#TALKINGBOOKS 'THE SOLITARY CYCLIST' : #PETERCUSHING READS SHERLOCK HOLMES WEEK FOUR!

TODAY BEING #SHERLOCKSUNDAY! at the Facebook PCASUK Fan Page, we present 'The Solitary Cyclist' STORY FOUR of thirteen, one every Sunday from 'The Return of Sherlock Holmes' read by Peter Cushing, written by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle. One of the many charming things about Peter reading these stories is his forever crisp diction and engaging reading style. One thing that surprised me with the stories so far, is the obvious fun Cushing is no doubt having, occasionally swinging in and out of character voices and accents! Something we rarely got to see him do on screen in the many scenes of some 92 films! Peter Cushing's recordings were originally recorded and published in the UK by the Royal National Institute for the Blind in 1971.

THE SOLITARY CYCLIST, is one of my personal favourites.. when first reading the Holmes stories, I was young enough to know little of life, so couldn't or want to try and guess the ending... and Solitary Cyclist, has some lovely touches, here Cushing swings in and out as Mrs Violet Smith . .'Oh he was hideously strong!' . . and it's a joy listen to, for sure. 'The Adventure of the Solitary Cyclist' is one of Doyle's short stories, first published in the Collier's magazine, 26th December 1903 (US) and in The Strand Magazine in January 1904 (UK). This is the 31st Sherlock Holmes story. There will be another story from 'The Return of Sherlock Holmes' read by Peter Cushing, next Sunday ðŸ˜Š

IN ANSWER TO A QUESTION from a follower at the Facebook PCASUK Fan Page yesterday, enquiring if Birgit, Christopher Lee's wife accompanied him and attended Peter Cushing Memorial Service back in 1995, here is a photograph of the both entering St Paul's Church on the day . . .

Filmed by Pathe at a New Year's Eve Party, Fashion Show at the Criterion Restaurant, London in 1955, this for many will make some strange viewing today, but that is how things were back then. #PeterCushing and a young #JonPertwee and his brother Michael show off their manly waistcoats, as part of the 'Gentlemen's Waistcoat Club' while the models display their 'feminine versions' of the attire. Pathe News covered it.... with their aloof 'this will never take off' attitude. If only they knew what was coming. In under ten years, Fem garments would coming off and BURNT. It's an interesting bit of 'bent' society at that time, and PC and Pertwee do look quite dapper... you think?? Catch this at the Facebook PCASUK Fan Page

REMEMBERING RALPH BATES : THE RALPH BATES PANCREATIC CANCER RESERCH FUND

REMEMBERING: Born today in 1940, RALPH BATES. Sadly, no longer with us. A talented actor and a truly gentle and kind man. The great, great nephew of the renowned French scientist Louis Pasteur developed into a strangely handsome dark haired, pale complexioned English actor. Ralph Bates was born in 1940 in Bristol, England and attended the University of Dublin and studied at the Yale Drama School. His dramatic talents first came to audiences attention playing the evil Emperor Caligula in the well received BBC TV series The Caesar's (1968). However, the Hammer studios resurrection of the horror genre was then in full stride, and Bates was soon engulfed in the swirling cloak of Hammer's success as he appeared in several horror films in quick succession.

FIRSTLY in a support role as demonic Lord Courtley in 'Taste the Blood of Dracula' (1970), followed as the lead character Baron Frankenstein in The Horror of Frankenstein (1970), then as Giles Barton in the sexy Lust for a Vampire (1971) and as the well meaning Dr. Jekyll in an unusual spin on the Robert Louis Stevenson story in Dr Jekyll & Sister Hyde (1971) and 'Fear in the Night' with Peter Cushing in 1972. Bates brought a new zest to Hammer and with his stylish dialogue delivery and film acting methods, he quickly won himself quite a few fans in both critics and regular film goers!

UNFORTUNATELY, by the early 1970s there had been a downturn in Hammer studios fortunes, and Bates then found himself turning to more traditional character work in other production houses and he appeared in several films before snaring other superb villainous role as George Warleggan in the 18th century period piece Poldark (1975). After Poldark, Bates himself kept busy in a few forgettable UK made TV shows and television film roles which did not really do justice to his remarkable talents. The best of these and affectionately remembered by many was, Dear John, a British sitcom, written by John Sullivan. There were two series and a special broadcast in 1986 and 1987.

Sadly, in late 1980s his health rapidly deteriorated. Ralph Bates passed from cancer aged only 51 on 27th March 1991.

The Ralph Bates Pancreatic Cancer Research Fund, was established in Ralph's name, firstly by his wife Virginia. They are now a registered charity with trustees of Virginia Bates, Dr John Glees MD FRCR, Michael Bridge FCA, Sharon Sullivan, Nigel Baly BSC, Les Biggs ACIS (Secretary) and Sir Peter Blake CBE,RDI,RA. If you need their help or want to make a contribution or contact them , here is a LINK  and their location. #LUCASFILM COULD RELEASE EXTENDED VERSION OF #ROGUEONE WITH EXTRA #VADER #TARKIN FOOTAGE

NEWS: #Lucasfilm could release an extended version of Star Wars Rogue One! A picture of Rogue One: A Star Wars Story which has recently been shared on social media reveals a deleted scene of #DarthVader from the movie. Lucasfilm’s first Star Wars spin-off released in 2016, shed light on one of the rebels’ war episodes in their fight against the empire that followed the command and the rebel pilots who sacrificed their lives to steal the plans for the Star. of death. This action was essential to obtain the weak point of the space station and be able to destroy it in 'A New Hope'.

#PeterCushing was recreated via CGI to include Grand Moff Tarkin; meanwhile, a different actress was used as Princess Leia, but the visuals made her look a bit more like young Carrie Fisher. Finally, Darth Vader was also in the movie.

EXTRACTS FROM A NEW INTERVIEW with #GUYHENRY now at the Facebook PCASUK Fan Page

ALTHOUGH used sparingly, #RogueOne had one of its most iconic scenes in #StarWars yet: the terrifying hallway scene. But aside from this and a couple more appearances throughout the film, there was supposed to be another sequence that he was involved in. A still from that scene was recently revealed by #ILM animation director Hal Hickel. In the comments, he said that Vader was supposed to have a conversation with #Tarkin in this scene; unfortunately, he couldn’t remember what the dialogue was going to be!!!

FULL STORY :HERE!

IT'S NO SECRET that Rogue One went through some significant changes with script rewrites and new footage that ultimately altered the film’s final epic ending. This particular shot of Vader appeared in trailers for the film, but never appeared in the theatrical cut of the film. Hickel didn’t go into detail about why it was cut, but said it didn’t fit the final shape of the project, so they decided to scrap it. It’s understandable that fans in the comments are asking for more information. Some of them raised the idea of Lucasfilm releasing an extended version with this particular moment and all other unused shots. Hickel responded that there is enough interest, and that it is not out of the question.

DEPENDING ON WHAT #Vader and Tarkin were talking about in the aforementioned scene, it could have been one of the best scenes in the movie that was eventually cut. The enduring appeal of 'Rogue One: A Star Wars Story ' is that it never lost sight of what it was supposed to be, with the focus on its main characters. But, he peppered enough references and cameos to effectively establish his place in the franchise, and the use of Vader was just enough not to outshine his main characters.

HMMM WELL, THEY CERTAINLY KNOW how to cast that hook huh? I can't wait to hear those lines and see that footage, plus I would think the extras would be something special too? What do you think?? - Marcus
