CONE OF SILENCE : PCASUK FACEBOOK WATCH PARTY NOW LIVE!

PCASUK #WATCHPARTY! FOR A BUDGET of just £139,360 about £3,400.00 today, Aubrey Baring Productions got a LOT of film for their money, plus a very good cast! 'Cone of Silence' aka 'Trouble In The Sky', currently LIVE at the FACEBOOK PCASUK FAN PAGE as our latest 'Watch-Party' post,  is a 1960 British drama film that was directed by Charles Frend and starred Michael Craig, Peter Cushing, George Sanders, and Bernard Lee. Quite a big step away from what had occupied Cushing for the past four years at Hammer films, the role of Captain Clive Judd, gives us a view of his range we had not see for sometime. The story centres around an investigation into a series of crashes involving the fictional 'Atlas Aviation Phoenix' jetliner

SHOT AT SHEPPERTON STUDIOS, budget constraints led to the production using some miniatures to depict airfields and aircraft, although principal photography took place at Filton Airport in North Bristol, UK with the cooperation of the Bristol Siddeley Engines Ltd. 'Cone of Silence' is loosely based on 1952 plane crash in Rome and subsequent investigations into the structural integrity of the de Havilland Comet airliner. . and how even the highest skilled of people can sometimes get it all very wrong! Still awaiting a blu ray release, this is a film that would look quite special in monochrome. . . as would many of Cushing's black and white feature films from this period... and why the recent Indicator blu ray release of 'Time Without Pity' looks so impressive! 😀 - Marcus

TALKING TARKIN : WHEN FAN ASKS MARK HAMILL THE BURNING QUESTION!

WHEN A FAN RECENTLY asked Mark Hamill on Twitter which actor from Star Wars he wished Luke could've shared a scene with if there was a chance, Hamill posted a touching reply. Not only did Hamill start with the late and great Peter Cushing, who played Grand Moff Tarkin, but he said basically everyone else from the films, calling out the sequel trilogy actors in particular. In a funny way it's a quintessential Luke Skywalker response 😊

#TOOCOOLTUESDAY: THE MODEL PERFECTIONIST : NO SMALL TIME HOBBY

#TOOCOOLTUESDAY! I have made this #BANNER using a series of promotional photographs that were commissioned by the #HAMMERFILMS  press office, during the publicity campaign of their fourth #FRANKENSTEIN film with Cushing, 'Frankenstein Created Woman' with Susan Denberg. It's true, while the good Baron was very great at making 'Monsters', Cushing was quite an accomplished and expert model maker.

EVERYTHING FROM his model soldiers, used in his #WARGAME past-time, model aircraft, ships, boats, houses and theater's . . . particularly theaters. After Cushing's death all of his model work, was auctioned to help pay his DEATH TAX bill..a REAL horror story... of the eight or nine that still existed, displayed and fully functional in the attic studio workshop at his Whitstable home, some are now in the 'eat you heart out collectors' MEGA COLLECTION, of huge Cushing fan and director, Guillermo del Toro Gómez. Each of the theaters, consisted of a proscenium arch, scenery, tabs, curtains, actors, props and a fully operational lighting system, complete with lightning board.

I HAVE LABELLED  the photographs, with close up images, so you can see the amazing eye for detail and authenticity that Cushing really had. Take a look at the handmade GOBO light, with different colored gels and working selection motor. The lighting positioned at the rear of the set in photograph C, a shows that colored lighting gel, was positioned over the lamps, so that the light source on the model stage, depicted daylight! I have no idea just how much the theaters sold for, but from his telephone bidding on the day, it's known their was huge interest in the theaters, and the 'lolly' that went under the hammer, was big bucks.

INVALID CAST : VINTAGE CORRESPONDENCE: KEEN GUSTAV AND DUBIOUS PRACTICES

#THROWBACKTHURSDAY: 'There is more evil around us here than I have ever encountered before. . ' Certainly a line of dialogue to get the pulse racing. This image is taken from the BBC television series 'Sherlock Holmes' which starred Peter Cushing as Sherlock, the episode is 'The Hound of the Baskervilles' which was broadcast in two parts . . Gary Raymond picture here,  stars as Sir Henry Baskerville.

#THROWBACKTHURSDAY! THE WONDERFUL thing about researching and documenting Peter's life and work is, being such a prolific letter writer and note maker, he has left a paper trail, and every now and then, something interesting bobs to the surface!. Here are two  good examples. These are genuine letters of correspondence between members of the public who have written to Peter, wishing him well and requesting an autograph or photo. Cushing was very good at sending replies, and 9 out of ten times, also including an autograph on a photograph, even if it wasn't requested.

#THROWBACKTHURSDAY: I THINK if Gustav Weil from Hammer films 'Twins of Evil' was around today, he would certainly be a regular monthly winner of the 'EMPLOYEE OF THE MONTH'. He certainly stuck to his job description, and wasn't happy until he and his band of the 'brotherhood' met their monthly quarter!

#THROWBACKTHURSDAY: THE PROGRAMME cast page from the 1951 production of THE GAY INVALID, lots of names that were soon to be house-hold names in the UK, along with Peter Cushing... there are also other performers names who have 'fantasy genre' connections on the big screen too. Can you spot them??

HOUSEKEEPING: If you are wondering were our Competitions have gone...worry not! I have an excellent COMPETITION for you THIS WEEKEND ! Also, for those of you who have spotted a fair ol scattering or typos, errors and mistakes in my jottings over the past three months, my apologies. I haven't lost my marbles, I am taking some elephant strength painkillers, following a wobble in health last year. I do try and check everything I write, but often it's difficult when the words and page are doing a tango and double vision at times, makes it a tricky exercise. I am ok, but please bare with me, normal service will continue very soon!

#HAPPYFATHERSDAY: FATHERS PASSED BUT NOT FORGOTTEN!

#HAPPYFATHERSDAY! It's the day for Dad's whoever you are, wherever you are all over the world. Father's here, Father's passed. Father's who can celebrate with their children today, and Father's, for whatever reason can not. My Dad is 4,000 miles away today, but only seconds away when I picked up that phone. He is, all I could ever ask for in a Father and friend . . .hey and without him, I never would have seen Dr Who and the Daleks in the cinema way back then!

Christina Lee with Father Christopher and Mother, Birgit.

Victoria with Father Vincent and pet Pug, Puffle!
CUSHING'S FATHER George, was a rock. Though he was closer to his Mother, Nellie, his Dad was always there for him, when he needed him. Cushing joked that his Father paid for his air ticker to the USA back in 1939, but he bought a ONE WAY ticket!!! Victoria Price has shared her memories of her Dad Vincent in an amazing book. And today she still travels the world, sharing stories and celebrating her father. Christina Lee I am sure, is still really missing her Father, Christopher. You only have to see the pics of her and her Dad to know, they were very close. With both Christina and Victoria, you can see many mannerisms that hint at their Dad's.... Happy Father's Day!

The Cushing Family: Peter at the top, his Father George, Mother Nellie and his Brother, David.
