CUSHING'S FEMME FATALES: No 1# YVONNE ROMAIN

YVONNE ROMAIN (Yvonne Warren) was born in London and was a young graduate of the Italia Conti Academy. From the age of twelve she appeared in children's shows and repertory theatre around the country. Romain started her film career in her late teens. Her exotic, dark looks and 38-22-36 figure saw her often cast in supporting roles as Italian or Spanish maidens in war films, horror films and comedies.

PLAYING 'BETTY', and before she took her professional name of Romain, Yvonne Warren appeared in the 1957 film 'Murder Reporter', was one of her first speaking roles.

However, it is for her roles in numerous British horror films that she is perhaps most remembered. She has often been quoted as saying she very much enjoyed Corridors of Blood (1958), where she starred alongside Boris Karloff and Christopher Lee, and also in Circus of Horrors (1960) with actor Anton Diffring. She was also to star in the later Devil Doll (1964), about a malevolent ventriloquist's dummy.

Romain is probably best known for the Hammer film classic, The Curse of the Werewolf (1961) where she starred with Oliver Reed, in his first major role. In the CURSE, Romain plays a mute servant girl , who spurns the advances of the sadistic Marques. She is thrown into a prison cell with a deranged beggar who proceeds to rape her.

AS A RESULT, she later gives birth on Christmas Day to future lycanthrope Leon (Reed), though the effort kills her. Hammer studio's publicity stills for 'Werewolf' capitalised on Romain's obvious charms by having her photographed in typical 'scream queen' poses, alongside Reed in his werewolf make up. This publicity caused a little confusion, as neither she or Reed share no actual screen time together.

Perhaps her biggest role, was in another Hammer production, Captain Clegg (1962), aka Night Creatures (US title), playing alongside Peter Cushing and Oliver Reed again, this time as his fiancée. She also appeared alongside Sean Connery twice, in Action of the Tiger (1957), and the gangster film The Frightened City (1961), where she shared equal billing with the pre-Bond star. Romain also costarred in the Danger Man episode titled Sabotage in 1961.

Soon after, Romain moved to Los Angeles and starred alongside Ann-Margret in The Swinger (1966), her last film Hammer films, 'The Brigade of Kandahar' in 1967 and with Elvis Presley in Double Trouble (1967), which she herself calls a 'dreadful film', though she enjoyed the experience. After a break from the screen, Romain emerged from semi-retirement as the title character in the Anthony Perkins/Stephen Sondheim-scripted mystery thriller The Last of Sheila (1973), her last screen role.

Romain married the film composer Leslie Bricusse, who provided the lyrics for the classic James Bond themes Goldfinger and You Only Live Twice, and she later turned down a seven-year contract with Federico Fellini because it meant working away from her Hollywood-based husband and young son . . .

PANIC AT THE CASINO (1981) LESSER SEEN PETER CUSHING FILMS SEASON

LESSER SEEN PETER CUSHING FILMS SEASON: Now here's something different - a Spanish crime caper with an international cast. Panic in the Casino, (aka Black Jack or Asalto al casino) has Peter Cushing as the head of a crime syndicate plotting a casino robbery. Mexican acting legend Hugo Stiglitz (Nightmare City, Cemetery of Terror, Night of 1000 Cats and Jaws rip off Tintorera, - such a cult actor he had a character named after him in Tarantino's Inglourious Bastards) is the police chief, and a cast that includes Claudine Auger (from Bava's A Bay of Blood, and classic giallo The Black Belly of the Tarantula), and Brian Murphy, best known for George and Mildred, a UK television sit-com . . . Many thanks to Jean Layette for his help on sourcing this little seen film.

THE LONG AND SHORT OF WAITING FOR AD 72 AND SATANIC PLUS GIFS FROM AMICUS HAMMER AND KNOX

WE JABBER on and on about these two Peter Cushing / Christopher Lee Hammer films . . . just type the titles into google images, and you'll discover a virtual digital archive, masses of our posts from the last six years! Why? Well, despite both of these late Hammer films, being out of favor and fashion for the best part of 40 odd years . . . I have a great fondness for the idea of Van Helsing and Dracula locked into a modern day dramatic ding dong, on my doorstep... rather than, some Gothic castle , in fictional Olde Worlde Karlsbad? Even though it's chosen location of London, is long gone, along with the loon and flapping flared denims and bat winged shirt collars . . . that era too, is now something locked into the past. Both would make an excellent package for Cushing, Lee and Hammer fans alike.

Our Feature and behind the scenes gallery on
The Satanic Rites of Dracula can be found : HERE!

