HAMMER FILMS: SWORD OF SHERWOOD FOREST: PETER CUSHING SHERIFF OF NOTTINGHAM
Peter
Cushing as the dashing yet villainous 'Sheriff of Nottingham' in
Hammer's SWORD OF SHERWOOD FOREST (1960) directed by Terence Fisher. The
script seems unsure whether the 'Sheriff' is the real villain or not.
In fact, Richard Pasco's 'Earl of Newark' is the real baddie (Oliver
Reed plays his back-stabbing henchman 'Lord Melton').
Cushing says more with a look than most actors can with a soliloquy
and though the screenplay never really takes full advantage his true
talents it's well worth a watch. Hammer's handsomely mounted film is an
adaptation of the popular television series THE ADVENTURES OF ROBIN HOOD
with Richard Greene reprising his starring role. Cushing,
second-billed, earned £3,500 for his role.

PETER CUSHING AND CHRISTOPHER LEE: NEW YORK HAMMER FILMS DRACULA. PREMIER OR WAS IT?
Peter Cushing and Christopher Lee signing
autographs at the premier of Hammer Films DRACULA /HORROR OF DRACULA in
New York on 25th May, 1958, the day before Peter's birthday on the 26th.
Hammer CEO James Carreras and producer Tony Hinds, also accompanied
them on the visit. Even though this has always been billed as the
'premier' there is evidence that the film had a unofficial 'world
premiere' on May 7th 1958 in Milwaukee.
