REMEMBERING ACTOR JOHN HURT: ONE YEAR ON . . .

TODAY we remember actor, JOHN HURT. Hurts career spanned six decades. He initially came to prominence for his supporting role as Richard Rich in the film A Man for All Seasons (1966). He played leading roles as Quentin Crisp in the film The Naked Civil Servant (1975), John Merrick in David Lynch's biopic The Elephant Man (1980), Winston Smith in the dystopian drama Nineteen Eighty-Four (1984), Mr. Braddock in the Stephen Frears drama The Hit (1984), and Stephen Ward in the drama depicting the Profumo affair, Scandal (1989). He is also known for his television roles such as Caligula in I, Claudius (1976), and the War Doctor in Doctor Who. Seventy Seven seems no age to leave us these days. I think there will always be a very sizeable space, left behind now that Hurt is no longer with us...it would take a very considerable talent and skill, to even approach even the sides of that space... 😉 We Remember John Hurt today . .

IT'S ONLY MY OPINION but, I have always thought, for an actor, a man with such an instantly recognisable face, Hurt did an incredible job in his characters. He wasn't really an actor who used false noses, teeth and other aids. His portrayals come form within, the heart. He truly did play from the inside out. There will always be 'The Elephant Man' and one or two others, where the addition of prosthetics were used.

BUT FOR ME, the roles that stand out, are the ones were it was, him vanishing by his skill. From very early on, in a film like The Ghoul, that face, those eyes...it's John Hurt! There after, he could be anyone, he chose. I only know one other actor today, who comes anywhere near that ability, and that is Gary Oldman . .

DR WHO AND THE DALEKS : RELEASED 50 YEARS AGO TODAY

Today marks the 50th anniversary of the release of AARU Productions of 'DR WHO AND THE DALEKS' starring Peter Cushing as Dr Who, supported by Roy Castle, Jennie Linden and Roberta Tovey. The film is based on the second serial of the British science fiction Doctor Who television programme, The Daleks, produced by the BBC. Shot in Technicolor, it is the first Doctor Who story to be made in colour and in a widescreen format.

Peter Cushing's portrayal of Dr Who was never intended to form part of the ongoing storylines of the television series. His role in neither this film or sequel, Daleks Invasion Earth 2150 AD are not considered canon. Elements from the programme were used, however, such as various characters, the Daleks and a police box time machine, albeit in re-imagined forms.

Produced by Milton Subotsky and his partner, Max Rosenberg who formed Amicus Productions in the early 1960's, Dr Who and the Daleks production was managed by an off shoot company AARU, specifically form for the two Dr Who enterprises.The film was at the time, the twentieth biggest British box office moneymaker in 1965.

Good old fashioned family entertainment, from a more innocent time, Dr Who and the Daleks celebrates the 50th Anniversary of the day of it's cinema release in the UK today!

NEW DOCTOR WHO ACTOR : WE'RE ALL WAITING

 
If you are a fan of the BBC Doctor Who television series, it can't have escaped your notice that tonight at 7pm the BBC announce the name of the actor who will take over the role from Matt Smith.
 

Speculation on who would take over the role has been rife since Smith announced in June that he would be leaving the sci-fi series. And so, we wait.....

Oh my! Ideas of what could be inside those armored shells of the Daleks have certainly come a long way since Peter's movie back in 1965. It was almost as if the makers thought the creature inside was also sat on a little seat, wheeling the figure around..not unlike the real controllers! I was only 6 years of age when I saw this film, the first movie I saw in the cinema. It is this scene and the creepy claw like hand I remember above all else... DR WHO: PETER CUSHING: THE USUAL SUSPECTS: LEE SULLIVAN.

This fantastic DR WHO artwork comes courtesy of artist and illustrator Lee Sullivan who joined PCASUK a few weeks ago and was commissioned last year to produce this piece of art for The Cartoon Museum in London, to promote an exhibition of Dr Who comic strips. It's a re working of an earlier version that appeared in the Dr Who Monthly Magazine and is a pastiche of 'The Usual Suspects' movie poster. Peter Cushing may not be considered 'Dr Who Canon' but he certainly looks as if he belongs here!

These are high-quality photo prints on satin paper, made in small batches, signed and numbered as part of an open-ended 'series 0' run, as they are not going to be generally available. If they ever are, then that'll be 'series 1' - so '0' will be as exclusive as they get, for what it's worth! Paypal is my preferred method of payment.
