HENRY OSCAR REMEMBERED : BRIDES AND SHERLOCK

HERE IS AN ACTOR with a name, that probably most of us would have forgotten, but certainly we know his face πŸ˜‰ Today marks the birthday of HENRY OSCAR or Henry Wale as some would have known him, back in the day. Oscar changed his name and began acting in 1911, having studied under Elsie Fogerty at the Central School of Speech and Drama.

ON FILM OSCAR played professional characters, dentist for Hitchcock, school teachers, doctors, bank mangers, all usually stiff, authoritative and at times pompous, this was probably why Terence Fisher cast him as Herr Lang, head of the charming 'School for Young Ladies' in Hammer films 'The Brides of Dracula' in 1960. Again, pompous, his ego is deflated when Peter Cushing flashes his 'Dr Van Helsing' 'calling card'! It's a lovely scene. Oscar was to work with Cushing again on November 4th 1968, in episode 9 'Thor Bridge' of Cushing's BBC 'Sherlock Holmes' television series, as Bates. Sadly this episode was wiped in the great BBC 'spring clean', so we have no idea or images just how that looked. But my guess is, just like in 'Brides' both Cushing and Oscar, would have squeezed and presented quite a show!

OSCAR ALSO APPEARED in a wide range of films, Alfred Hitchcock's The Man Who Knew Too Much (1934), The Four Feathers (1939), Hatter's Castle (1942), Bonnie Prince Charlie (1948), Beau Brummell (1954), The Little Hut (1957), Oscar Wilde (1960), Lawrence of Arabia (1962), The Long Ships (1963) and Murder Ahoy! (1964). Today, he isn't forgotten 😊Please join us in remembering and celebrating a Very Happy Birthday to Henry Oscar today! πŸ˜‰

THE EVANSON TOUCH WITH CUSHING PRICE AND LEE ARTWORK : CUSHING COLLECTING WEDNESDAY

#COLLECTINGCUSHING Wednesday! Andrew Evanson has been busy! Here's his latest set of three individual pieces of artwork, each featuring the face of one of the fearsome three! See if you too can work out the influence of the text or design in the back ground of each portrait? Nice touch! Each would make a fine addition to anyone's Cushing Collection! Andrew has told me... ' I did them on my ipad Pro 12.9' with an apple pencil using Auto Desk Sketchbook Pro. They have been done to match my colour scheme as the intention is to frame them. Obviously, as they are digital, I can easily print them off onto A4 using archival quality paper and inks if people are interested but any larger prints would have to be done through a print firm' ....Thank you Andrew for sending this in todayπŸ˜‰

THE CONNECTION BETWEEN PC AND HITCHCOCKS PSYCHO! THIS WEEKS TUESDAY TOUGHIE!

HERE IS THIS WEEKS PCAS TUESDAY TOUGHIE! As the banner says, it ISN'T a connection with writer ROBERT BLOCH who did a great job of adapting and writing the scripts for a few of the AMICUS films that PETER CUSHING appeared in down the years. IT IS'NT the film THE SKULL which has an interesting BONE HEAD not unlike the preserved HEAD of  MRS BATES. Amicus films THE SKULL also has some nasty STABBINGS with DAGGERS and KNIVES, but they are not the connection either. SOME OF YOU may guess it, some of you will be MILES out, though it's nothing to do with distance, but certainly if you use all your SENSES, you might get it! THere's no prizes for guessing, but do feel free to drop us a link a petercushingpcas@gmail.com if you think you can SEE IT! Otherwise, ANSWER NEXT WEEK !

DID YOU CATCH Callum McKelvie's SUNDAY CUSHING FEATURE this WEEKEND? IF NOT, NOW is your chance to click and catch it! FULL of GIFS, PICS and Callum's story on how he first came to SEE and REALLY appreciate Hammer films, BRIDES OF DRACULA and PETER CUSHING. JUST CLICK  HERE!
