A WONDERFUL QUOTE from Peter Cushing, with his touching and typical shy
depreciation... 'Well, because of some...all sorts of reason' says he 😊
Incredible that he almost talked himself out of the role.. and we would
never have his Van Helsing! One of my favourite all time Peter Cushing
roles for sure
😊
... AND HE PLAYED THEM very well indeed..... and the list is endless 😄BUT over at the Facebook PCASUK Fan Page, I have open the door on asking followers and friends, if there was ever a character he played, that you didn't like?
Mark Gatiss directs Hammer Horror’s 'Unquenchable Thirst Of Dracula,' an
unmade Hammer Horror script set in 1930s India. Lewis MacLeod (Dead
Ringers) channels Christopher Lee as Dracula, whilst Michael Sheen
narrates. The cast includes Nikesh Patel (Indian Summers, Midnight’s
Children), Meera Syal, Kulvinder Ghir, Anna Madeley, Ayesha Dharker and
Raj Ghatek and is adapted for radio by Mark Gatiss and Laurence Bowen.
Hammer Films is synonymous with horror, after defining the genre in
Britain with classics including Dracula, The Curse Of Frankenstein and
The Mummy. This new Radio 4 dramatisation is the first new Hammer
Dracula production in 43 years and is part of Radio 4’s ongoing Unmade
Movie series.
Mark Gatiss says: “What better way to celebrate Hallowe’en than with a
lost Hammer movie? And not just any Hammer movie! Anthony Hind's
thrillingly titled The Unquenchable Thirst Of Dracula is a wonderful,
rich and atmospheric script and way ahead of its time - set in the 30s, a
sort of 'Heat and Dust and Fangs'! It was nearly made in the early 70s
on location in India and I was thrilled to assemble a fantastic cast
headed by Nikesh Patel, Michael Sheen, Meera Syal and Anna Madeley to
bring this forgotten gem to gory life.”
Michael Sheen says: "The prospect of a long lost Dracula script offering
itself to me like a succulent pale neck was just too tempting. I
devoured it in one sitting and cannot promise I won't strike again.”

Today,
the nineteenth of September we remember the late ANTHONY HINDS, today
he would have been his 96th birthday. And we are marking this day in style, a whole new PLAYLIST of vintage INTERVIEW CLIPS with Anthony Hinds, available to watch at our PCAS YOUTUBE CHANNEL and LINKED HERE TOO! There are also EXPANDED features on HINDS films for Hammer, accessible at our supplement website, THEBLACKBOXCLUB.COM For many Hammer film fans, Hinds
represents the 'Golden Years' of the studios output and production.
Producer and script writer, he was responsible for some of Peter
Cushing's most revered work in the fantasy genre.
In Hammer's early days, it was Hinds idea to hire country houses and
to based the production and shooting in the rooms and grounds of the
locations, which saved the the studio huge production costs. He was also the brains behind shooting productions 'back to back'. (See the CLIP ABOVE!) 'The Reptile' and 'The Plague of the Zombies', are two very good examples.
In his private life, Hinds lived in the stock-belt district of London. His family owned a large chain of jewellery stores through-out the UK. But to his friends, the details of Hinds day job was only shared outside of the family, on a 'need-to-know' basis. Hinds told neighbours and acquaintances he was the owner manager of a string of Hairdressing salons in the city, and that the E Type Jag in his drive, was the result of many shampoo and sets! It wasn't that he was embarrassed about his job, but as he explained many years later, he didn't think the daily doings of The Baron, body parts, Dracula and gore, wouldn't go down too well, with the chaps at the golf club . . .
ORIGINALLY POSTED IN 2013 ON HIS PASSING : OUR TRIBUTE
His script
writing skills, have been picked over by many, but few could doubt his
skill in managing tight budgets, and building impressive productions,
with very limited resources and finance...and for this, he was indeed,
the 'Master Builder and Architect of Hammer films'...and for that, we
are very grateful.....

PRODUCER AND SCRIPTWRITER, Anthony Hinds, shares his thoughts on his time at Hammer films . . .
THERE'S A WORRY SELECTION of bodies popping up throughout a small
suburb of Paris..and they all have their throats torn out! Police
surgeon, Peter Cushing suspects something is a foot..or paw! Tyburn
films, Legend of the Werewolf is one of a pair of films that neatly
brought the Brit Horror Era to a close. Cushing made both Legend and The
Ghoul with director, Freddie Francis. Kevin Francis, son of Fred was
CEO of Tyburn, and looked at one point to have the winning formula to keep the Brit Fantasy Flick alive.
The Making Of Legend Of The Werewolf
Behind the Scenes Photographs, Script and Interviews HERE! SOON!
ALAS, THE SHIP had already left the dock and was sailing for tastes a
new, splashed with gore, serial killers and mayhem. 'Legend', 'The
Ghoul' and Cushing bring a certain dignity to the screen. A class of
film, that would soon vanish from our screens.
IN THE CLIP ABOVE, Cushing is joined by Roy Castle. A performer who in the
past had been a one man, dancing, singing, musician entertainer who had a
vast experience of performing in variety, on both stage and tv. Castle
appeared with Cushing in two other films, 'Dr Terrors House of Horrors'
and 'Dr Who and the Daleks' both for Amicus films, who at one time were
the only real competition to Hammer films. The Dr Who film was Amicus in
all but name. Cushing and Castle knew each other well enough, to bounce
and feed each other in their two scenes in 'Werewolf', and bring a
certain black comedy-vaudeville to the film.
'LEGEND' WAS IN PART, a Tony (Hammer Films) Hinds script, which
Kevin Francis added to. The two characters in this clip, funnily enough,
do not appear in the first draft of the script! The film has a very
neat cast, even Michael Ripper, credited as a 'Sewer Man', gets to
re-enact his look of horror, first seen in Hammer films 'The Mummy' with
Cushing and Lee back in 1959! Ron Moody plays the lovely scruffy ol zoo
keeper, David Rintoul, the doomed Etoile, Lynn Dalby is a sensitive
love interest, but Renee Houston in her last screen performance before
her death in 1980, as Chou-Chou and Hugh Griffith as Maestro Pamponi,
almost steal the show.
This film at the time of writing, still is without a dvd release.
