THE DEVIL’S MEN : του Θωμά Αθ. Αγραφιώτη

Ο κινηματογραφικός οργανισμός «Καραγιάννης-Καρατζόπουλος», μαζί με τη «Φίνος Φιλμ», αποτελεί την πιο παραγωγική κινηματογραφική εταιρεία του λεγόμενου παλιού ελληνικού κινηματογράφου. Η ποσότητα των έργων της δεν ήταν, όμως, αντίστοιχη της ποιότητας, καθώς υπήρξαν κάποιες άλλες εταιρείες, οι οποίες γύριζαν συστηματικώς μεν, αλλά πολύ λιγότερα και ιδίως πολύ ποιοτικότερα έργα, όπως, π.χ., η «Ανζερβός». Αντιθέτως, η εταιρεία «Καραγιάννης-Καρατζόπουλος» διακρίθηκε για την έμφασή της στην ταχεία παρουσίαση και διακίνηση των ταινιών της στους κινηματογράφους, με σημαντική μεν εμπορική επιτυχία, αλλά και με ελάχιστες, πραγματικά, διακριθείσες ποιοτικές παραγωγές, παρά τη σταθερή συνεργασία της εταιρείας με πρωτοκλασάτα ονόματα ηθοποιών, σεναριογράφων κτλ. και με βασικό σκηνοθέτη τον Κώστα Καραγιάννη.

Ο ταχύς και ποσοτικά φορτωμένος όγκος ταινιών της εταιρείας είχε ως βασικό εγκέφαλό της τον ίδιο τον Καραγιάννη, που με τον τρόπο αυτό, κέρδισε πολύ εύκολα τον τίτλο ενός παραγωγικότατου σκηνοθέτη ταινιών δεύτερης διαλογής, αυτών των ταινιών δηλαδή, που διεθνώς είναι γνωστές και ως «B-Movies». Βασικό κριτήριο αυτής της άποψης ήταν η αναμφίβολη ποιοτική ανωτερότητα των ταινιών του αντίπαλου Φίνου. Αυτό δεν σημαίνει, βεβαίως, πως οι λαϊκές ταινίες του Καραγιάννη δεν παρέμεναν ευχάριστες και αγαπητές στο κοινό, ακόμα και σήμερα, με συνέπεια την τότε εμπορική αποδοχή τους, κάτι που οφειλόταν και στη δημοφιλία των πρωταγωνιστών τους. Εξάλλου, ο Καραγιάννης κινούνταν με πολλή ευκολία, από είδος σε είδος, υπηρετώντας τη φαρσοκωμωδία, το μιούζικαλ, το κοινωνικό δράμα, τις ιστορικές και πολεμικές ταινίες ή ακόμα, κάτι που ίσως δεν ξέρουνε πολλοί, το είδος των ταινιών τρόμου.

Η αρχή είχε ήδη γίνει με το ερωτικό θρίλερ «Ταγκό 2001», επίσης άγνωστο στο ευρύ ελληνικό κοινό, για να προχωρήσει αργότερα με την ταινία τρόμου «The Devil’s Men» το 1976, που κυκλοφόρησε με αρκετές παραλλαγές ως προς τον ελληνικό της τίτλο και η οποία αποτελούσε μια διεθνή συμπαραγωγή των εταιρειών: «Poseidon Films» (του ίδιου του σκηνοθέτη) και «Getty Pictures Corporation». Το ακόμα σημαντικότερο, όμως, ήταν ότι με πρωτοβουλία πιθανώς της δεύτερης αγγλικής εταιρείας στο καστ συμπεριλαμβάνονταν δύο διεθνούς εμβέλειας σταρ των ταινιών τρόμου: ο Πήτερ Κούσινγκ και ο Ντόναλντ Πλέζανς. Από την άλλη, πολύ έντονο ήταν και το ελληνικό στοιχείο, ως προς τη διανομή ρόλων

