THE STORY OF THE CUSHING NOTES AND BUREAU

#‎cushingcollectable‬ : WEDNESDAY: You may remember these posts from two Wednesday's ago? And after posting them, I promised to share the story of how I came to own those handwritten autobiography notes of Peter Cushing's...Well....the top post is Peter Cushing's Bureau, purchased just a few years ago. I was lucky to purchase it from a lady, who lived a short distance from Peter Cushing's home at Sea View in Whitstable.

HER HUSBAND HAD BEEN a great fan of Peter's work and he purchased the bureau at the Cushing Collection Auction in Canterbury after Peter Cushing died. Sadly, he too passed a year or so before I purchased the bureau, and his wife was slowly down scaling down her home and relocating.

WHEN THE TIME CAME to go along to her home to collect the bureau, it was quite an emotional parting for her, it was her husband's pride and joy. But when she found out 'where' the bureau's new home was going to be and about PCAS, she was over-joyed! During our meeting at her home, we had some tea and cake and chatted, and found out geographically, we had much in common too!

AFTER AN HOUR OR SO, the time came to carry the bureau out and carefully pack it up for it's journey to my home. I thanked her and told her how extremely pleased I was to be it's new owner, that it would be very well looked after and also pressed into use too!

IT WAS AT THIS POINT, she asked ' Oh, would you also like to take away these too?' She held out a plastic slip folder. Through the ageing and yellowing plastic, I could see inside, a wad of paper, and on the one corner, held by two large paper clips I could just make out lines of handwriting, in blue fountain pen ink! At the same time, I immediately recognised that distinctive style.. it was Peter Cushing's handwriting.

WHILE CAREFULLY SLIDING the paper out from the folder, I looked at her..she was smiling! I said, 'It's Peter's handwriting!!' She beamed back at me, 'Yes!', she said, she was as excited as I was! 'My husband said it was, but I have no idea what it all means. Is it an unfinished letter, he seems to be writing...is it his story and are all those titles his films too?' I barely heard what she had said, I was quickly scanning the pages. It was pretty obvious, these were notes about the contents of Peter's autobiography, in his own hand. 'It's Peter's notes.!', I said 'It's his autobiography. How wonderful! They are very rare indeed, you must be sure to take great care of them.' I said, 'Oh no..' she smiled, 'I want YOU to have them!'

QUICKLY, I DID THE SUMS in my head of their value and blurted, ' Well, that's extremely kind of you, but, I could not buy these today, I have...' but before I could finish, she laughed saying, 'Oh nooo. I WANT you to HAVE them. They should be with you!' I started to explain their value, a nice little break away with the proceeds maybe? But, she wouldn't listen, 'No. I am quite happy with the sale of the bureau...'

IT WAS THEN SHE said something that made my jaw drop so hard, the bump of it hitting the hall carpet could probably be heard down at Sea View.... ' My husband, didn't pay for them anyway..' I was puzzled, 'So, how did you come by them?' I asked. 'Oh, they were just inside THE BUREAU......!' 'What?' I said. 'They were in the pull down desk, in that folder!' she explained.

I THEN REMEMEBERED what many collectors had told me about the Canterbury auction. There had been so many lots, Peter had so much packed into his home and studio, when it came to dividing things into lots, often someone winning a bid on a book that belonged to Peter, got home and opened it to find an autographed note paper inside. People who purchase items of his clothing found scarves, silk handkerchiefs, cuff-links and pens tucked into them! It was something special, some extra item, however small, a thank you for your purchase..as there was mountains of items to sell. The bureau had been in the auction catalogue, as one of the very few pieces of Peter Cushing's furniture for sale... an expensive antique and a good price was expected, and archived!

AND SO, that is the astonishing story, of how I came by those notes...and the generosity of two women, the lovely lady who owned the bureau and Peter's long time friend, Joyce Brougton, who put the lots together for that auction! Bless you, ladies!

