AMICUS AND HAMMER FILMS GEM: DENHOLM ELLIOT REMEMBERED TODAY!

REMEMBERING today.. Denholm Elliott, who was born on this day in 1922. A long and fascinating career, with which seems to have cross just about every genre, he even had some time to stop off and appear in one of the best portmanteau Amicus films with Peter Cushing in the much loved, The House that Dripped Blood in 1971 . . .

ELLIOIT followed that with another Amicus film, Vault of Horror in 1973 and appeared in Hammer films last horror film, To The Devil A Daughter with Christopher Lee in 1976. For many today, he is well remembered for his role as Marcus Brody in Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade in 1989. Your favourite Denholm Elliot role? I thought he was very good in Brimstone and Treacle in 1987... with pop star Sting, of all people. But ...interesting none the less...

REFERRING BACK to our previous post today, on the subject of salaries and profits, it wasn't common knowledge until very recently that SCARS was the most profitable Dracula film for Lee. His contract stipulated that he was to receive a percentage of the film's profits, making it not only his most profitable Dracula film, but quite likely his most profitable Hammer film of them all! The death scene unfortunately, scuppered the spectacular planned death of another Hammer Lee character many years later, when Lee played Father Michael in the 1976, 'To The Devil A Daughter'..last minute changes to his death scene resulted in a duff anti climax to the film, and still many years later, Hammer fans are scratching their heads in confusion at the improvised ending of what would be Hammer's last Horror film, for quite sometime.

HORROR CHANNEL CHRISTOPHER LEE TRIBUTE NIGHT

The Horror Channel is to dedicate a whole night’s programming to the cinematic legacy of Christopher Lee who died on June 7th. On July 2nd from 9pm they'll be bringing you four of Christopher Lee’s finest pieces; THE DEVIL RIDES OUT, DRACULA PRINCE OF DARKNESS, SCARS OF DRACULA and TO THE DEVIL A DAUGHTER. Stewart Bridle, Horror Channel’s manager said today: “'We feel the movies chosen for the night represent some of his most iconic characters and performances during his time with Hammer Films and in the horror genre. Watching these you realise why he was so highly respected as a fantastic character actor who could both be a stoic hero and also a terrifying villain. He will be greatly missed but he lives on through his amazing legacy of movies”. So, be sure to make a date in your diaries and set your recorders....