Μια σειρά αξιόλογων ηθοποιών-συνεργατών του Καραγιάννη, από τις ελληνικές ταινίες του, έδωσαν το παρόν σε αυτό το φιλμ: Ο Κώστας Καραγιώργης με το καλλιτεχνικό ψευδώνυμο Κώστας Σκούρας, που ήταν ένας ιδιαίτερα αγαπημένος και δημοφιλής πρωταγωνιστής του θεάτρου και του σινεμά, χάρη κυρίως στην τηλεοπτική του παρουσία, στο σήριαλ «Ο Άγνωστος Πόλεμος», που τον είχε αναδείξει ως αγαπητό ήρωα και υπερασπιστή του καλού στο ευρύ κοινό. Η Άννα Μαντζουράνη, που είχε διακριθεί σε δεύτερους και πάντα συμπαθητικούς ρόλους στις ταινίες του Καραγιάννη. Ο Δημήτρης Μπισλάνης, ηθοποιός δεύτερων ρόλων, στις ταινίες του Καραγιάννη, που διακρινόταν κυρίως σε τύπους αγροίκων ή εγκληματιών. Ο Ανέστης Βλάχος, ένας από τους πιο γνωστούς σκληρούς του ελληνικού κινηματογράφου. Και ο Νίκος Βερλέκης, ανερχόμενος τότε ηθοποιός, ως ένας γοητευτικός και κάπως μοντέρνος ζεν πρεμιέ.

Η υπόθεση του έργου διακρινόταν, επίσης, από έντονα ελληνικό περιεχόμενο. Διαδραματιζόταν σε ένα μάλλον απροσδιόριστο μέρος της βαλκανικής χερσονήσου, αν και όλα τα στοιχεία του μύθου αναφέρονται στην Κρήτη και το τέρας του Μινώταυρου, στο βωμό του οποίου τα μέλη της κοινότητας ενός χωριού θυσίαζαν ανυποψίαστα νεαρά ζευγάρια. Η εξαφάνιση ενός ακόμα ζευγαριού, αναγκάζει τον τοπικό ιερέα (Ντόναλντ Πλέζανς) να ζητήσει τη βοήθεια ενός φίλου του που είναι ντετέκτιβ, διότι ο προκλητικά αδιάφορος διοικητής της τοπικής αστυνομίας (Δημήτρης Μπισλάνης) αρνείται να ασχοληθεί με το θέμα. Ο ντετέκτιβ (Κώστας Καραγιώργης), μολονότι δυσπιστεί αρχικώς, έρχεται από την Αμερική, για να βοηθήσει τον (ρωμαιοκαθολικό και όχι ορθόδοξο) ιερέα φίλο του.

Η στάση της τοπικής κοινότητας αποδεικνύεται προβληματική, όπως συμβαίνει με την περίπτωση της χήρας (Άννα Μαντζουράνη) και του ξενοδόχου-καταστηματάρχη (Ανέστης Βλάχος), αν και περισσότερο προκλητικός εμφανίζεται να είναι ο τοπικός άρχοντας (Πήτερ Κούσινγκ). Ο Κούσινγκ αποδεικνύεται ότι δρα ως ο αρχηγός των ντόπιων χωρικών, που λατρεύουν τον Μινώταυρο, με στοιχεία από πανάρχαια παγανιστικά έθιμα, τα οποία κορυφώνονται με την τέλεση ανθρωποθυσιών. Τελικά, χάρη στο ηρωικό ντουέτο ντετέκτιβ και ιερέα, ένα ζευγάρι σώζεται, την ύστατη στιγμή, με τον Νίκο Βερλέκη στο ρόλο του υποψήφιου θύματος. Το χαμηλού προϋπολογισμού φιλμ φαντάζει κάπως αφελές σήμερα, αλλά παρά τις ατέλειές του, αποτελεί μια σπανιότατη περίπτωση συνύπαρξης των συντελεστών του ελληνικού σινεμά, με ξένους μάστορες των θρίλερ.