I DON'T CARE IF HE'S GOD!! HAPPY BIRTHDAY PETER CUSHING : ANOTHER LAST MEETING CLIP

OUR SECOND RARE clip today from 'THE LAST MEETING' raw footage of Peter Cushing and Christopher Lee meeting for the last time in 1994. Here, Christopher Lee shares the story of how he and Peter were doing the rounds of interviews and promotion for Dracula in 1958 in New York, and the larger than life radio presenter 'Long John' Nebel, giving Hammer films Chairman, James Carreras a piece of advice! Christopher Lee obviously again enjoys making Peter laugh. Just watching them both, so candid and relaxed, Peter obviously loves Lee's stories. It so good to see them both enjoying each others company, for one last time....

This is one of EIGHT clips, in an archive to which we are currently adding new clips. You can find all eight here in our Facebook video library or at our Youtube Channel. ENJOY!

RUNNING TO MAKE A DIFFERENCE : ANTHONY MARDON RAN THE LONDON MARATHON TODAY

This morning in the UK the 2016 London Marathon took place...and our guy, ANTHONY MARDON, as promised ran the 26.2 miles through London...dressed as Princess Leia from Star Wars, carrying a light sabre! Anthony was taking part and raising funds for the Pilgrim's Hospice, where Peter Cushing was cared for in his last days. Anthony's outstanding effort was also supported by very generous donations from friends and followers of the PCAS website and facebook page...and for you, he has the following message...

"Loved running the London marathon today. Not sure I'd choose to run in fancy dress again but I took my time and enjoyed the crowds and sites whilst waving my lightsaber around! A huge thank you to everyone who has helped me raise over £500 (so far) for the Pilgrims Hospice. I hope Peter Cushing would be pleased with that!" On behalf of us all, thank you for taking part today and a very well done!"

LONDON MARATHON RUNNER ANTHONY MARDON RUNS FOR PILGRIMS HOSPICE

I get lots of requests to help charities and good causes, and I try to help in anyway I can. But, a recent email from our new Friend and Follower, ANTHONY MARDON was one request I thought we could really get behind and with your assistance, help to make a difference.

I 'll let Anthony explain :

" I grew up watching Universal and Hammer double bills. I remember coming down stairs on a Sunday morning praying I'd set the video recorder timer correctly. That developed into a love of all things, SciFi, Fantasy and Horror. The older I got, the more I could indulge in my horror hobby, meeting greats such as Argento, Carpenter and Fulci, as well as favourites Peter Cushing and  Christopher Lee. I wish I had been able to meet Vincent Price. Peter Cushing and Star Wars is still a passion of mine.

I started running in 2011 because I had to. My wife and I were watching Run Fatboy Run  after dinner one Sunday with  a bottle of wine and a laptop. Keeley suggested I, like Simon Pegg's character, enter the London Marathon We were both carrying a few extra pounds! In January 2011 the NSPCC told me I had a place for April! Aggggh! I blame the wine!

I have run about 18 marathons now all over England and in Paris, Edinburgh and Berlin. I am running Valencia in November. I have run a few Ultra Marathons and my wife and I, have both qualified for the OCR (Obstacle Course Racing) UK Championship Finals last November.

Having qualified for the London Marathon this year with a 'good for age' place (meaning I don't need the ballot or a charity place), I have decided to raise funds for charity with a Peter Cushing connection. I will take part in fancy dress  and take time to enjoy running around London. This will be my third time, usually I am so focused on running, I don't get the opportunity to take in the atmosphere and crowds. I have got the go ahead to try breaking the 'fastest male marathon runner dressed as a film character' world record from Guinness but as it stands at 2hrs 42secs, 25 mins faster than my personal best, so I don't think I need bother!

The Pilgrims Hospice in Canterbury is where Peter Cushing spent his last few days, under the care of a Dr. Ribchester I believe. Great name for a doctor. It's a facility that provides excellent palliative care. There were reports a year or so ago about the possibility of it having to close. Having raised funds for large charities before, I want to do all I can for this fantastic and much needed facility.

