IN 1977, legendary Amicus co-founder Milton Subotsky (ASYLUM, AND NOW THE SCREAMING STARTS) teamed with Canadian producer Claude Héroux (SCANNERS, VIDEODROME) for the anthology shocker Celluloid Diaries calls “highly entertaining…the best killer cat movie there is!” Peter Cushing, Ray Milland, Donald Pleasence, Samantha Eggar (THE BROOD), Susan Penhaligon (PATRICK), John Vernon (POINT BLANK) and Alexandra Stewart (GOODBYE EMMANUELLE) star in this grisly portmanteau about a paranoid writer (Cushing) who must convince his publisher (Milland) that all cats are unholy fiends based on three tales of kitty carnage. MADNESS! HP LOVECRAFT : WHAT COULD HAVE BEEN AND VINCENT AND PETER ON THE SET OF A MADNESS THAT CERTAINLY WAS!

HERE IS SOMETHING THAT COULD HAVE BEEN. But sadly wasn't. After Hammer films went under and was then restarted and rebooted by the late ROY SKEGGS, the opportunity was there for some to take a first look at the many films and projects that the studio had one time considered for production. Many of these also had Peter Cushing in mind, in the casting along with Christopher Lee. The majority sank even before the ink was dry on the note paper or on Tom Chantrell's poster! The above poster, is a but a 'wouldn't it have been great if..' piece if artwork, we often see here at PCAS. Many are emailed or offered up for posting. Sometimes the idea is better than the artwork, but often, as in this case, the artist has a great skill and has also, come up with a concept, were we back in 1966, Sir James Carrerars would have been all too happy to have added it to his pile of posters and concepts for his backers and to have asked, 'How would like to have a slice of our NEXT production?'

OFTEN IT IS difficult to connect the artwork be it for funding OR even the theatrical release poster tothe film was devised for. Can YOU connect the artwork with the THREE films these were created for?

AS WE ARE NOW all aware these days, that was exactly how the Carreras formula Carrerars and how often Hammer  budgets were built. Usually, nothing of a script, just three lines typed on a piece of paper, a VERY interesting poster and Sir James doing the sell. Which of course, he was very skilled and sucessful at doing. One can only guess how Cushing would have played his role, how Lee if the money was right would have nailed it, I am sure Pleasence would have been very happy to join in, a lover of Lovecraft and like Lee had already worked with Cushing in quite a few other productions. The opinion at the FACEBOOK PCAS FAN PAGE has been interesting. Some believing we were doing an EARLY April Fool post! Some holding out hope that, this could have been promising, even though films of Lovecraft's work, in the past, had been disppointing, with low budgets and little if any real connection to the orignal plot of the book, it was said to have been based on. Still, the drama and concept creation devised in this poster by WKDart, does give us all, the opportunity to dream on and think . . .

YOU SEE A VERSION of this behind the scenes photograph very often around the net, but here is a slightly different shot of Peter and Vincent Price during the making of MADHOUSE, being interviewed for BBC programme Film 73 . .

NOT INCLUDING the silk around Peter's neck, can you spot the subtle difference in Peter's appearance, to how he looks in the film? Come tell us at the FACEBOOK PCASUK FAN PAGE!

HAPPY BIRTHDAY YOUNG VICTOR : MELVYN HAYES

JOIN US IN WISHING MELVYN HAYES a VERY Happy Birthday today. Melvyn was born today January 11th 1935, and since 1950 when he was "disappearing twice daily for £4 per week" performing the indian rope trick in Maskelyne's Mysteries at the Comedy Theatre in London! A very long and accomplished career on stage, tv and the big screen. Melvyn is quite an institution in the UK, having appeared in many TV dramas, soaps and comedy shows, the most successful probably being 'It Aint Half Hot Mum' in the 1970's. The show is now banished to 'Room 101' at the BBC, being considered like many shows from that era, quite UN-PC... you decide?

MELVYN WORKED WITH Peter Cushing as the young Baron Frankenstein in Cushing's first film for Hammer, 'The Curse of Frankenstein' (1957) he appeared as Daft Jamie in the brilliant 'Flesh and the Fiends' (1960) and with Cushing in 'Violent Playground' (1958) His last appearance with Peter was in the doomed 'A Touch of the Sun' in 1979 with Oliver Reed..see our PCAS YOUTUBE CHANNEL. A versatile actor, who stays young at 83, who will no doubt be having a real knees up and party as we wish him, Many Happy Returns Today 😉 Happy Birthday Melvyn and many more to come 🙂

ABOVE: IN CASE YOU MISSED IT. HERE'S MELVYN SHARING A GREAT ANECDOTE ABOUT MEETING HIS FELLOW CAST MEMBER, CHRISTOPHER LEE. . .