 

Βεβαίως, η σκηνοθεσία διακρίνεται από μία φυσιολογική απειρία, ίσως και αμηχανία, ως προς το χειρισμό μιας πολύ δύσκολης θεματικής και παντελώς άγνωστης στο σκηνοθέτη της. Όμως, η σκηνοθετική θέση και η επιτυχία του Καραγιάννη στο να καθοδηγεί, ταυτόχρονα, δυο σταρ του ξένου κινηματογράφου και μάλιστα της εμβέλειας ενός Κούσινγκ και ενός Πλέζανς, δίνει πόντους τόσο στον ίδιο, όσο και στο ίδιο το φιλμ. Θα ήταν πράγματι σημαντικό να ανιχνεύαμε τον τρόπο, με τον οποίο είχε επιτευχθεί αυτή η τόσο σημαντική για τα ελληνικά δεδομένα συνεργασία και συνύπαρξη, όχι απλώς και μόνο στον τομέα της θεματολογίας, με την πανάρχαια λατρεία του Μινώταυρου (κάτι σύνηθες στο ξένο σινεμά, που πολύ συχνά αντλεί από την αρχαία ελληνική πραγματικότητα), όσο με τη δυνατότητα και την τιμή των Ελλήνων ηθοποιών να κινηθούν δίπλα σε έναν Πλέσανς και έναν Κούσινγκ, υπό την καθοδήγηση του Καραγιάννη.

Με τη λογική αυτή, ο Καραγιάννης, ένας άνθρωπος γλεντζές και κάπως επιπόλαια ριψοκίνδυνος στη ζωή του, κάνει ένα άνοιγμα, το οποίο κανείς άλλος ονομαστός Έλληνας σκηνοθέτης δεν τόλμησε. Να πετύχει το πιο σημαντικό ίσως κεφάλαιο της φτωχότατης ελληνικής παραγωγής, στη θεματολογία των θρίλερ. Η αλήθεια είναι ότι το ελληνικό σινεμά κινήθηκε κυρίως στη θεματική των κωμωδιών και των δραμάτων, όπως έκανε και ο ίδιος ο Καραγιάννης, με πενιχρή παραγωγή ταινιών τρόμου, κάτι που χρίζει επίσης μελέτης και που ίσως να οφειλόταν στο ότι στην Ανατολή το κυνήγι μαγισσών δεν ήταν τόσο εντατικό, όπως στη Δύση.

Η Δύση εισάγει τον τρόμο, ως περιεχόμενο, σαν κάτι ξένο από την Ανατολή. Αντιθέτως, στον ελλαδικό χώρο, ο τρόμος ήταν κάτι το οικείο σε όλη την καθημερινότητα και δεν συγκρούστηκε ποτέ με την επιστήμη, στο βαθμό με τον οποίο συγκρούστηκε στη Δύση. Στη δυτική κοινωνία, ο εισαγόμενος τρόμος αποτελούσε από μόνος του μια ολόκληρη, ιδιαίτερη και ξεχωριστή κατηγορία, που ήρθε σε σύγκρουση με τον εξορθολογισμό της δυτικής ζωής. Από την άλλη, η Ανατολή παραμένει προσκολλημένη σε θρύλους και σε παραδόσεις, χωρίς να τις αντιμάχεται, όπως ο δυτικός κόσμος. Με άλλα λόγια, η δυτική επιστήμη συγκρούστηκε με θρύλους ή δεισιδαιμονίες, βιομηχανοποίησε εμπορικά αυτήν την κόντρα (μέσω του σινεμά) και έτσι την αποδέχτηκε, ποιητική αδεία και όχι ως αναπόσπαστο μέρος της ζωής της. Αντίθετα, στην Ελλάδα, στο μεταίχμιο Ανατολής και Δύσης, φαινόμενα, σαν το ξεμάτιασμα, θεωρούνται αναπόσπαστο τμήμα της καθημερινότητας και αποδεκτά, σιωπηρώς, ακόμα και από γιατρούς...

