Cushing. Just two roles, but they left a lasting impact, that would outlast many longer career! Her playing of Justine in 'The Curse of Frankenstein' (1957) and her performance in Hammer films,1958 'Dracula' hold a special place for lovers of fantasy cinema. Born Valerie Shelia Gaunt, on the 9th July 1932 in Stratford-on-Avon, Warwickshire, England, following an interest in amateur theater, after leaving school embarked on a career as a model, before auditioning for Hammer and landing her first professional role in 1957. Gaunt married her husband Gerald Alfred Reddington on May 17th,1958.

Valerie will be buried today (November 30th ) following a service at St Helen's, Seaview, Isle of Wight, She is survived by her husband, Gerald and their four children.

GUESS THE FILM AND THE ACTRESSES : ON SET SATURDAY

#ONTHESETSATURDAY: We have a couple of choice behind the scenes and on set photographs and rare colour transparencies for you this week. A little different this time around, I would like you to tell US which film these great snaps come from, and of course the only thing they really have in common, is they are all from Peter Cushing films. HAVE FUN!

TO FINISH OFF...This is one of my all-time personal favourite 'behind the scenes' photographs from a Peter Cushing film! It's wonderfully busy, a real slice of life from the set of Hammer film at lovely ol Bray studios... Peter Cushing compares notes and script with director Terence Fisher, while an assistant to wardrobe mistress Rosemary Burrows, quickly fixes a stitch or seam on the belt of Cushing's waist coat, while actor Thorley Walters stops and pauses to rethink that line of dialogue... actress Susan Denberg wanders by, playing with her bonnet!.... absolutely charming!

THIS YEAR, 2016 marks the 60th anniversary of PCAS, help us celebrate Peter Cushing life and career, by sharing our post on any of our sites.

GOODNESS ME! DOCTOR WHO ASSISTANT IS A CORKER!

FOLLOWING REQUESTS after our full colour glamour shot of Jill Curzon with DALEK yesterday...here are some more! Curzon co starred with Bernard Cribbins in the 1966 film Daleks Invasion Earth 2150 AD...sequel to the first Dr Who film also starring Peter Cushing, Dr Who and the Daleks in 1965. Curzon posed for several sessions of publicity photographs in order to promote the film, these pics appeared in the daily newspapers, film magazines and glamour magazines like SPAN. For the princely sum of two shillings, you could flick to the pages of delights that included Ms Curzon in glorious colour and several black and white publicity shots.

These magazines in time became much sort after items of memorabilia, the photographs represent the only time the Daleks have appeared on film, and at the time the first opportunity to see the one eyed terrors in colour!

REMEMBERING MELISSA STRIBLING

REMEMBERING: Melissa Stribling who was born today November 7th 1927. Stribling appeared in just the one film with Peter Cushing...but boy did she pick the right one! She also got to play in one of Hammer films most iconic scenes in their 1958 'Dracula', where Christopher Lee's Count, in the dead of night, visits her home and..without a word.. seduces her. The scene is so super charged with sexual tension, it almost crackles off the screen and as a result got the scissors treatment from the censors at the time. In 2013, in Hammer's restored print the exorcised footage was replaced, giving us the full picture of what Director Terence Fisher, Stribling and Lee had originally intended and created.

I've read in several reviews of 'Dracula' both from the time of the films' release in 58 and in more recent times, that Stribling was a curious choice for the role of Mina Holmwood, that compared to the likes of Valerie Gaunt and other Hammer actresses, even though she was only in early 30's when she appeared in Dracula, many thought her slightly ordinary and plain. I totally disagree...but if that was the case, I can't help thinking that, director Fisher's choice in Stribling was intentional. That subtext in the story of Arthur Holmwood's wife being frustrated and bored, suddenly being charmed and seduced by the exotic and erotic Count, Stribling was...the perfect choice.
