HAPPY BIRTHDAY MICHAEL ASPEL : WAS IT GOOD FOR YOU TOO?
HAPPY BIRTHDAY MICHAEL ASPEL! 😀😃 Here's a man who has such a well known face and reputation on UK
television, that when he appears on the screen, it's almost like your
favourite Uncle, has come to tea! Aspel's career has been a prolific to
say the least! Starting in working as a reporter for the local press, by
the early sixties, he had become one of four regular newsreaders on BBC
national television, along with Richard Baker, Robert Dougall and
Corbet Woodall. Then becoming a regular
face presenting BBC flagship programming like 'Come Dancing', 'Crackerjack',
'Ask Aspel', and the Miss World beauty contest, which he covered 14
times.
IT WAS ON A EPISODE of his weekly children's tv show Ask Aspel, where
children requested clips of their favourite tv shows, that Aspel first
worked with Cushing on January 7th 1974. The next time would be quite
'unexpected' and yet quite an event! After a long spell fronting his own
very popular ITV talk show and the horrendous 'never ending' afternoon
programme 'Give Us A Clue' that Aspel took over fronting ITV's long
running favourite, 'This Is your Life' when host Eamonn Andrews died in
1987 until its run ended in 2003.
ABOVE: ACTRESS JOANNA LUMLEY and actor FREDDIE JONES, both who appeared in Hammer films 'THE SATANIC RITES OF DRACULA' (1973) with Cushing! Freddie starred with Cushing in Hammer films, 'FRANKENSTEIN MUST BE DESTROYED' (1969) Lumley also starred with Cushing in the very first episode of 'THE NEW AVENGERS' called 'the Eagle's Nest' in 1976.
DURING THAT RUN, Aspel surprised Peter Cushing, with his
'Big Red Book' on 21st February 1990. Cushing's 'This Is your Life'
episode almost didn't happen, when the secret cover of surprise was
blown a few weeks before the recording. Cushing never let on he knew 'he
was coming!' and Aspel did a great job steering Cushing, who at this
time could be quite unpredictable during live recordings, through an
army of guests who had worked with Peter over the years. One surprise
guest was Ursula Andress, who had flown quite a journey to be there for
Cushing's evening. When she was announced and grandly made her way onto
the set to hug Peter, he welcomed her with hugs when she made a
reference to the film they made together.. 'She' in 1965. 'She who must
be obeyed!' said Andress. Cushing suggestively replied with glee, 'Oh
and you still are darling...What would you like me to DO?' which got a
big laugh.
I BELIEVE IT WAS quite a task for the 'This Is Your Life' team, after much
research and study to decide on guests for the show. Guests had to be
special, entertaining, engaging and guaranteed not to run away from
Aspel when he shock surprised them with the book and the evening's
planned recording before a live audience, of their lives shared with the
public. Aspel had specially requested Peter Cushing be used in the
series, several times. The start of preparation and plans were almost
uncovered each time and the shows were cancelled. Eventually, Aspel got
his wish and Peter Cushing had an evening he would never forget! Thank
you for that Mr Aspel ...and a VERY Happy Birthday to YOU!
TWO PAGES from Peter Cushing and Christopher Lee's scripts. BOTH from Hammer Dracula films. Cushing's from 'The Satanic Rites of Dracula' (1973) and Lee's 'Taste the Blood of Dracula' (1970) BOTH films had a trying and difficult 'birthing' process . . I think for both Cushing and Lee, making a Hammer Dracula film, was a different experience. . . but it is now, both interesting and quite amusing how Lee and Cushing dealt with prep for the role, short-falls of the script, the detail, the dialogue... Cushing as we know, loaded his scripts with yards of notes, references, costume suggestions and anything that would aid him in doing his best on the screen.. he was quite meticulous.
LEE IN THIS INSTANCE, makes no secret of again being not at all happy with
the contents of the page... or any page I would guess. Linda Hayden's
Alice lines of 'Master, Master, you are back!' and her '(Whimpering
Passionately: Love me! Love Me!) are given the short shrift note with '
Ridiculous Lines!' and another 'NO!' ... for Lee, it must have been
extremely frustrating.