#THROWBACKTHURSDAY AND #Happybirthday to GINA the VAMPIRE GIRL, actress Andre Melly from Hammer films, 'The Brides of Dracula'. Melly, sister of the late jazz musician George, who was born this day in 1932. As the 'pretty' Gina in 'BRIDES' she terrified audiences with her ability to transform into Baron Meinster's vampire victim, all under the watchful eye and direction of Terence Fisher. Three years later she worked with Fisher again in 'The Horror Of It All' as Natalia Marley.

HERE IS A #THROWBACK to August 1977, and the release of the last film Peter Cushing was to make for Amicus producer, Milton Subotsky, 'THE UNCANNY'. The film was launched in a blaze of indifference at the Montréal Film Festival. It was produced in Canada, with a budget of some 800,000 CA Dollars. It's an odd film, a strange mix from the ol Amicus cookbook, that makes a recipe for something that should have been a whole lot tastier! I am still at a loss why the film was also released under the title of 'Brrrr!'? 'Puuuurrr' YES! 'Brrrr!' no. 

'THE UNCANNY' has a great cast, with Cushing acting as the linkage again, with Ray Milland. He plays a nervous wreck called Wilbur Gray. Cushing was not the original choice for casting, but fits the role very well. Is it possible to have a strength in playing the weak???? Donald Pleasence is on board with Cushing again, and even manages to get a photo of himself, as Blofeldt complete with white cat from the James Bond film 'you only live twice' in on the act. Much of the film is delivered in a black comedy style, which maybe confused audiences at the time. But I think it's a great film, with lots of variety and a very entertaining cast.

Terence Fisher's third installment of the Cushing / Hammer films cycle. 

AND FINALLY, Lexi Conroy wrote to say, ' Let's get a little obscure...how about the bit from "It Might be You!" where he looks down out the window, to see people doing foolish things in traffic? Nice choice, Lexi! IT MIGHT BE YOU was a short that Peter Cushing made for the Crown Film Unit of the  Ministry of Information in 1946. Cushing's diction is as sharp as the scalpel he would skillfully wield in 'The Curse Of Frankenstein', some ten short years later in 1957. This short dealing with public safety and 'the rules of the highway' in UK post war traffic also starred Peter Madden, who would appear with Peter Cushing in 'Frankenstein Created Woman' and several other classic Hammer films. - Below

YOU REVIEW: MILL CREEK REVENGE OF FRANKENSTEIN DISAPPOINTMENT

THE REVENGE OF FRANKENSTEIN: Part of a TWO Hammer film package, with The Curse of the Mummy's Tomb, released on blu ray by Mill Creek Entertainment September 2016. Mill Creek's double feature is currently the only way to own these films on BLU RAY:  They can be purchased  HERE

 *Deep, heavy sigh*

Where as Mill Creek Entertainment's blu ray release of The Gorgon I felt looked incredible for it's age and found very few flaws with the look and sound of the film, Revenge of Frankenstein looks as if it had been strained through a dirty wet sock. What a shame, for it is one of the better sequels, in the Hammer films Frankenstein series. Picking up precisely where The Curse of Frankenstein left off, Revenge is a brilliant journey into the twisted genius of Dr. Victor Frankenstein and his machinations to reanimate a human life. Peter Cushing's performance is immaculate and his snark and slight tinge of madness portrayal of Frankenstein is among his finest.

That being said...

This blu ray looks awful. I mean if you told me that this was transferred from a used VHS tape, I wouldn't be hard pressed to believe you. Let's start with the egregious amount of scratches, dirt and vertical lines that mar this 58 year old film. Remember those awful film reels you used to have to watch in high school back in the day?  Well, it's not THAT bad, but the mere fact that I am using that as an example of how to represent the disrespect this transfer is to the film should show you how much of a lost opportunity this is and it's distracting to the enjoyment of viewing the film on this format. When the Columbia Pictures opening came up I let out an audible "Uh-oh." I knew I was in for a challenging viewing of Revenge of Frankenstein. Still, I adore this film and it's always a pleasure to revisit it but it deserves better. Much better.

