HELLO AT LAST! MAY 17TH 1994

A RECALL and REPOST: Here's a post, I made at the Facebook PCASuk Fan Page quite a while ago, that has been requested by Harvey Cole, NY USA... the images are of a slightly grainy quality, being screen captures from the pcasuk video #PeterCushing and #ChristopherLee ''The Last Meeting' 1994. Clips of which you can watch at the pcasuk youtube channel

ABOVE: One of my fav clips from the many. Cushing asks of Christopher Lee's wife Birgit (Gitta) Kroencke, to which Lee announces, 'Gitta sends her love, She said, 'Give him my love... while he's here!'... their 'black and gallows humour' just shows how close as friends they really were... - Marcus

'IT'S ALL BEEN RATHER LOVELY!' REMEMBERING: JOHN LE MESURIER : BORN TODAY 1912

#REMEMBERING actor #JOHNLEMESURIER Born today April 4th 1912! The son of a solicitor, British character actor John Le Mesurier attended public school in Dorset, England, before embarking on a career in law. However, acting was his true calling, and at age 20, with his parents' approval, he began his acting career by studying drama at the Fay Compton School of Acting, where one of his classmates was Alec Guinness.

A pic of Le Mesurier on the train platform at Bristol. I LOVE his message in the signature, 'Best wishes John Le Mesurier (Bristol Station for some reason!!) - marcus

TO COVER Le Mesurier's work in film and tv, would need a fan page of it's own. I've always admired his languid, good-natured, bemused style. It made his comedy roles even funnier. Le Meisurier, was an actor that really did fit the motto of 'Don't Act, Be yourself'... With great talent and ease, Le Mesurier applied this to many roles, rarely stepping out of that frame, a shift of two degrees either way, but not that often.

'Its All Been Rather Lovely': Remembering John Le Mesurier. Pic with the death notice he requested be seen in the press... John Le Mesurier wishes it to be known that he conked out on November 15. He sadly misses his family and friends.' .......

IF YOU CATCH Le Mesurier in a role, look carefully because his hands are marvellous to watch. Along with his eyes they did a lot of work very elegantly. Very much like Cushing, he made all his roles believable. The script maybe a dead trout, sinking but his performance, not so!

IN THE UK he is best remembered for his most popular role of Sgt. Wilson in the long-running television series Dad's Army (1968). Although preferring comedy, Le Mesurier also excelled in drama, winning a BAFTA award for Best Actor of the Year in 1971 for his performance in Dennis Potter's 'Traitor' (1971) (TV).

SADLY, Le Mesurier only appeared in one film with Peter Cushing, in the role of Barrymore, in #Hammerfilms 'The Hound of the Baskerviles'. Hardly any screen time together, it's a great shame that he didn't work with Cushing again. Btw, the order of John Le Mesurier and actor Ewen Solon's who played Stapleton names are reversed in the closing cast credits.

Much missed and so loved as a bit of a national institution.. Remembered today, John Le Mesurier : April 5, 1912 - November 15, 1983  - Marcus

#GOODBYE AND THE LAST MEETING : #PETERCUSHING AND #CHRISTOPHERLEE

I AM SURE, we have all seen the photograph of #PeterCushing and #ChristopherLee standing in a doorway of the recording studio in Canterbury, when leaving after the recording their narration of Ted Newsom's 'Flesh and Blood' doc in 1994? It may well be the 'last photograph' .. but as we have seen from the library of the PCASuk 'Last Meeting' clips of Peter and Lee having great fun and telling stories.. a video camera was running the whole time too.

HENCE AT THE TOP is a screen capture, after the doorway pic, of Lee walking Peter to the car, that was taking him home to the Broughton household. In real time, without posing or cameras, Christopher Lee said goodbye to Peter, in private in the car park of the studio.... then Peter is helped into the back of the car, wrestling with a brolly, they close the back passenger door, and Peter waves smiling, through a misted up window . . . In hindsight, you can see, it had to be that way, or neither of them would ever have left. - marcus brooks

SPIN ON #ALFREDPENNYWORTH? CUSHING AND MITCHELL DINE OUT ON BBC '1984' TERROR BROADCAST

AN INTERESTING IDEA from the PCASuk FB page of #TheImaginativeHobbyist, a freelance digital artist / designer, film-maker, and photographer.. a few days ago and shared at the Facebook PCASuk Fan Page, a few days ago . . .Peter Cushing as Alfred Pennyworth! . . I wonder if this would have worked?

EMBRACING the soon to be released blu ray remaster of the BBC broadcast of '1984' from #BFI on April 11, 2022... Here is a vintage magazine clipping scanned from the PCASuk scrapbooks, of #PeterCushing and #YvonneMitchell taking dinner for publicity.. I guess... after terrifying the whole country and raising questions with #WinstonChurchill's government ? One of four pictures, I have no idea sadly, which magazine this appeared in, as it was printed, clipped and added to the scrapbook, long before 'I was a twinkle in my father's eye'... or so he would often tell me of anything pre #1960's. Peter Cushing and Mitchell ( Winston and Julia in 1984) look to ready to chow -down on some roast beef, after they take of their cuppa. I am guessing this was either for 'the camera' or before Peter became a #vegetarian.. or maybe this was actually for Yvonne and knowing Peter, he had a cheese sandwich and apple in his pocket !- Marcus

ABOVE: VINTAGE press clipping, with the 'Cushing's at home' wife, Helen and Peter study the reaction to the broadcast of TWO LIVE transmissions on BBC television, the first on a SUNDAY evening
Saturday 11th December 1954... prompted something of an upset. There were complaints about the "horrific" content (particularly the Room 101 scene where Smith is threatened with torture by rats) and the "subversive" nature of the play. Most were worried by the depiction of a totalitarian regime controlling the population's freedom of thought. Questions in the House of Commons and #WinstonChurchill's government on justifying the option of the second / repeat broadcast the following week. Amidst objections the BBC went ahead with a complete live restaging on Thursday 16 December, although the decision went to the 'Board of Governors', which narrowly voted in favour of the second performance. This was introduced live on camera by Head of Drama Michael Barry, who had already appeared on the Monday's edition of the topical news programme Panorama to defend the production. The seven million viewers who watched the Thursday performance was the largest television audience in the UK since the Coronation of Queen Elizabeth 2nd the previous year.

MORE SCREEN CAPTURES have recently been released from the BFI remastered #BLURAY and #DVD of the #PeterCushing #BBC production of #GeorgeOrwell's '1984'. It looks a very impressive image, after decades of watching fuzzy vhs and bootleg broadcast versions, for sure. I can't wait to get my copy . . . will you be getting your copy on the 11th April too?
