MONSTERMONDAY EXTRA: BEHIND SCENES COLLINSON VAMPIRE GIRL

#MONSTERMONDAY: Here's a rare behind pic taken on the set of Hammer films, 'Twins of Evil' with Peter Cushing taking that fatal swing with his 'Vampire-Slaying-Sythe' and thus destroying not only a vampire but also his niece Frieda (Madeleine Collinson) ... but hey, the 'brotherhood' were very happy. All Gustav had to do now, was kill off Count Karnstein...and most of us know, how THAT one turned out…

AN INTERESTING POINT, Madeleine Collinson who played the vampire twin Frieda, was in fact the less extrovert, calmer Collinson sister... maybe so, but come the closing scenes, it was she who 'lost her head'TING POINT, Madeleine Collinson who played the vampire twin Frieda, was in fact the less extrovert, calmer Collinson sister... maybe so, but come the closing scenes, it was she who 'lost her head' . . .😉

ROOM 101 AND MONSTERMONDAY : THEY ARE WATCHING

#MONSTERMONDAY : O'BRIEN. A MONSTER? I've pulled one from the Cushing Gallery of Rogues this week, that goes back to a time before he had even dipped a toe in the waters of 'petrifying pics'! Andre Morell's O'Brien is at the centre of the story of Orwell's classic tale of the world gone to hell in a bucket, ruled by one Big Brother, leaders and others, who use cruelty and torture as their primary method of control. O'Brien is relentless once he gets our man Winston Smith played by Cushing, strapped to a table, in order to, through torture, make Winston "perfect," and to "save" him. But such is the 'power of love' Winston proves a difficult nut to crack..'My poor friend, you are almost well!'..and so with the help of the contents of 'Room 101', O'Brien plays his last card...

'You once asked me what was in Room 101. It is there we have the means to root out the last lingering deception. What happens in Room 101, is the worst thing in the world. It varies from individual to individual. It can be death by burning, burial alive..or something quite trivial, not even fatal...In YOUR case, we both happen to know 'What The Worse Thing in the World'...happens to be....!'

WHAT FOLLOWS SHOCKED the tv audiences of the live 1954 broadcast on Sunday 12th December, and also scored the highest tv rating in the UK since Queen Elizabeth's II Coronation! But furious critics and watchdogs complained and campaigned for the second live performance of the play, a few days later to be canceled. Michael Barry head of drama at the BBC refused to concede, the broadcast went ahead and recorded for posterity.

NOTE: JUST SIX DAYS AGO, (Tuesday) the New York Times announced that ' George Orwell's famed dystopian novel of life in a totalitarian state, was suddenly No. 6 on Amazon's bestseller list. On Monday, too, the book hovered between No. 5 and No. 7 on that same bestseller list'. . . It's worth noting that this isn't the first time "1984" has seen a sales spike in recent years. The book also hit Amazon's bestseller list in 2013 after Edward Snowden revealed the extent of the National Security Agency's surveillance program.

WE AWAIT THE RELEASE of the BFI REMASTERED blu ray of Peter Cushing's BBC production of 1984, Andre Morell, O'Brien and all.. THREE times the release has been announced, three times it has been canceled. Rumors put Orwell's estate to blame, for allegedly blocking the release (??) One would have thought that the BFI would have looked into rights issues before embarking on a costly remastering? Maybe that isn't the reason at all? Anyone one would think there's a force who doesn't want us to WATCH it...for whatever reason?? Are they WATCHING us too?

THURSDAY: AND #THROWBACKTHURSDAY brought us a dapper Peter Cushing with friend, George Copper out for a stroll and a photo op, during a party with the Old Vic Company in 1949.  During this time, with finances almost at zero, Cushing engaged in work with Olivier's company in a production of Chekhov's, 'Jest In One Act', entitled 'The Proposal'. A review in April's 'Theatre World' wrote, '...Peter Cushing as Lomov, reveals himself as a comedian of outstanding gifts..' Below a publicity still from the production with Cushing as Lomov and Derek Penley . . . .

FRIDAY: WE MARKED MICHAEL RIPPER'S BIRTHDAY! 'I've seen the likes tonight, that mortal eyes shouldn't look at!'... say that line of dialogue and any Hammer film fan worth his or her salt, quick as a flash will reply, 'Michael Ripper, as the poacher in 'The Mummy!'.. And it is Michael Ripper who we remember today on the day his birth, 27th January 1913. Ripper appeared in many productions for Hammer, seven with Peter Cushing, nine with Christopher Lee. Inn keepers, coachmen, police officers, Ripper an accomplished stage and film actor it could be argued is as much part of the Hammer family as Cushing, Lee, Fisher and Francis. Christopher Lee once announced to a packed convention in Baltimore, with Ripper standing at his side.. 'This man IS Hammer!' And for many of us, he always will be…. What are some of your favorite Ripper performances?

FRIDAY ALSO BROUGHT US THIS GEM! A chance to see SIDE BY SIDE comparisons of Peter Cushing from his 1977 Tarkin performance and the CGI from 2016 in Rogue One... also the images of both the late Carrie Fisher and her younger CGI from Rogue One... What do you think???

JOHN HURT DIES AGED 77

VERY SAD NEWS to report the wonderful and talented actor John Hurt has passed away at aged 77

HIS CAREER has spanned six decades. He initially came to prominence for his supporting role as Richard Rich in the film A Man for All Seasons (1966). After this, he played leading roles as Quentin Crisp in the film The Naked Civil Servant (1975), John Merrick in David Lynch's biopic The Elephant Man (1980), Winston Smith in the dystopian drama Nineteen Eighty-Four (1984), Mr. Braddock in the Stephen Frears drama The Hit (1984), and Stephen Ward in the drama depicting the Profumo affair, Scandal (1989). He is also known for his television roles such as Caligula in I, Claudius (1976), and the War Doctor in Doctor Who.

ABOVE IS just a small sample of the wonderful chemistry between Hurt and Cushing in the Tyburn film, 'The Ghoul'... after watching this film for the first time in the cinema, the lasting impression was not left by 'the thing in the attic' or any of the gruesome deeds that unfolded during the ninety minutes... for me it was John Hurt's portrayal of the twisted, manipulative and unfortunate, Private John Rawlings, that made the impression.

PETER CUSHING'S DOCTOR Lawrence and Hurt's creepy grounds-man, where really unsettling together, you knew Veronica Carlson's Daphne, was doomed! What a huge loss to us all..but what a legacy too! John Hurt 1940 -2017 . . . .
