JOIN US IN WISHING MELVYN HAYES a VERY Happy Birthday today. Melvyn was
born today January 11th 1935, and since 1950 when he was "disappearing
twice daily for £4 per week" performing the indian rope trick in
Maskelyne's Mysteries at the Comedy Theatre in London! A very long and
accomplished career on stage, tv and the big screen. Melvyn is quite an
institution in the UK, having appeared in many TV dramas, soaps and
comedy shows, the most successful probably being 'It Aint Half Hot Mum'
in the 1970's. The show is now banished to 'Room 101' at the BBC, being
considered like many shows from that era, quite UN-PC... you decide?
MELVYN WORKED WITH Peter Cushing as the young Baron Frankenstein in
Cushing's first film for Hammer, 'The Curse of Frankenstein' (1957) he
appeared as Daft Jamie in the brilliant 'Flesh and the Fiends' (1960)
and with Cushing in 'Violent Playground' (1958) His last appearance with
Peter was in the doomed 'A Touch of the Sun' in 1979 with Oliver

From the moment DR DEATH's face appears, between those elevator
doors...you just know, this ain't going to end well.... A nice touch
though! I just love how in Amicus films, MADHOUSE, the good doctor pops
up anywhere and everywhere... just like, here! When the film does
reveal just WHO is behind that mask, it makes Dr DEATH's actions, all
the more interesting, I thought. Mind you, I might be on my own
here...but I NEVER guessed who was behind that mask, until the
reveal....

#HORRORIBLEDEATHWEDNESDAY! Death By Wedding Cake, must be one of the oddest of demises in the Amicus films canon. Well, I know it was the knife, and the strange hex that was placed on Ian Bannen's lying Christopher Lowe in this weird little tale 'An Act of Kindness' in 'From Beyond the Grave' (1974).
A FILM THAT is certainly in the top three of many a Cushing Fan's listings. This death seems all the more sad, when you consider that all Lowe wanted was reputation, respect and a loving wife. Poor guy must have blinkers on, the day Donald and his 'mad as a tea pot' daughter, stepped into his life...Cake, anyone?

REMEMBERING:
Actor Donald Pleasence who was born today in 1919... Pleasence appeared
alongside Peter Cushing in a surprising amount of titles. From the
quite early on brilliant BBC production of '1984' to the not so
brilliant 'The Devil's Men', 'Flesh and the Fiends', 'Trial By Combat'
and 'From Beyond The Grave' In a very lengthy career, with many
highlights, Pleasence was always entertaining, especially with nervous,
evil obsessive characters. Pleasence is probably best known for his role
of Dr. Sam Loomis in the 'Halloween' films...a role interestingly
enough that Peter Cushing was originally approached to play...
Whether Cushing had any real interest in play Sam Loomis or
or not, it still would have made . . . a very nice blu ray cover!

#THROWBACKTHURSDAY!:
NEWS! It looks like Universal's 'reboot-rebrand-remake' of the classic
Monsters series, has no sooner started, first with a nose dive response
to the recent #TomCriuse, #THEMUMMY release... than things stall with
the studios planned #TheBrideofFrankenstein remake....Production was set to start this February in London, but the studio and
director Bill Condon have paused plans to ensure the script is in
tip-top condition. Condon has been working on the
script with David Koepp, and while the screenplay is in good shape,
sources say both men want more time to rework it to better reflect their
vision....a wise move I'd say.
Our chap, only made one brush with the concept of creating 'A Woman' in
Hammer's own Frankenstein franchise #Frankenstein Created Woman in
1967. It turned out quite well, granted fans were a little disappointed
there was no 'monster' as such, rather the attractive #SusanDenberg,
going on a psycho killing spree instead. It did good box office in a
time when scriptwriters and studios weren't so fixated on 'super-heroes'
and
'making-everything-thing-look-the-same-as-the-last-box-office-SF-blizt'.....
yeah. A films with a story and real characters, would be a nice change .

#THROWBACKTHURSDAY: It's
wobbly. It's edited with a bread knife. It's got timing that would stop
an atomic clock. The supporting acting is dire. The continuity, has
none. BUT it does have Donald Pleasence and Peter Cushing. The Devil's
Men / Land of the Minotaur / The Devil's People, call it what you will.
It's still a terrible mess.. though it does have an EXPLODING Peter
Cushing...quite literally. It's the only decent two minutes of the film
sadly.... but worth a throwback just for that!

To try and explain WHAT exactly is going on here, with out giving anything away about the twisty-wobbly-plot of #HOUSEOFTHELONGSHADOWS is some-what harder! All I will say is, if you still haven't had the opportunity to watch the ONE FILM where #PeterCushing #ChristopherLee and #VincentPrice star TOGETHER for the first and ONLY time, you need to do so!

#SILENTBUTDEADLY:I SEEM TO BE getting a lot of interest in requested #GIFS featuring Donald Pleasence at the mo! We have posted several rare pics and bits over the past two weeks, especially from his role in 'BEYOND THE GRAVE'. Here he is playing ham Hollywood film star, Valentine De'ath and cutting off a LARGE SLICE, in demonstrating 'How to play a death screen when you are about to be murdered in an iron maiden!' Hmm, I think we can all see where that's going?
THE UNCANNY is Milton Subotsky's distant relative of product from his beloved Amicus films. Sadly the film gets next to little love, despite having some truly frightening moments. Cushing as ever plays it straight as link man, Wilbur Gray and his disabling fear of milk lapping felines. While Pleasence in his story 'Hollywood 1936', melts the celluloid with fiery spite, ego, and cruelty, it's divine to watch! Donald PLEASENCE worked along side Peter Cushing in several productions. #SILENTBUTDEADLY: IN 1967 THE #HAMMERFILMS Frankenstein series took an interesting turn. After three adventures on film where the Baron rustle-up not the prettiest of creations from the charnel houses and graveyards, his next adventure and focus of attention was something very much easier on the eye. And if that wasn't enough, he accomplishes something that moves his work beyond the stitches, the unpredictable brains and behavior of his reactivated dead, because the Baron captures, THE SOUL!
AS USUAL, Cushing doesn't flinch at these lofty goings-on, and I feel the film 'Frankenstein Created Woman' owes much of it's cult status not just to super siren Susan Denberg, the created Woman of the title, but as ever to Peter Cushing, whose conviction and performance is the real life and SOUL of the film! #GIF requested by Marty Kaiser, US.