I HAVE SHARED many times that personally I feel Hammer's Dracula's are 'films of moments' 😊😉 Some scenes are very good indeed. Others cringing. I
am sure you have watched them all many times..so over at the FACEBOOK PCASUK FAN PAGE I am asking, is there
any scene, line of dialogue or sequence, that if you hand a magic wand,
you would change today?? Marcus

FRIENDS : CUSHING TALKS LEE AND LEE TALKS CUSHING : AWARDS AND PRAISE FOR PC
PETER CUSHING was a such a humble guy, when he received awards, praise
and such, he still seriously thought about, IF he did actually deserved
such recognition!. Even his appearance on #ThisIsYourLife,
they broke with convention and gave him the heads up. But he did
receive several awards over the years, quite a few career changing ones
in the 50's... more nods and acknowledgments in the later.. His award
for his performance in #TalesfromtheCrypt was very well deserved . . as
were the others. BUT do you think there were performances that slipped
by, that should have been awarded? Over at the FACEBOOK PCAS FAN PAGE we are asking, are there roles that you have
watched, where you think, THAT should have been given more recognition
and maybe a well deserved award?? I would love to read your suggestions .
. no matter what role you think worthy 🤔😊 - Marcus

THE COMPLETE THIS IS YOUR LIFE : PETER CUSHING! FEMME FATALE FRIDAY!
#CUSHINGFEMMEFATALES FRIDAY! Here is
PETER CUSHING on THIS IS YOUR LIFE from 1990. And VERY happy and humble he LOOKS too! It's interesting how many women there are and the women, connected to Cushing who actually
appear on the show. Even though some of Cushing's closest actress
friends were then living away from the UK, where the show was recorded,
they are absent from the recording . . Long time friend and college
INGRID PITT is missing and siting drinking coffee, just outside London! A show like this, that ploughs into the public
and private life of the subject on display, can be a sensitive and quite
political exercise. Although, Cushing reacts as though it's all a BIG
surprise, he did know the show was happening. He wasn't over the moon
about appearing, so the handling of guests, was the responsibility of a
trusted and close 'associate'. We can presume, those choices were behind
the participating guests...and why Christopher Lee is NOT in the
studio.
THIS CUSHING FEMME FATALE FEATURE is PART ONE of a TWO PART feature, a little peep at the actresses he also knew Peter in their private lives too! MORE to come in Part TWO next FRIDAY! ENJOY!!

WHEN VINCENT PRICE SURPRISED CHRISTOPHER LEE, LEE SURPRISED CUSHING AND CUSHING SURPRISED LEE!
#HAMMERFILMSATURDAY: NOT A POST ON A HAMMER FILM as such, but certainly the emphasis is on shock and surprise! All three actors in this feature, relied on the power of surprise and of the unexpected, those golden rules were also the glue that held a television show like, 'THIS IS YOUR LIFE' together, and made it such a thrill to watch. The big question, after the initial netting of the programmes 'victim', was who was going to walk through the door and appear in the studio next?
THERE CAN'T BE MANY who have never seen the show, which was originally screened in the USA and  hosted by its creator and producer, Ralph Edwards. Christopher Lee was chosen as the shows subject on 3rd April 1974. At 51 years old, Lee still had a very long way to go and several major career defining roles at this point in his long life. The guests included  his wife, Gitte, daughter Christina, his mother,
sister, brother, and fellow actors Peter Cushing, Vincent Price, Patrick
Macnee, and Sammy Davis Jr. Lee who sometimes could be a little stiff and guarded in personal appearances on tv, looked relaxed and having a good time, thankfully a position that we would eventually see him adopt more often, as he got older.
BECAUSE OF WORK commitments, Christopher Lee was unable to attend Peter Cushing's 'The Is Your Life' tribute show in 1990. But he did record a message for his friend, whic was played to Cushing, during the recording of the show.
