PETER THE GREAT : RARE 'ALEXANDER' 1955 STILLS

TWO RARE STILLS TWO of  #PeterCushing as General Memnon in 'Alexander the Great' (1955) Cushing recalls hi working on 'Alexander' in his second autobiography, 'Past Forgetting' 'As the Athenian General Memnon... having taken a fond farewell of my wife, played by Clare Bloom. I rode a horse, bareback, to be slaughtered in the battle of Granicus, by #RichardBurton's legions!!!'

CUSHING'S quite athletic frame severed him well in this film, as he must have had quite a physical ability and stamina, for those retakes! Peter often when asked about his horse riding ability would jest and say he 'took those scenes at my peril' but one can see, he was quite an established natural rider, even when riding bareback. Peter Cushing's placing in what was quite an international cast was a big boost to his film career.

THERE IS NO DOUBT, he was a gaining quite a presence, having performed excellently in 'The End of the Affair' and winning several Best Actor Awards for his television work.. in a time, he was often to be found either on tv or BBC radio dramas. As proof, in addition to 'Alexander the Great', Cushing had been very busy during 1954 and 55 on television appearing in 'Richard of Bordeaux ' 'The Browning Version' 'The Moment' and #Nigel Kneals' 'The Creature' .. later to be produced as a film adaption in 1957 for #Hammerfilms 'The Abominable Snowman of the Himalayas' with Cushing starring with Forest Tucker. - Marcus

PETER BOWLES : THEATRE AND TELEVISION ACTOR DIES

I WAS VERY SAD to hear that the actor Peter Bowles has passed away and already many fine and kind tributes now appearing on the news features and the net this afternoon. While reading them, and the credits to his very much loved appearances on BBC shows including 'To The Manor Born', I found myself thinking, surely somewhere #PeterCushing must have worked with him. What a fine casting PC and PB would have made to any play, film or theatre production.. and then, up it popped! Just the one. BBC 'Sherlock Holmes' 1968, 'The Naval Treaty' starring Cushing, Nigel Stock, Jane Lapotaire as Annie Harrison, Dennis Price as Lord Holdhurst . . and Peter Bowles as Joseph Harrison!

WHAT AN EPISODE THAT would to been to have watched, but as with many things touched by the BBC from those times it appears all that remains of the episode is a few seconds clips, now probably locked in BBC vaults and a few black and white grainy screen captures, which ain't being shared with the public, anytime ....soon. Probably wiped, lost, sat on or used as a door stop? Who knows? What a pity, to have lost what was no doubt a real little gem of a production and today an actor of such a very rare quality . . If he could have read that evidence today, no doubt he would treated it with his trademark, 'sniff' and then passing, with just a beat, 'Hmm...' His timing was everything. A charming man, skilled and blessed with the art of economy and stillness on screen and stage. Peter Bowles : October 16th 1936 - March 17th 2022. - marcus
