PETER CUSHING PLASTER HANDS PRINTS : OLIVER REED AND BARBARA WINDSOR PLUS PIRATES AND UNCOOL SUN!

BACK IN THE 1990'S, cinema and the arts in the UK were looking for all kinds of inventive ways to mark and celebrate British Cinema and it's many stars. One such great idea was the Best Of British Cinema Hand Prints! The release of this photograph to the press on February 24th 1992 and it probably hasn't seen the light of day since then, came with the press notes of . . .

'Stars of British Cinema put the palm prints into plaster slabs to part of a new monument to the stars! The slabs will be placed in the Prince Charles Cinema, in Leicester Square, London.Among the stars who placed the palms are Oliver Reed, Barbara Windsor and Peter Cushing'

ABOVE are two neat behind the scenes photographs taken during Cushing's and Reed's shooting of 'Captain Clegg / Night Creatures' for Hammer films in 1962 . Cushing was such a stickler for getting detail correct, that when the script called for him to perform a wedding service for Reed's and Yvonne Romain's characters, he called in Rev Sidney Doran, the minister for the Bray church where this scene, and a lot of the scenes in the film was shot!

OLIVER REED had worked with Peter in several films, 'The Sword of Sherwood Forest 'in 1960, and a great pirate-smuggling movie, 'Captain Clegg' aka 'Night Creatures' in 1962, both for Hammer Films and the weird, wonderful and terribly UN-PC, 'A Touch of the Sun' in 1979. Barbara Windsor, didn't work with #PeterCushing on the big screen, but on occasions like this, as there were many in the 1980's, they did socially rub shoulders. Peter looks very happy to be there!

ABOVE AND VERY BELOW: Peter Cushing, Bruce Boa and Oliver Reed in the 1979 film 'A Touch of the Sun', a movie that manages to cross  just about every UN-PC line, within the first ten minutes of it's sometimes uncomfortable screen time. Below, on it's release, straight to video, the misprint of Reed's surname, was just about it's last bow of bad timing, before sinking into a very dark sunset  . .

WATCH! A TOUCH OF SUN : LESSER SEEN PETER CUSHING FILMS SEASON

THE LESSER SEEN PETER CUSHING FILMS SEASON: Number 3# : 'A TOUCH OF SUN' or 'No Secrets' is ANOTHER one of those Cushing films, where . . . it's not what you are expecting. It feels like a 'Carry On' film, mixed with maybe the chaos of Casino Royale (1965) played out by the Worthington Town Amateur Little Theatre Group, with poor Peter Cushing, as always giving his best. He DOES actually do quite well, and has some of the best line. But much of his, 'business' on screen, seems under rehearsed. Which I am sure, he would have hated!

FOR A LONG TIME NOW, I have had the feeling this was film was produced as someones, TAX right off! Made in Zambia, it never left there. It never received a theatrical release, though some do say it did get a tv screening in New Zealand! Cushing plays Commissioner Potts, a role that was originally intended for actor Terry-Thomas . .. probably hoping to cash in on his 1959 film success, 'Carlton Browne of the FO'... but THAT was 1959. I would LOVE to hear your opinions on this one. You'll be puzzled, you'll be foxed, you..might not make it to the end! Many thanks to Jean Layette for his help on sourcing this little seen... film. 😉 TRIVIA: As well as Cushing and Reed, there is another Hammer Film connection in this film. Did you spot them?

OLIVER REED REMEMBERED

Today we remember Robert Oliver Reed, born today February 13th 1938. The 'Cushing Connection' spreads over three films, 'Captain Clegg /Night Creatures' in 1962, 'Sword of Sherwood Forest' in 60, both for Hammer films and a car crash of a film entitled 'A Touch of the Sun' in 1979... a film produced in Africa, and never found a distributor outside of it! A larger than life character both on and off the screen..who was always happy to acknowledge his 'Hammer film roots.... 'The Curse of the Werewolf in 1961 and 'These Are The Damned' in 1963. Happy Birthday Oliver!

THE CASE IS SOLVED : AND WE HAVE OUR WINNERS : SHOCK BASKERVILLE BLU RAY PRIZES

CONGRATULATIONS to our FIVE WINNERS! Last night we launched the second of our two 'The Hound of the Baskerviles' competitions in conjunction with Shock Video.. we asked you to spot a missing item in a publicity still from the 1959 #hammerfilm starring Peter Cushing and Christopher Lee... under the banner of a bit of fun, we told you a thief had stolen the item, and entitled our little competition caper, The Case of the Disappearing Gift of Africa and the Race Against Time...which in itself was a clue to the missing item, that you had to find within a time limit. It was tricky....

The FIVE WINNERS have each bagged themselves a copy of #hammerfilms 'The Hound of the Baskervilles' from Shock Video... the FIRST time available on blu ray....a smashing blu ray / dvd combo pack!

AND THE WINNERS ARE: JOHN JOHNSON, TATYANA DYBINA, SEAN CORRIGAN, KEN HILTON and FAY SAINSBURY. WELL DONE!

THE SOLUTION AND ANSWER:
There were many, many of you who spotted the missing item in the publicity photograph...though for some it was a little more tricky. Some though Christopher Lee's ring had vanished, a wrist watch (?) had moved. One or two answered that we had moved our logo at the bottom right of the pic!

But, what we were looking for, was a detail in Sir Henry's costume... that in fact, wasn't really part of Sir Henry's costume at all ! Christopher Lee, since he was a young man has worn a bracelet made of 'Elephant Hair' on his right wrist. It was a gift given to him while serving with the SAS in South Africa during World War Two.... ('Gift' and Africa'...the title to comp, see what we did there? ) You can spot it in many of his films, Dracula (1958), Rasputin (1966), The Devil Rides Out (1968) ... often it is hidden with costume cuffs and jackets, but it's always there, because according to Lee, he has never taken it off since the day he first tied it to his wrist....

So, there you go... Look out for news about a GREAT competition we have lined up for Halloween over the next few days...