THE 'NO-SHOW' at the studio, for Peter's programme, surprised a few people. Often the show had a habit of showing a recording of a guest who could be there, for whatever reason.. and then bringing the same guest on from around the back...they were there all the time! But, sadly not in this case. The show was a great success, with much laughter from Peter, who waqs obviously enjoying himself. Maybe, a Cushing This Is Your Life should have happened sooner? Peter looked frail, many  guests who could have contributed much to the story of Peter's life, had long passed. Having said that, Joyce Broughton, in several interviews, always made the point of, Cushing telling her, 'If that show gets in touch, tell them no. Under no circumstances, no!' It''s worth noting that, Cushing DID know about the  planned recording weeks before, when he became so suspicious of Joyce's behavior, she had to tell him. If that was a good thing or not, you decide...
RALPH EDWARDS APPROACHES, Price in a bookstore and says, 'It's good to see you are autographing a copy of your own book, 'A Treasury of American Art' ..and at no point does Vincent suspect anything is a-miss. 'Yes, that's right.' says Price, 'It's a wonderful book!' 'Well..' says Edwards, 'I have another book, with your name on it, right on the front cover!'....and at that point, starts to pull out, the BIG book from a plastic carrier bag. 'I REALLY don't believe it!' howls Price. And, another one heads off to '...a studio, just a few blocks away' to meet his family and friends, before the cameras. Price has a wonderful time, and his genuine warmth and love for the guests who appear, is plain to see.

THIS IS YOUR LIFE: GUESTING FOR ERNIE'S LIFE AND THE QUEST FOR THAT CHEQUE!
THIS WEEKEND HERE IN THE UK, it's a Bank Holiday. Which means, traditionally means, The Sound of Music with Julie Andrews will be screened on tv for the 100th time, relatives will visit, over stay and eat you out of house and home, it WILL rain for the entirety of the holiday break, and boredom will reign too! SO, here's a little treat, to be enjoyed and savored, not only here by us Brits, but across the globe, or were ever people need a giggle.
YOU CAN WATCH MANY OF PETER CUSHING'S APPEARANCES ON THE MORECAMBE AND WISE SHOW, IN OUR SPECIAL PLAYLIST AT OUR PCAS YOU TUBE CHANNEL : HERE!
FULL FILM: Peter Cushing in 'A Chump At Oxford' with Laurel and Hardy
FOR THE FIRST TIME we present Peter Cushing's appearance as a guest on the This Is Your Life UK show, featuring one half of that great British comedy duo, Morecambe and Wise. Sadly, Eric Morecambe had passed by this point in 1993, but Ernie bravely worked on for several years. Peter Cushing appeared many times as a guest on their show. The first was in 1969, he appeared in a comedy play 'written' by Ernie, where Peter played king Arthur. Throughout the BBC era of the show, he would regularly join Wise and his comic partner, Eric Morecambe. On stage; he would constantly seek payment for his first 1969 appearance, wearily asking "Have you got my five pounds yet?"
FULL FILM: Peter Cushing in 'A Chump At Oxford' with Laurel and Hardy
THIS RUNNING JOKE continued when the duo left the BBC and moved to Thames Television
in 1978. Cushing appeared in their first special for Thames Television
on 18 October, still asking to be paid, with the hosts repeatedly trying
to get rid of him; at the end of the show, Morecambe placed some money
in a wallet wired up to a bomb, in an attempt to blow Cushing up in
exaggerated comedic style. In the duo's 1980 Christmas special, Cushing
pretended to be the Prime Minister while Morecambe and Wise caroled outside 10 Downing Street; he made the comedians give him money and finally came out to declare "Paid, at last!"
ON FEBRUARY 3rd 1972 and "Live" on television, all glitter and
glamour, is the once-a-year event, held in the Albert Hall, when the
film and television industry presents awards covering the whole range of
the industry . . .. and Peter Cushing is there to present his pals,
Morecambe and Wise with their Best Light Entertainment Performance
Award, along with their writer, Eddie Braben . . . and no, they didn't
bring him his money!