Now, on to the color quality of this release. There isn't any. It's so diluted through the ravages of time that everything looks washed out. Peter's crystal blue eyes withstanding, it looks as if this was put through a soft filter with an eraser. Where in The Gorgon's colors popped, watching Revenge feels like someone turned off the color hue setting on my television. The 1.66:1 Aspect Ratio doesn't assist this situation in any way and may have been yet another hindrance to this struggling release. Also, the 25g blu ray as opposed to the normal 50g capacity blu ray further recedes the films chances of a successful viewing. If a character moves too fast on screen it gets blurry. That should never happen. I am not going to go into the sound as it is mono and was recorded as such in 1958. There's nothing any one can do about that and for what it is it sounds just fine.

I don't want to blame Mill Creek Entertainment for this transfer but I have to wonder if they a) did the best that they could do with the quality of the print they had access to or b) didn't try at all. With how incredible The Gorgon looked I am going to go by faith and choose answer A. However, I will be keeping an eye on the quality of any future releases along with the two films I have yet to watch from the Double Features. So Mill Creek is currently batting 500. They need to keep an eye on quality control on the text of the blu ray covers (Curese instead of Curse on Curse of The Mummy's Tomb and Gorgan instead of Gorgon.) However, I do look forward to any future Hammer releases from them.

#TOOCOOLTUESDAY: DR WHO AND THE CENSORS

#TOOCOOLTUESDAY : The 'EXAMINER'S REPORT' of the Fourth of February 1965, certainly makes interesting reading. It really was Milton Subotsky's and Max Rosenberg's hope that they would get that 'U' certificate, for this the first of their DALEK feature films. Even though, the examiner DOES seem a little over sensitive to certain, NOISES, FLAMES, SCREAMS, EXPLOSIONS, YELLING, NOT SO NICE LOOKING THALS, SCREAMING and SCREAMING.... the producers, and Subotsky in particular probably felt more than a little deflated, that he was going to have to loose, much of the drama and 'scary bits', if they were to get that, all important, money making, let the kids in now, they all have money (!!!) 'U' certificate! How times have changed....

But then Cushing's costumes were always very classic and romantic. Problem with this costume though is, you would have to be only about 12 inches tall to get into these togs! I like this figure from STARACE of CHRISTOPHER LEE from Hammer films, THE SCARS OF DRACULA, I very much like they used our title design and feature banner too as their background...but I wish they had spent a little more maybe, on the likeness of Christopher Lee. The costume looks great, and i don't think i have ever come across a figure of DRACULA that SITS before either! Funny isn't it? Even sitting down, he still looks TERRIFYING!

BUT AS FOR RESIN FIGURES, this beautiful figure set from #JEFFYAGER gets my vote! VERY MUCH A #TOOCOOLTUESDAY thing!

Always surprising and entertaining. His voice and delivery are unique, as is, his style and the line he follows in all his performances. Never the obvious, always the unpredictable path. There are have been many highs in the Freddie Jones career, but for us here today, we focus on his roles where working with Peter Cushing, brought us EXTRA value and entertainment. 

As the wrecked and manipulated, Professor Julian Keeley in Hammer films, 'The Satanic Rites of Dracula' in 1973, to the pathetic and trapped Professor Richter in 'Frankenstein Must Be Destroyed' in 1969.

Freddie Jones still works, as busy as ever...some would say wasted in a disposable soap opera... but disposable or not, Freddie has played the role of Sandy Thomas since 2005, and in all 552 episodes of ITV's 'Emmerdale', with the same level of authenticity and investment, as any role he has played since he began his long career back in 1960. Fifty six years, and still you can't take your eyes off him! Happy Birthday Freddie From Us All!