WAXWORKS DR DEATH DOCUMENTARY AND DEATH BY WEDDING CAKE!

#HORRIBLEDEATHWEDNESDAYS: Philip Grayson (Peter Cushing) meeting his end at the hands of the Waxworks Proprietor (Wolfe Morris) ..... This is a wonderful example of Peter's talent of expressing terror . . .

PART THREE OF OUR The AMICUS FILMS of PETER CUSHING features, WAXWORKS Peter Cushing's story in THE HOUSED THAT DRIPPED BLOOD, with GALLERY RIGHT HERE!

FUN FACT: Wolfe Morris co-starred with Peter Cushing in an Hammer film years earlier do you know the TITLE of that film and the NAME OF THE ROLE part Wolfe Morris played?
ANSWER LATER

#HORRIBLEDEATHWEDNESDAY! From the moment DR DEATH's face appears, between those elevator doors...you just know, this ain't going to end well.... A nice touch though! I just love how in Amicus films, MADHOUSE, the good doctor pops up anywhere and everywhere... just like, here! When the film does reveal just WHO is behind that mask, it makes Dr DEATH's actions, all the more interesting, I thought. Mind you, I might be on my own here...but I NEVER guessed who was behind that mask, until the reveal....

..
ABOVE: PETER CUSHING and VINCENT PRICE in AMICUS FILMS 'MADHOUSE' is covered in detail in Donald Fearney's 'THE AMICUS VAULT OF HORRORS' documentary PART FOUR, which you'll find above! ALL FOUR other PARTS CAN BE FOUND at our PCAS YOUTUBE CHANNEL HERE!

#HORRORIBLEDEATHWEDNESDAY!  Death By Wedding Cake, must be one of the oddest of demises in the Amicus films canon. Well, I know it was the knife, and the strange hex that was placed on Ian Bannen's lying Christopher Lowe in this weird little tale 'An Act of Kindness' in 'From Beyond the Grave' (1974).

A FILM THAT is certainly in the top three of many a Cushing Fan's listings. This death seems all the more sad, when you consider that all Lowe wanted was reputation, respect and a loving wife. Poor guy must have blinkers on, the day Donald and his 'mad as a tea pot' daughter, stepped into his life...Cake, anyone?

MORE. MUCH MORE On Peter Cushing and 'FROM BEYOND THE GRAVE' in PART FOUR of 'The AMICUS FILMS of PETER CUSHING'HERE!

#THROWBACKTHURSDAY! DONALD PLEASENCE REMEMBERED PLUS NEWS ON BRIDE OF FRANKENSTEIN AND

REMEMBERING: Actor Donald Pleasence who was born today in 1919... Pleasence appeared alongside Peter Cushing in a surprising amount of titles. From the quite early on brilliant BBC production of '1984' to the not so brilliant 'The Devil's Men', 'Flesh and the Fiends', 'Trial By Combat' and 'From Beyond The Grave' In a very lengthy career, with many highlights, Pleasence was always entertaining, especially with nervous, evil obsessive characters. Pleasence is probably best known for his role of Dr. Sam Loomis in the 'Halloween' films...a role interestingly enough that Peter Cushing was originally approached to play...

Whether Cushing had any real interest in play Sam  Loomis or
or not, it still would have made . . . a very nice blu ray cover!

Pleasence as the 'not as weird as he first seems' Jim Underwood
in Amicus films 'FROM BEYOND THE GRAVE (1974)

As Valentine De'ath, in 'THE UNCANNY' (1977)

Dr.Sam Loomis, 'Halloween 4'

As  Dr. Jack Seward, in the 1979 production of 'Dracula'

The President in 'Escape from New York' (1981)

#THROWBACKTHURSDAY!: NEWS! It looks like Universal's 'reboot-rebrand-remake' of the classic Monsters series, has no sooner started, first with a nose dive response to the recent #TomCriuse, #THEMUMMY release... than things stall with the studios planned #TheBrideofFrankenstein remake....Production was set to start this February in London, but the studio and director Bill Condon have paused plans to ensure the script is in tip-top condition. Condon has been working on the script with David Koepp, and while the screenplay is in good shape, sources say both men want more time to rework it to better reflect their vision....a wise move I'd say.

Our chap, only made one brush with the concept of creating 'A Woman' in Hammer's own Frankenstein franchise #Frankenstein Created Woman in 1967. It turned out quite well, granted fans were a little disappointed there was no 'monster' as such, rather the attractive #SusanDenberg, going on a psycho killing spree instead. It did good box office in a time when scriptwriters and studios weren't so fixated on 'super-heroes' and 'making-everything-thing-look-the-same-as-the-last-box-office-SF-blizt'..... yeah. A films with a story and real characters, would be a nice change . .. what do you think???
