FIRST BOND GIRL AND HAMMER FILM ACTRESS EUNICE GAYSON DIES AGED 90

VERY SAD NEWS released today, about the passing of wonderful actress and lady... Eunice Gayson. I am sure many of you will be aware of her connection to Hammer films and her playing of Margaret in Cushing's second Frankenstein film, The Revenge of Frankenstein in 1958. She not only was the FIRST official Bond girl, starring as Sylvia Trench in Dr No and From Russia With Love. Eunice also had quite the stage and theatre and TV career appearing in ITV's The Avengers and she played Frau Schrader (The Baroness) in the London production of The Sound Of Music at the Palace Theatre, actually singing two songs which were cut from the movie version of the story.

NEWS OF HER SAD passing has hit newspapers, TV and radio around the world. As her official Twitter account states this morning... she was an amazing lady who left a lasting impression on everyone she met. She will be very much missed . . . Eunice Gayson 17th March 1928 - June 8th 2018.

CHRISTOPHER LEE SATURDAY EUNICE HAS A BIRTHDAY AND LEE HAS A TALL TERRIBLE TALE!

TODAY WE WISH a happy birthday to the lovely Eunice Gayson. Best known for playing Sylvia Trench, James Bond's girlfriend in the first two Bond films (Dr. No 1963 and From Russia with Love 1963). Originally, Gayson was to be cast as Miss Moneypenny, but that part went to Lois Maxwell instead. BELOW we have great part of the series that we produced with BRUCE G HALLENBECK on the actresses tht appeared with PETER CUSHING in the HAMMER FILMS Frankenstein series of film, of which EUNICE was indeed one . .

#FRANKENSTEINFRIDAY: HUMAN MUNCHIES AT HAMMER

#FRANKENSTEINFRIDAY: Hammer films first step into their Frankenstein franchise was The Curse of Frankenstein in 1957. This was quickly followed, after it's huge commercial success by The Revenge of Frankenstein the following year. As with Curse, it's success is no small part because of Cushing's stellar return and performance, as the Baron who cheated death. But for me, there has always been more than one act of cheating in this particular return. . . . 

FRANCIS MATTHEWS is terrific and believable as the good doctor's assistant, Hans. Eunice Gayson as Margret, struggles but does well with what she has been given by scriptwriter Jimmy Sangster, who had an annoying habit of giving his female characters a one dimensional, very shallow filed to plough, when it came to any of his written women. And the supporting cast were top too. I love Michael Gwynn's work, but not in this one. This is not because he was weak, like with Gayson's lot. No, Gwynn was working with a very weak concept...a man who turns Cannibal! Sangster went on record as saying, he did struggle with coming up with an angle, a 'thing' ..part of what that latest Frankenstein abomination did, that was above murder and creating chaos. This creation should repulse and make audiences shriek with terror once again. He thought long and hard, and eventually came up with, cannibalism. Well, I don't buy it. I never have, never will.

THE WHOLE PREMISE that supports the reason why poor ol Karl has the human munchies, in the framework of this Gothic horror, sticks out as desperate, ill conceived, heavy handed and over the top. I would have been quite happy with another round of, just murder, unhappy monster and leave it at that. The Hammer Frankenstein's were most entertaining when they focused on 'The Baron'.. how bad, how manipulative, cruel and relentless HE could be. It's interesting that the most popular and financially successful films of the series, Curse and Destroyed, had Baron Frankenstein at the center of the story. On the whole, I think the Frankenstein audience went to see Peter Cushing, and were quite informed about how they liked their Gothic horror menu served up...intelligent, imaginative and with some class and taste. To me, if you throw cannibalism into the recipe, it's just too rich, one spice too many. Cannibalism...In other words, just doesn't taste that good... 😉 What do you think? Agree? disagree? - Marcus

When the Baron returned in The Revenge of Frankenstein (1958), he had another woman to contend with. This time, her name was Margaret Conrad, and she was portrayed by London-born Eunice Gayson, a veteran of television who had also worked for Hammer in To Have and to Hold (1951) and who had appeared in Val Guest's comedy Carry on Admiral (1957), which despite its title, was not a part of Peter Rogers' Carry on series, which would not commence until the following year`

THE REVENGE OF FRANKENSTEIN TRAILER

The character of Margaret Conrad was a nurse to the mysterious 'Dr Stein' (Guess who?) in his hospital for 'the poor and needy.' Gayson, of course, would achieve even more everlasting fame in 1962's Dr No when she provided a tuxedoed Sean Connery one of the most famous cues in screen history: 'I admire your luck, Mr…?' she inquiresat a card table. Connery's reply, for the first time, is: 'Bond…James Bond.' She became one of the few actresses to appear in two Bond movies, returning for the following year's From Russia With Love in the same role.

In this case, the Baron's new creation is a far more human and sympathetic one, beautifully played by the expressive Michael Gwynn. As Margaret, Gayson has even less to do than Court had in Curse, but she does serve to advance the narrative when she inadvertently releases the 'creature' from his bonds. She also serves as 'Beauty' to Gwynn's 'Beast,' as the creature Karl finds himself in love with her from afar.

The self-confessed romantic Terence Fisher is afforded every opportunity by Jimmy Sangster's screenplay to play up the unrequited love element for all it's worth, and he makes the most of it The Revenge of Frankenstein - is one part horror, one part black comedy, one part love story - is high water mark of Hammer's Frankenstein series.