YOU WANT EXTRAS??? There is a MASS of material available... even if the likes of the cheapest cheapskates of distributors, there are several cast members who are still breathing, for use in those, oh so lazy talking head interviews. The bottom line for any distributor, even the cheapest is, will it SELL? Warner Brothers proved a point, last year when they released probably the smartest looking Hammer film box set ever! . . . .Clean, remastered, region free, Hammer films starring their two biggest stars SELL...even without extra features. The Warner box set, set a standard and fans purchased the lot! So how about it? . . . Would you BUY??

#SILENTBUTDEADLYWEDNESDAY: Herbert Lom in Amicus films, ASYLUM (1972) as Dr. Byron in the story "Mannikins of Horror" . .. it's a neat story, and the 'mini Lom' was a nice touch too. Cushing's story 'The Weird Tailor', was based on a Robert Bloch's story from Karloff's 'Thriller' TV series (1961) . . . these are probably the strongest stories of the bunch maybe? Not counting Cushing's 'Poetic Justice' in 'Tales from the Crypt' . .. of all the portmanteau stories in the Amicus films...do you have TWO FAVORITES??? Tell us why

#SILENTBUTDEADLYWEDNESDAY!: I LOVE THIS SHOT from DRACULA AD 1972 . . . not unlike the 1934 Lon Chaney Jr Universal film, 'SON OF DRACULA', where Dracula turning up under a 'non de plume' as something so ridiculously obvious as ALUCARD, hits every member of the cinema audience  . . . but no one ON the screen. Here our learned Professor, burning the night oil pours over this  anagram . . .and BANG, the LIGHT BULB moment! Cushing just about manages to carry this one off, thanks to that chilling look into the eyes of his ancestor . . .Well, come on. It would have been a very short film, had Van Helsing cottoned-on in the first reel . . .

#SILENTBUTDEADLYWEDNESDAY! . . .AND FINALLY, a request from PAM D.D of this knock out shot from Cushing's performance ad Dr Robert Knox in 'FLESH AND THE FIENDS' (1960). A little girl in the street begs alms from Dr. Knox (Peter Cushing). tells her that he doesn't have any money with him, but if she will step over to his house he will give her some. The little girl politely declines the offer, saying, "Oh, no, you might be Dr. Knox." The unspoken response is a wonderful of example of Peter Cushing's acting skill saying so much with just a look, no words needed.

A FILM WITH A STELLAR cast with actors Donald Pleasence & George Rose as Buke and Hare, Billie Whitelaw & Hammer regular George Woodbridge. #TOOCOOLTUESDAY! AND SO, HERE WE are again! Seems like only a year since the last one!!! HA! I am a SUCKER for Halloween, and this year, it's my first time celebrating it in the US. It's different. Let's just say, the front of the house looks like a Hammer House of Horror playground for Wednesday Addams, and I have spent most of this morning, filling little trick or treat orange ghosty bags, with sweets (candy) Monster stickers and rubber spiders! They tell me to expect . . .  upwards of 50 visitors to the front door, wearing various monster, ghosts and ghoulies. Nothing new there then! I'm prepared! How about you? PLEASE share any pics here of your GET ups, GET Together's and GET downs ...decent please...the vicar and Aunty Mary is watching tonight 😉

After the fuss DIES down, I'll be kicking back with some phantom punch, and watching our #PCAS HALLOWEEN DOUBLE BILL of Peter Cushing movies, which you too can watch here at #PCAS #Facebook, the #PCAS #Youtube Channel and the #PCAS website... AMICUS THE SKULL : BIG FALL : MOMENT OF TERROR MONDAY AND TRICK OR TREAT PLANS?

THIS WEEK'S #MOMENTSOFTERRORMONDAY! comes from Amicus films, 'THE SKULL' (1965) starring Peter Cushing, Christopher Lee . .and here, Peter Woodthrope, who some of you may recognise from his portrayal of Zoltan the hypnotist, Hammer films, 'The Evil of Frankenstein' also with Peter Cushing from the same year. The floating SKULL of the The Skull of the "Marquis de Sade" was a true device of terror, and a concept devised by author and screenplay writer, Robert Bloch.

RARE STILLS GALLERY BEHIND THE SCENES from THE SKULL in  The Amicus Films of Peter Cushing PART ONE Right HERE!

BLOCH WORKED on a few Amicus films, The Skull probably being the best of the bunch. Peter Cushing plays the tormented Christopher MAITLAND . . .a surname that is a death sentence in an Amicus film, as script writer and producer has used the surname so many times in his films! This is great clip. I LOVE the way that Woodthrope's, Bert Travers falls through no one, but TWO glass skylights...and if you listen carefully, it sounds as he went through another too . .. . A TRUE Moment of TERROR! BEST print on the market, would have to be the EUREKA BLU RAY. Great visual quality and sound...and a load of extra features too PLUS It's REGION ZERO! ENJOY! - Marcus