So combining my love of running, Star Wars and Peter Cushing, I will be running the London Marathon 2016 on April 25th dressed in Princess Leia's gold bikini, carrying a lightsaber and raising money for a worthy cause.

If anyone can SUPPORT ME TO HELP OTHERS, if you can spare as little as a POUND, I would be extremely grateful and really appreciate it. ALL THOSE POUNDS COUNT and TRULY make a difference! Many thanks to Marcus at the Peter Cushing Appreciation Society  for helping with this. Many Thanks, Anthony "

NEWS UPDATE: CUSHING'S COAT BRINGS IN THE MONEY FOR HOSPICE CHARITY

You may remember back last month how we reported on the story of Peter Cushing's coat being auctioned on ebay for a charity close to his heart, The Pilgrim's Hospice in Canterbury, Kent. Well, the good news is, after a battle of bids, the Burberry coat owned and worn by Peter (see pic) brought a thumping £690.00! That's 1026.13 US Dollars....! There was also a cardigan that also belonged to Peter Cushing that was for auction too..and finally went for around £250.00. All this is great news for the Pilgrim's Hospice, who do such sterling work for individuals and families throughout Kent. I think Peter would have been amazed by this. So, congratulations to the winning bidder and THANK YOU ..a big thank you, to Bernard Broughton too, who donated the coat and cardigan, and very quietly helps the Hospice with various items for auction. Thank YOU Bernard!

A VERY MERRY CHRISTMAS to all our friends and followers of this website and our Peter Cushing Appreciation Society Facebook Fan Page!

NEWS: STAR WARS TOYS AND TARKINS SLIPPERS: MAY THE TOYS BE WITH YOU EXHIBITION

NEWS: PETER CUSHING 'TARKIN SLIPPERS' AND STAR WAR TOYS: MAY THE TOYS BE WITH YOU!

A collection of Star Wars memorabilia and toys has gone on show at a museum in Kent. The exhibition, called 'May The Toys Be With You', opened earlier at The Beaney art museum and library, in Canterbury. It is the first time the toys and posters, owned by collector Matt Fox, has been put on public display. It has been timed to coincide with the release of the new Star Wars film, Episode VII - The Force Awakens.

Back when Star Wars began in 1977 no one could have predicted that the merchandising of Star Wars would actually earn more than the film itself. The toys of Star Wars took the world by storm and became the must have playthings for an entire generation. From 1977 - 1985 an estimated 300 million action figures were sold, allowing children to re-enact the adventures of Luke Skywalker, Princess Leia and Han Solo.

May The Toys Be With You is both a celebration of the now highly collectable vintage toy line and also of the iconic design work and art of the Star Wars movies. From X-Wing Fighters to lightsabers, these fantastical designs have fired our imaginations and stamped their place on our cultural landscape.

As well as the exhibition, there are also associated activities taking place at the exhibition will be at The Beaney until 6th March 2016.

PETER CUSHINGS WHITSTABLE AN ILLUSTRATED GUIDE AND YOUR TRIP PICS

Summer is upon us again and every year at this time, we get a flurry of enquiries from friends and followers at our facebook page wanting to make plans to visit Peter Cushing's beautiful home town of Whitstable in Kent. When is the best time to visit, how do we find the places within the town that have Peter Cushing connections, where is the Tudor Tea Rooms, Cushing's View...many questions and request if possible for a map or pics to help navigate the day.

So this year we are prepared. Jamie Somerville partner admin to our facebook account and this website, put together a pretty comprehensive map and guide to Cushing's Whitstable and how to find it last year. The  version of the guide above has been updated PLUS we have added a gallery of  YOUR photographs that you have very kindly shared with us over the past two years. Many of the pics below have come from a very recent trip to the town by Karen Bond and Marc Hartley. They wrote us just this week to tell us all about the terrific day they had and very generously shared a whole album of photographs from their day. So our thanks to them.

If you are planning a trip to Whitstable this year, PLEASE feel free to send us your pics. We would love to add them to this feature, so the gallery grows, we get to meet you and hopefully it will encourage even more people to visit what is such a very special place.
